Mike Martoccia is now coordinating our events and activities.
marketing, he’s also had extensive experience in event marketing.
basis, but can be reached anytime.
Mike is very eager to start serving Baxter in his newest endeavor, is
looking forward to building on the current activities in the year ahead.
The 2012 pool season is almost here and the gates will open beginning in May to welcome each of you out to
enjoy all we have to offer at both the Community Center Pool and the Village Hall Pool. You will find an entire
section online regarding pool rules, dates of operation, hours of operation and swim team meet dates.
Please reference the Frequently Asked Questions below for additional details!
Baxter’s Many Amenities
For so many families our amenities and activities are the core of what life in Baxter means to them. Please remember that
the prompt payment of your dues, whether at the end of the year or at the time of the biannual installments, is crucial to
maintaining the health of our community, amenities and activities. On a similar note, any residents that are delinquent
with payment of Association fees are kindly reminded that you will be suspended from amenity use and Community
Events requiring an RSVP. If you have any questions please contact the Baxter Community Association office.
Pool Parties & Gathering of Groups
As a general rule the pool is limited to resident families and up to 5 of their guests. Please remember that you are required
to call the Association office for a pool party even if all invitees are residents because Pool Parties must be requested
and approved by Association Management to assure safety rules are understood and for planning purposes. Additional
lifeguard fees may apply. Please direct all communication regarding Pool Party Requests to kharter@comporium.net and
include your date request, your name, phone and address with your email!
Pool & Tennis Court Guest Passes
As the summer season hits, we welcome so many out of town guests, both family and friends. If you are unable to escort
your guests to the Pool or Tennis Courts during their stay, please remember that you must secure a Guest Pass for them
prior to the day of their anticipated arrival. Given the demand and residency verification that is required, Guest Passes are
not available for pick up from the Baxter Community Association office without a prior email request. Requests must be
made via email to kharter@comporium.net. Passes for the weekend should be requested no later than Tuesday the week of
when the passes will be used. Please understand that these guidelines have been developed to help everyone secure their
passes before they are in need of them as the Association office does not maintain regular weekend hours.
What is a Guest Pass and When is it needed?
1) Allows Non-Residents to Access the Pools or Tennis Courts as a Guest of the Resident
One great thing about living in Baxter Village is that we are so close
to lots of fun things to do and places to visit. Earlier this year I
had taken a few trips over to Morrow Mountain State Park with
some biking buddies to get in some mountain training rides. Riding
through the park and witnessing the beauty in the landscape and
surrounding area, I decided to take the family over for a camping
weekend.
Morrow Mountain State Park, the third oldest state park in North
Carolina, is located about 45 minutes east of Charlotte, in Stanly
County. Nestled in the Uwharrie Mountains, one of the oldest
mountain ranges in the eastern United States, the park is bordered
on the east by Lake Tillery and the PeeDee River. The parks namesake,
Morrow Mountain, is made up of rhyolite rock, which Native
Americans found ideal for making tools 12,000 years ago. Established
in 1939 and covering over 4,700 acres, Morrow Mountain
State Park offers a variety activities.
The camping area is very nice, and one of the more specious campgrounds
I have ever seen in a state park. Each site has plenty of
room to spread out and is big enough for two large tents, or a
camper and one tent, with room left over. Only 22 of the 106 sites,
all located in loop C, have full electric and water at the sites, while
the rest are primitive but do have restrooms and showers with hot
water. The one downside to the campground, at least in loop C,
is that there is very little vegetation. So, while you are spread out
from other campers, there is little underbrush to dampen noises
and provide privacy. Plus, each loop only has one bathroom facility,
so if you are camping at the far end of a loop, you may have a bit if
a walk to get there. That being said, if you want the park experience
but don’t want to camp, the park has six fully-equipped twobedroom
cabins that sleep six people each.
The park has 10 hiking trails ranging in length from a half mile to
four miles. You can easily combine a number of these trails for a
full afternoon on hiking through the rugged woodlands or along the
river. If you are camping, I would highly recommend taking the Morrow
Mountain Trail for a very rewarding five mile round trip hike
to the top of Morrow Mountain. For the most part this is an easy,
rolling hike, but it does get a bit steep near the mountain top. Pack
a picnic lunch and enjoy the wonderful views while relaxing at the
top before beginning your trek back down the mountain. For horse
lovers, there are also 16 miles of equestrian trails that wander along
Mountain Creek and the base of Morrow Mountain.
