The Sinai Reform Temple of Bay Shore celebrated Scout Shabbat on Feb. 5 in honor of Scout Month. This event was open to all Scouts. In attendance were Boy Scouts, Girl
Scouts and Brownies from our community, many of whom participated in the service. The Scout Shabbat was led by Rabbi Emily Losben-Ostrov and Bruce Streger, a representative
from the Suffolk County Jewish Committee on Scouting. All Scouts who were in uniform received a certificate and a commemorative patch for their participation and
afterwards enjoyed refreshments while they socialized.
Seatuck looks to open its headquarters to the public
By JEFFREY BESSEN
ISLIP — More than 40 years after an idea to establish an
“inviolate sanctuary” for birds and other wildlife took hold
the Seatuck Environmental Association is now ensconced
in the Scully Estate under the aegis of Suffolk County.
Seatuck initially celebrated an agreement between the
nonprofit organization and the county three years ago—
three years after Suffolk purchased the 69.5-acre estate
off of 550 Bayview Avenue—with a cocktail party at Capt.
Bill’s in Bay Shore.
In a little less swanky atmosphere (but no less interesting),
the now 21-year-old Seatuck opened its doors to the
media last Thursday and plans on opening the newly created
nature center with a ceremonial ribbon cutting on
April 22, and two days later to the general public.
“We are looking to do more public programs and build
a sense of community,” said Seatuck Executive Director
Enrico Nardone, who noted one of the bigger problems
his group has is that despite significant local publicity, a
majority of people do not know where they are located
since Seatuck did not have a permanent home.
Seatuck is now south down Bayview Avenue off of Main
Street, immediately in front of Islip Town Hall. Heading
south, one passes several blocks of residences before hitting
a more rural environment.
The Scully structure is a 1917-built French-style mansion
designed by well-known architect Grosvenor Atterbury
that boasts a fireplace and balcony in every room.
This property also features wildlife native to Long Island
and a place where people who are passionate and knowledgeable
about nature can share their zeal and information
with children and adults.
Seatuck is planning to conduct an assortment of programs
that, hopefully, will engage families. Nardone termed
Seatuck’s three-pronged mission as: citizen science, where
everybody can participate in data collection; policy work,
ensuring that nature is protected through laws and education
that broadens the minds of participants; and exposing
children to the natural world.
The “Eco-Carnival,” planned for April 24, is an example of
that education and differs from other Earth Day events where
booths are set up to publicize organizations and issues. Nardone
said there would instead be educational activities and
entertaining family events to get “kids engaged in nature.”
ISLIP — With all the snow that has fallen this winter, the removal
of the snow and paying for it are major parts of the town’s
budgeting process. Though the town budgets by year and there
are no specific figures for this winter season, according to Commissioner
of the Department of Public Works Rich Baker, here
are some numbers.
In 2009, the town budgeted $2.325 million for snow removal
and $2.38 million was spent—going over budget by $55,000—
due to the December blizzard, Baker noted.
For this year, $2.325 million was again budgeted and currently
$1.2 million was spent leaving $1.125 million. “While we can’t
predict next October to December’s weather, we are not, at this
point, on pace to be over budget,” Baker said.
The town has been applying a brine mix since the second week
of January to melt the snow and ice, and that appears to be saving
time and money. “It is very hard to state how much money
we may have saved in this short time,” Baker said. “We can state
unequivocally that the roads in the town of Islip are much safer
and less slippery since we started using brine.”
BRIGHTWATERS — When Bay Shore High School junior
Connor Duddy wanted to raise money for the Wounded Warrior
Project (WWP); no one anticipated what the teenager had
in mind.
Duddy, who is enrolled in the high school’s International Baccalaureate
(IB), decided he’d ask a few close friends to camp
out with him overnight last weekend to raise funds for that good
cause. The project would be part of his CAS (Creativity, Action
and Service) requirement for all Baccalaureate students.
The IB program, which was instituted in Bay Shore High
School this year, has been gaining popularity in recent years.
