For title sponsor Audi, Melges Europe and the International Class, the
2008 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series was a great success. Seventeen
teams participated in the five-part regatta series and it all began in
beautiful Malcesine, then traveled onward to Cagliari, Cala de Medici
and Santa Margherita Ligure. The grand finale took place in Lerici in
early October where Claudio Recchi aboard Lorenzo Santini’s Uka
Uka Racing was crowned champion. His tactician Gabriele Benussi and
crew Andrea Felci, Federico Michetti, Vittorio Rochelli, Luca Favarelli,
Carlo Zermini and Giovanni Puntello celebrated the victory too. Recchi
participated in every Audi Melges 32 series event and won an
impressive three out of five - Cagliari, Santa Margherita and Lerici. It
was this performance that delivered him the well deserved overall title.
“All these guys are fantastic to sail with and they are the real reason
we have been successful. The Melges 32 is a truly great class, superbly
well organized, with marvelous competitors and races at some great
venues. I think, 2009 will be even better, with more boats and a World
Championship in Porto Cervo,” said Recchi.