In addition to camping and hiking, Morrow Mountain State Park also
offers boating access to the PeeDee River and Lake Tillery. There
are rowboats and canoes available for rent on weekends during the
summer. Fishing is available from an accessible fishing pier or anywhere
along the banks of the river and lake. And for a break from
the heat, the park has a swimming pool, complete with bathhouse,
near the campground.
For those that appreciate the history of an area, the park has an
exhibit hall with exhibits about local Indians, plants and rocks, and
early explorers. You can also visit the homestead of Dr. Frances
Kron, the first physician in the area. The homestead includes a
reconstruction of his house, office, and greenhouse, and appears as
they did in 1790. While you can wander the grounds any time, the
house is only open on Sunday afternoons.
Morrow Mountain State Park is a gem of a park within an easy one
hour drive from Baxter. Whether you head over for a day trip or
will stay for the weekend, you’ll sure to appreciate what the park
has to offer.
Trails Tales from the
Baxter Trail Club
As summer draws to a close, the Trail Club is gearing up for some exciting
events; from trail work days to hiking and running events and even a
few fund raisers… And while these outdoor events are going on there
is plenty to do indoors as we get our charter, finances and insurance
coverage in place. There is a lot of opportunity to get involved in the
coming months.
First and foremost, yes, we know this isn’t really exciting
or an event but there is a section of the trail that is
currently closed due to development activity. The area
is off of New Grey Rock Road and connects the trail
along the road to the area where the storm water pond
is located. Clear Springs Development has indicated
that the trail should be able to be re-opened sometime
later this fall. Be on the lookout for updates on the
Club’s FaceBook group as well as by blast email from
Our first monthly meeting of the
season will be held on September
10th at 7:00 PM in Village Hall.
We are planning on discussing:
The next steps to formalizing
the Club. This includes updates
on governance & finance documents,
dues and other fund raising efforts, as
well as trail work day structure and event mobilization efforts!
September trail work day planning: The September
work day will be held the weekend of the 15th. Work days have historically
been on Saturday mornings from 7:00-12:00 or later depending on
the task(s) we are taking on. We have done some on Sundays too but,
Saturdays seem to work best overall for these
events. We will work to finalize the location
and scope of the work day at the meeting and
discuss potential future efforts.
Trail mapping and marking: We
have an update on the mapping efforts and are
looking for volunteers to help with these efforts.
Help is needed with designing, sourcing and building of markers.
Planning for future outings such as Hikes, Family Mt. Biking, Full Moon
Bon Fires, New Years Day Runs and potential educational and recreational
type opportunities. We are always open to
new ideas so please come out to share yours, especially
if you want to take an active leadership role in
planning it with us.
We are also planning on having a booth at the Fall
Festival to help let people know we are here and
what we are about. We also hope to use this as a
fundraiser and we will need volunteers to help get
us ready and to inform people of what we are about.
To get a deeper understanding of these efforts and
how you can help out, please plan to join us as our
September meeting. Please RSVP on our FaceBook
group event and/or email us!
Helping Hands
17
“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates
profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” Lao Tzu
For my family, the end of summer means lots
of pool time, firefly hunting, ice cream cones
and last minute excursions to our favorite
local places. It is not until the beginning of
August that we generally start to buckle down
and get focused on school. My kids love their
trips to Target, checking off their lists to make
sure that they have everything they need and stuffing their backpacks
full of supplies.
One thing that is generally not on my
mind in July is school supplies - for
my children or others. The School
Supply Drive to benefit the Fort Mill
Care Center kicks off in early July
and is over by August 1 - typically
when people first start thinking about
supplies! The Fort Mill Care Center
helps hundreds of needy families in
our community and begins distributing backpacks and supplies by
August 1. It is a challenging timeframe for many of us. Helping Hands
was asked by the Care Center to provide 50 backpacks for needy high
schoolers. This is a group that is typically underserved in terms of
school supplies but is often the neediest demographic.