The interdisciplinary curriculum, which is uniform around the
world, encourages global, intercultural understanding and respect
through education.
High School guidance counselor Viki Zimolka, who is the CAS
coordinator, said all of the current 28 IB students in the school
must eventually complete projects that meet all of the components
of CAS in order to receive the special IB diploma. “Since
he’s donating the money [raised] to WWP, it’s the perfect CAS
project,” she said.
When Duddy began thinking about the CAS project, his
thoughts turned to American soldiers fighting overseas. “I’d
heard about WWP doing things on Long Island and so I thought
doing this [project] would be more meaningful,” he said.
WWP is a not-for-profit organization that was started by several
individuals who were moved by the stories they had heard about
injured soldiers returning from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Their mission is to raise public awareness to the plight of
wounded veterans while raising the funds to support the services
and programs that will meet their needs.
“I’d heard that the average, nighttime winter temperature in Afghanistan
was 19 degrees,” Duddy said. “So I thought [camping
out at night] would be a way to show solidarity for our troops.”
First, with the help of his father, Kevin, Duddy was able to receive
permission to use Walker Park in Brightwaters as the site
for his overnight camp-out on the beach.
He then garnered the help of four good friends to do it with
him, two of who are also in the IB program. Finally, he asked
family, friends and neighbors to sponsor him with pledges. In the
end he was able to raise $2,300.
Around 9 p.m. Saturday, the five teenage boys arrived at the
beach to begin their adventure. A few things had to be taken care
of before pitching their tent, though. “We shoveled snow out of
the way,” Duddy said.
With the tent up and sleeping bags in place, they warmed themselves
around a campfire; wearing multiple layers of clothing
helped keep out the chilly 30-ish degree temperatures, too.
Well, almost. “The wind [off the water] wasn’t too bad,” said
camper William Jockers. Duddy concurred, adding, “I wouldn’t
want to do it every night, though.”
The kids chatted with friends who stopped by for a brief visit and
roasted marshmallows until they were ready to turn in. “It all went
nicely,” Duddy said regarding the otherwise uneventful night.
Jockers said waking up on the beach even in the winter has
many advantages. “Looking out at the bay in the morning was a
cool thing to do,” he noted.
The campsite was dismantled and cleared by 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Duddy said he was pleased with how the project turned out.
“I didn’t expect to raise as much money as I did. I’m really happy
I did that,” he said. ■
Town snow removal budgeting
Baker noted that for storms of two to three inches or less, applying
brine before the snowfall can largely eliminate the need
to plow at all, as the snow melts on contact with the roads.
Plowing is still necessary for larger storms, but by applying
the brine solution on the roads the snow comes up much easier,
usually leaving only asphalt. Prior practice required plowing followed
by salting and sanding to remove the layer of ice, which
then needed to be swept up after the storm to remove the sand.
“By using brine, we can lessen the usage of salt and almost eliminate
the need for sand,” Baker said. “For example, in the storm
that hit in early February, we brined over 800 miles of road.”
Islip has used as much as 8,000 tons of salt, but only 150
tons of this salt was used to make 150,000 gallons of brine.
The town is able to use less manpower to plow, salt and sand,
and clean up the sand, saving a significant amount of money
on salt purchased.
“The ultimate focus of our brine program, as with all of our
snow removal operations, is to ensure the safety of Islip residents
on the roads,” Baker said. “The pre-treatment of roads
with brine solution has and will continue to drastically reduce
the presence of ice on the roads during and after a storm.” ■

Not playing around with drinking games
New law seeks to ban sale to minors
By JEFFREY BESSEN
EAST ISLIP — In the wake of a constituent’s
complaint and efforts by County
Legislator Tom Cilmi (R-Bay Shore) to
have a couple of local retail stores relocate
or remove inappropriate merchandise,
the lawmaker has proposed a new
measure.
Cilmi’s resolution, which he laid on the
table of the legislature on Tuesday, calls
for banning the sale of drinking games to
minors.
