Treatment Applications
A world leader in water
Filtration of the world’s water:
we set the standards.
Earth isn’t called the Blue Planet for nothing. Over seven tenths of the
surface of our globe is comprised of oceans, seas, great and small lakes
and the networks of natural and man-made waterways and reservoirs
embroidering the landscape.
Taking care of our water and providing solutions in filtration and
treatment is the principal challenge facing Filtersafe®, one of the
world’s leading filtration specialists. Whether across industrial,
marine or resource drilling applications, our aim is to ensure
the world’s industries have ready access to the most advanced
filtration equipment available.
At the onset of each design application, Filtersafe’s primary objective
is to engineer and fabricate tailored and standard filter systems from a
range of highly sophisticated and proven materials, utilizing major R&D
initiatives to establish the most appropriate specification of materials
to ensure each finished product exceeds all mandated requirements.
At the very core of Filtersafe’s development philosophy, is a consistent
and dedicated focus on mechanical reliability and efficiency, too, all
combined with robust construction technologies. Simultaneously,
our emphasis commercially remains on the careful balancing of
environmental issues, alongside achieving consistent operational
economies for our customers.
Filtersafe® uses expertise developed over three decades in the design,
manufacture and application of high quality filtration solutions. It is
our often unique innovation that has helped the company contribute
enormously to the efficiency of world water management.
The company is uniquely positioned in the marketplace, and currently
services all major international markets from its Head Office and
manufacturing facility located in northern Israel.
Ballast Treatment: maintaining
the ecosystem of the oceans.
It may come as little surprise today, but over 80% of global trade volume
is still transported by ship. Whilst ballast water is used in all voyages, at
least half of each and every journey is undertaken with additional water
aboard to compensate for the absence of cargo. The movement and
sheer volume, therefore, of indigenous micro-organisms, sediment,
plant and animal life being drawn, shipped and discharged into alien
environments across the world within the ballast systems of these
vessels, is posing a major challenge to earth’s bionomics.
As a result, the International Maritime Organization has now introduced
the mandatory specification of automatic filters within ballast water
treatment systems on all new-build and retrofitted vessels.
the range.
Sintered Screen. Weave-Wire Technology.
By utilising unique and exclusive weave-wire sintered screen
technology, Filtersafe® obtains unparalleled Zooplankton removal
rates. Filtersafe’s fine screen is composed of four sintered, stainless
steel screen layers that create a strong, durable, reinforced filtering
element, which requires no support.
Two types of stainless steel are available:
• 316L, for standard applications.
• 904L Duplex SST, for high-corrosion resistance and prolonged filter
use.
Filtersafe’s superior Sintered Screen Weave-Wire technology gives
BSF-series filters a distinct advantage over the competition. Our
filtration performance is second-to-none and in terms removl of
organic matter and TSS.
For instance our 40 micron screen removes 98% of Zooplankton and
up to 50% of Phytoplankton from water intake. This performance
level is converted into exceptional sediment removal performance.
Close Proximity Suction Nozzles®.
Filtersafe® utilises its Proximity Nozzles® patented technology
to efficiently and effectively remove organic matter from the
filter screen without having to halt system operation.
This completely autonomous system uses calibrated
suction nozzles which cover less than 1% of the total screen
area to remove screened matter. This results in extremely
high suction forces that ensure complete cleanliness in
preparation for the next cycle and establishing it as up to
50% more effective than the traditional ‘candle’ system.
The Proximity Nozzles® enable a regulated and consistent
suction force to clean the screen. This resourceful hydraulic
system ensures maximum suction force for removing dirt from
the screen whilst minimizing residual water and pressure loss
from the cleaning process.
Consequently, compared to other technologies in the market,
Filtersafe® uses a significantly lower amount of ‘wasted water’
during the filtration’s flushing process.
Operating Pressures.
Due to the unique design of Sintered Screen and Proximity Nozzle®,
the Filtersafe® automatic filter is the only self-cleaning filter on the
market capable of sustained smooth operations as low as 1.6 Bar
(22psi) head pressure. Even at such extreme pressures, our Proximity
Nozzle® still allows 100% cleaning of the screen after each flush cycle,
ensuring continuous, uninterrupted filter operation without any risk of
‘blindness’.
Filtration Effectiveness.
Filtersafe® technology is designed to combat seawater’s marine bioinvasions,
Phyto- Zooplankton and general suspended solids. Filtersafe
BSF-series filters are offered down to 25 micron for BWT applications.
Component Durability.
Filtersafe® products have been engineered for performance and
longevity. Our automatic screen filters employ highly-durable, noncorrosive
components inside and out, to ensure robust, trouble-free
operation, requiring minimal maintenance. Filtersafe® also equips its
filters with minimal plastic materials, thereby abiding by ship-building
regulations regarding fire prevention.
Epoxy-phenol Coating.
Filtersafe® treats the body of its filtration systems with a complex
multi-staged curing process, which during development testing
logged over 2500 continous hours in a salt-cell study.
The process includes a zinc-phosphate treatment and an electrostatic,
oven-cured epoxy-phenol finish, which results in a durable protective
layer especially suited to the various rigours of marine applications
and adverse-saline-conditions. The process complies with numerous
international performance standards, including ASTMB-117.
Turbo TM Model.
All Filtersafe automatic screen filters can be equipped with our unique
Turbo TM technology. Designed to increase the filter’s capability to
operate in high dirt-load situations, this unique facility gives our
BSF-series filter a distinct market advantage in adverse, but equally
common, sediment-rich environments.
Conversely, our Turbo TM technology also allows us to equip our filters
with both nominal and absolute screens down to 25 micron for
increased removal rates.
BSF-Series installation an
Filtersafe® can offer more versatility in spatial arrangements, by
supplying units in both horizontal and vertical formats. This ‘modular’
system enables a vertical filter to operate in the exact same manner
as a horizontally positioned unit and to the same performance
standard, whilst substantially reducing its area footprint.
Moreover, the ‘in-out’ flange connection positions can be fitted in
four different directions to suit your space and piping arrangement:
0º, 90º, 180º and 270º.
The flexibility associated with this modular approach ensures an
optimized spatial configuration is obtainable in the installation of
each ballast water treatment system.
BSF unit
installed in a fully
operational system.
Filtersafe® offers supreme intallation solutions. For example in a
retrofit system on an existing vessel, where space is often restricted,
Filtersafe® facilitates quick, economical and efficient installation
solutions. Competitor filters are at a distinct disadvantage in
comparison.
the standard dry and weighing method in order to best simulate true
conditions in ballast water tanks.
Sediment Test Results
Results of this study parallel a series of tests performed at NIOZ and
Newcastle University (UK), concluding that Filtersafe® BSF-Series
filters are highly effective in removing Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
loads by up to 96% with our standard 40 μm filter.
This is an obvious benefit for ship owners with long periods
between ballast water tank cleaning and compliments the very high
performance of organic matter removal obtained by our BSF-series
filters.
Conclusion
Very high removal of TSS from ballast water
BSF-Series 40 µm screen proving 96% removal.