We kicked off our School Supply Drive on July 15th and
planned our Backpack Stuffing Day for July 28th. We
decorated and put out our bins. We stuffed flyers into
mailboxes. We tweeted and facebooked. We sent out
emails with shameless pleas for supplies. We received
a very generous donation of backpacks from The Palm
Gifts and from a local Baxter resident, enough to meet
our goal. All we needed were supplies. Three days
before our event most of us had only cobwebs in our
bins instead of paper and pens.
But then, in true Baxter fashion, the supplies came
flooding in! It was truly an amazing success. Volunteers showed up for
our Backpack Stuffing Day. We were able to stuff 82 backpacks along
with an additional 16 bags of school supplies ready for backpacks.
This is almost double what we provided last year! Additionally we
provide 3 huge boxes of extra supplies to the Fort Mill Care Center.
Thank you to everyone who donated, assembled and collected
supplies. It was a great success and those backpacks are a blessing
to so many young people in our community.
S omething Explorations by
Gail K. Warner
toDeclare
Upon landing in San Jose, California we were
greeted by the sun and warm spring temperatures.
We headed straight out to the middle
of nowhere, otherwise known as Fort Hunter
Liggett, now home of William Randolph
(W.R.) Hearst’s former hunting lodge, “The
Hacienda.” It’s nothing short of surreal. We
entered the vast expanse of the base through
a guarded checkpoint and then wound our
way past the PX, a bowling alley, theatre,
fire station and then The Hacienda came into
view. It’s a gorgeous, Julia Morgan Spanish
colonial design complete with an arcaded first
story and a tower – which served as our home away from home. On our first night the
Army band and chorus were out back practicing. Of course we had to wander over and
check it out. It was fun to hang on the fringes and take it all in.
We made our first trek off the base by taking what appeared to be no more than a glorified
bike path that twisted up and around, and eventually over the mountain to reveal the
ocean. It was truly jaw-droopingly, stunningly, beautiful once we got over the holy MOLEY
moment of no guardrails and zero visibility around every hairpin turn. It took us three hours
to travel all of around 120 miles. But, without question, it was worth every white-knuckle
minute. We only encountered two cars the whole journey over the mountain, and oddly
they were both headed in the opposite direction. The scenery we enjoyed on our way to
US1 was the perfect primer for what the Hearst Castle’s “Enchanted Hill” had in store for
us. We toured the gardens, portions of the 60,000-square-foot “casa grande” and one of
the guesthouses (it has 18 rooms). The great room in casa grande is 2,500 square feet!
When W.R. was 10 his mother whisked him off to Europe for the Hearst family version of
the grand tour. It lasted nearly two years. Apparently when your father is the 10th richest
man in the world that’s not a big deal – especially when you’re the sole heir. The castle’s
architectural influences, artwork, and gardens clearly became an amalgam of all the images
gathered from W.R’s travels over the years.
A tsunami slammed into Japan while we were in California and the remnants lapped at
our shores as we headed out once again on US1 en route to W.R’s place. We chose the
more direct route this a.m. However, we did stop at a funky compound complete with resident
goats enjoying breathtaking views of the ocean from their idyllic little paddock. After
getting a snack and entertaining the goats we headed back out. We wandered our way
around two little towns that were both the very definition of charming.
We started in the heart of wine country – Paso Robles. “Paso” is all about its vineyards
and tasting rooms. However, we really enjoyed the main square. It’s straight out of the
1950s. A Carnegie Library takes pride of placement in the center of the square and is
bordered by funky shops, cafes, galleries – tasting rooms, of course – and restaurants. It
was great to see such a thriving arts district. The sidewalks, parks and architecture made
it a perfect place to stroll.
We left Paso Robles bound for the next storybook town on our list – Cambira. Just like
Paso Robles, Cambria is wonderfully pedestrian-friendly and bursting with tempting shops,
galleries and great architecture. Each storefront greets visitors with a welcoming Dutch
door. It was a gloriously sunny day so the top half of all the doors were swung open allowing
breezes, visitors and dogs to waft in and out.