The concept behind the planned legislation,
according to Cilmi, himself a businessman,
is not to make it more difficult
for retailers to generate revenue, but to do
it in such a way that games that promote
binge and possibly underage drinking are
not accessible to minors.
“My main thrust is to first of all to prevent
sale of these drinking games to minors, and
send a message to retailers that they are
engaged to sell products that aid in the degeneration
in children and [these children]
are dying as a result,” Cilmi said.
Based on information included in the
proposed bill, young people who begin
drinking in their early teenage years are
four times more likely to become alcohol
dependent compared to those who begin
drinking at the current legal age of 21.
And that is one of the reasons for the bill.
Since those under 21 cannot legally drink,
they should not be able to purchase games
that promote drinking.
However, this appears to fly in the face of
anecdotal evidence that Cilmi learned from
By EMILY PORTOGHESE
County Legislator Tom Cilmi (R-Bay Shore) introduced legislation to ban the sale of
drinking games to minors.
multiple sets of local high school students,
who estimated that 80 percent of their
peers drink.
The games targeted include video games
and board games that have become so
popular that there is even a “World Series
of Beer Pong.”
Kevin Mahoney, an attorney for New Jersey-based
Spencer’s Gifts, one of the stores
in the South Shore Mall targeted by Cilmi,
said, “I certainly agree with the sentiment
behind discouraging underage drinking
and binge drinking.”
However, Mahoney did note that the
games do not come with alcohol and thinks
that the propose measure is unnecessary
Heroin testing made easy
Applying home kits and peer pressure to a growing problem
as underage drinking is already addressed
by existing laws.
“Young people cannot access alcohol and
if they are, a crime is being committed,”
Mahoney said.
Though the Bay Shore Spencer’s did previously
move the drug related books that
Cilmi pointed out from the front of the
store to a less viewed area, the county legislature
took exception to Mahoney’s view.
“I would call his statement intellectually
dishonest and disingenuous. Kids can find
their own ways to drink and play games
and they always have. That doesn’t mean
we should glorify and support it and sell
games that are meant to facilitate binge
drinking by minors,” Cilmi said.
Eddie Davis, the owner of Hicksvillebased
Gadgets & Gizmos, seemed to be
more apologetic in his stance, noting that
he also is a father.
“We adhere to mall rules and they want
it to be family-friendly. We try to keep it
light,” said Davis, who added that they did
move the adult-themed games to a different
section of the store and removed the drug
paraphernalia from the Bay Shore store as
previously noted by Cilmi.
The first-year county legislator, also a father
of two, is very aware of how difficult it
is to navigate children through the maze of
dangers they face, but noted it is a responsibility
that must be undertaken.
“How many young people do we have to
find on the side of the road dead who overdosed
or drank themselves to death before
we actually do something?” asked Cilmi, alluding
to the current heroin epidemic. ■
HAUPPAUGE — Legislator Ricardo
Montano (D-Brentwood) joined efforts
with Moloney Funeral Homes and others to
offer free heroin testing kits for concerned
parents throughout Suffolk County.
Numerous school districts, elected officials
and parents have held and attended
forums on the topic in recent months, and
Montano is the most recent elected official
to address the issue
Also present at the event were Jeffrey
Frayler, president of the Suffolk County
Police Benevolent Association; Jeffrey
Reynolds, executive director, Long Island
Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence;
and Nick Nardoni, father of Michelle
Nardoni, who died of a heroin overdose on
May 31, 2008.
While people may be aware that heroin
is a highly addictive and dangerous illegal
substance, it should be noted that the
potency of the drug has increased from 15
to 20 percent pure in the 1960s and ’70s
to between 80 and 90 percent pure today,
making it easier to smoke, snort or inject
than ever before, Frayler noted.
In addition, heroin-related deaths in Suffolk
County now exceed deaths caused
by car accidents, and drug arrests have
also increased, Frayler noted. The PBA
president said, “Heroin is destroying our
greatest resource, our children.”