We headed back to W.R.’s place to experience the castle by light of the moon… Spectacular
by sunlight, the castle is pure magic when basked in moonlight. It’s hard to imagine
living in such opulence on a daily basis. The indoor pool, when illuminated by alabastertopped
fixtures, transforms at night into a dream-like setting. It was all shadow and light,
and nooks and crannies, with hints of gold glinting everywhere. During evening tours there
are people dressed in period clothing wandering the grounds doing things W.R.’s guests
would have done – mainly eating, drinking, gambling and then attending the mandatory
viewing of the movie in the theatre – usually a film starring his girlfriend, actress and
dancer, Marion Davies. W.R. allowed his female
guests to gamble and shoot pool right alongside
their male counterparts, quite progressive for that
era. I found it amusing that the incredibly remote
site had electricity and a private airstrip from day
one – not to mention phone service.
We ended our last day of the trip back in San Jose
with a repeat to a “Diners, Drive Ins & Dives” find –
Falafel Drive In -- which was all of three miles from
our charming Victorian B&B.
Biggest surprise of the trip – the unimaginably
vast, open expanses of wine country. From San Jose to Paso Robles there is just nothing
but vegetable farms giving way to vineyards for miles and miles. I had no idea there was
so much open land (let alone scenic rolling foothills) in the great state of California. The trip
has changed our perception of the state entirely – which is exactly why we travel.
Next month I’ll share our musings from Prague. 21

Where does the time go? Summer is gone and we are back
to school already. I hope you enjoyed some fun times and
made a summer scrapbook of your memories. I use a site
called Shutterfly to make mine. I am not computer savvy
and this site is easy to navigate. Sign up and take advantage
of the discounts they offer. You can make gifts such as
calendars, mugs, t-shirts and more. Great ideas for holiday
gift giving. I like to make a photo book of our vacations.
We joined the YAHA group for a trip to Columbia. You must
take a ride and spend the day there. It’s only a little more
than an hour away . The Columbia Museum of Art, The Ed
Venture Childrens Museum, and the South Carolina State
Museum are just some of the places to visit. We went to
see the Titanic Artifact Exhibition. The state museum is the
only museum in the southeast to host this exhibit. The museum
itself is an old mill. There are many other things to
see there. The one I was most interested in was the Civil
War. This exhibit will be done in phases over a four year period
and is very impressive. If you have a student studying
the Civil War this is a must see. Columbia is a great family
outing. Besides the museums there is the State House and
the Zoo. There is no shortage of places to eat. This time
we lunched at Motor Supply Company. This restaurant has
won many awards and was top notch. If you are planning
lunch get there early or for dinner I would recommend a
reservation. Speaking of award winning restaurants, one
of my faves right here in Fort Mill just was awarded Four
Diamonds by AAA - Passion 8 Bistro. It looks a little iffy
from the outside and a bit eclectic inside BUT the food is
what you go for. The menu changes seasonally so you are
never bored. They feature an upscale menu and use many
local ingredients in their dishes.
By the time you read this the hoopla from all the political
conventions will be over and you can start planning some
uptown events. The symphony, opera and the Blumenthal
theater all have their fall programs listed. Don’t forget to
check out the local colleges for theater and musical events
including CPCC and Winthrop University.
The fall brings a slew of fairs and festivals. Greenville, SC.
has their annual food fest called Euphoria September 20-
23 and the South Carolina State Fair is October 10 -21.
The Yiasou Greek Festival takes place in Charlotte September
13-16. This is their 35th year. With the crowds I saw
last year they must be doing something right. Go early because
it gets pretty crowded. Check your Sunday paper for
other events. With Halloween right around the corner there
are hayrides, corn mazes and of course the scare fest at
Carowinds. A fun night uptown is the Haunted History Tour.
Charlotte has some pretty dark tales.
The fall is also a great time to sign up and take some
classes. Johnson and Wales has some unique culinary
experiences on Saturday mornings. CPCC has a variety
of classes to choose from. Improve your golf game , learn
how to bake artisan breads and even strengthen your core
muscles with a Belly Dance class. There are so many opportunities
to learn something new. And don’t forget the library.
There are always events going on there for all ages.
By now you know I am always looking for new places to
dine. A cute place in Pineville is Two On Earth Bakery &
Cafe. A cute little place for lunch that features freshly made
salads, panini, quiches and baked goods. They open at
7am and serve breakfast. Their baked goods vary from day
to day and offer both sweet and savory scones. Yum! After
you fill your tummy walk around Main Street and browse
the antique shops. A shop right next door is Z Furnishings.
They offer many locally made items and it’s a fun place
to poke around. The owner is an upbeat guy who enjoys
showing you around the shop. This place has some unique
accessories to boot and some items can be custom made.
Well I hope you have some new ideas to try.
Until next month
Green
As a child, my birthday celebrations were typically small, primarily
family, gatherings. My mom would bake and decorate a cake; there
were a few balloons, and several humble gifts. Though I am not one to
complain about any size event in which I am the focus, I often secretly
wished for an extravagant revelry celebrating my fabulous existence!
Because I desired a lavish birthday party growing up, I now feel the
need to host them for my children! (Totally for them, not me, of course!)
This month my oldest son will be three and his first two bashes were
magnificent, pricey, imaginative, and completely environmentally
irresponsible! This year I am throwing my inhabitot’s first green
birthday party and I am determined to make it even more
ingenious than his previous two!
Obviously, a cyber invitation is best, but it just doesn’t feel right if I
can’t put it in a scrapbook! Because Tytus’ party is a jungle/zoo theme,
how better to announce it than on requests printed on elephant
poo paper! www.poopoopaper.com It saves trees and uses a
sustainable material that has few uses.
As a mother, I do not want the focus of my child’s celebration to be on
his gifts. Instead of presents, this year we are asking that attendants
bring a contribution for Tytus’ charity jar. After his party, Ty’s offerings will
enable him to become an “endangered species carousel sponsor”
at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC. He will be able to visit the
zoo all year, ride the endangered species merry-go-round, and see his
name on a plaque above his circling animal! My hope is that he will
feel proud to have helped, and possibly saved, an endangered species
because of his third-year life celebration!
I shutter to think about the masses of wasteful and harmful decorations
I have purchased in the past, just to toss after a few hours of use! This
year, live plants will fill the house to give it a “jungle” feel. I ordered
several paper panda shaped balloons from www.amazon.com and a
Nature Sounds Meditation CD will play in the background.
Ideally, everyday dishes would be used and washed afterwards. My
column is called Queen of Green, not The Greenest Queen! Gatherings
are already so much work, why add dish washing to the chore list!
However, I did purchase sustainable bamboo plates and utensils that
can be pitched after one use. They are sturdy, organic, biodegradable…
and jungle chic! You can find them at most Earth Fare or World Market
stores. (No worries, cloth napkins will be used and presented as
animal origami on the table!)
I am making a vegan chocolate cake and will serve fun, healthy fruits
and veggies that resemble animals. If it looks fun, kids usually eat and
adore it! Play with Your Food by Joost Elffers offers phenomenal
menu ideas with easy directions!
What is a party without a favor? Typically these goodie bags are made
of paper and filled with unhealthy candy and cheap plastic toys that
are chucked before getting out of the (hybrid) car. So not green! Ty’s
guests will each take home a reusable tote adorned with their names.
During his gala, the kids will each create a sock monkey to drop in their
personalized sacks. Also, inside each individualized carrier will be a
wooden animal puzzle and a ticket to the Riverbanks Zoo so T’s guests
may visit and ride the carousel animal they helped Tytus to sponsor.
Parents will also be given one of the live, leafy party décor plants to take
home.
It may seem as though an eco party alternative may cost more “green,”
but it truly does not. The tricks are to not invite every Stephanie, Kevin
and their brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins; do not make so
much food that the leftovers will not fit in your fridge afterwards; and
be selective with your planning. (Spend more on what you feel is most
important, weather that be favors, decorations, or entertainment.)
Challenge yourself to keep your tot’s next hoorah simple, eco, and fun!
If successful, Karma and Mother Nature will surely RSVP!
Peace, and remember this September, Evites save trees!