As owners of Moloney Funeral Homes,
the Moloney brothers see firsthand the
heartache families go through when losing
a loved one to drugs. Heroin test kits
are available at all six Moloney Funeral
Home locations throughout Suffolk, and
all a parent has to do to obtain one is
ask.
Several dozen have been delivered to
each of the six locations, and 50 percent
are already gone, Moloney noted. “We feel
County Legislator Ricardo Montano (D-Brentwood) held a press conference last week to announce free heroin testing kits for Long
Island adolescents. Kits are available at Moloney Funeral Homes and Montano’s office. Pictured are: Peter Moloney; Nick Nardoni;
Montano; Jeffrey Frayler, president of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association; and Jeffrey Reynolds, executive director, Long
Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
it’s our way of contributing,” Moloney said
about offering the kits, which include one
immediate test and an order form for a second
test. “We want to help the families,” he
said. Kits are also available at Montano’s
office located in the courthouse Corporate
Center at 320 Carleton Avenue, Suite 4300
in Central Islip.
Though drug tests do not negate the need
for parents to have a serious talk with
their children about drugs, it can make it
easier to broach the subject while possibly
deterring teenagers considering trying the
dangerous drug.
Reynolds emphasized talking to your
children about drugs is something parents
must do early on, and addiction is one of
the only diseases in which there is such a
strong sense of denial from all sides.
Drug testing not only allows the parents
to keep a closer eye on their children, but
it gives kids yet another reason to not try
heroin. “Kids are susceptible to peer pressure.
This (testing) gives them the perfect
out, they can say ‘my parents test me, I
can’t do it,’” Reynolds said.
Drug addiction is a difficult problem
for the abuser and their family to accept,
Montano noted, but programs are available,
and besides prevention, treatment is
the next step.
“As kids become more aware of the dangers
of drugs, they will realize their parents
are working for them, not against them,”
Montano said. The legislator also noted
the last person they want on the scene is a
police officer. “They (abusers) need to be
put in a program before they get arrested,”
he said.
County Executive Steve Levy recently
unveiled a heroin treatment initiative,
which includes a medication-assisted therapy
approach to be used at county health
centers, combining the prescription medication
Suboxone with outpatient counseling
and support.
If approved by the legislature’s Health
and Human Services Committee, this
$350,000 landmark initiative was eligible
for a vote before the full legislature on
Tuesday. ■

6 ISLIP BULLETIN - March 4, 2010
SENIOR LIVING 2010
What is Elder Law?
ANSWER: Elder law is a fairly new
and unknown area of the law. As baby
boomers and their parents age, they
are living longer and often living with
chronic medical conditions. The cost
of long-term care continues to spiral
out of control and families struggle
to meet the needs of their aging members.
Elder Law attorneys must be familiar
with multiple areas of the law—
contract law, estate planning, trusts
and estate administration, Medicare,
Medicaid, health care insurance regulations,
Public Health Law, Mental
Hygiene Law, the Internal Revenue
Code and state and local tax issues.
In most instances, the issues that we
deal with are fact sensitive and the
clients must be coaxed to give us the
information that we need to formulate
the elder law plan. Sometimes a client
will call the office and be shocked to
learn that we don’t give legal advice
over the phone. In fact, some callers
are surprised to learn that secretaries
and paralegals can’t answer their legal
questions.
The various disciplines that make
up the elder law practice are in a
constant state of flux. As a result,
it requires the elder law attorney to
spend a great deal of time reading
current journals and cases and taking
continuing legal education courses.
In addition, many elder law attorneys
meet in informal study groups to read,
understand and strategize.
As the facts change, there will likely
be different solutions for each client.
What works for one client may be
totally inappropriate for another. For
instance, in one day I see two different
clients. Both clients are 86 years old,
own their own homes and need longterm
care. Client A has a daughter,
age 55, and Client B has a niece, age
55. Client A, on the eve of going into a
nursing facility, is advised to transfer
her home to her caretaker daughter,
who lives with her and has lived with
her for more than 2 years. The transfer
does not make Client A ineligible for
Medicaid. Client B cannot follow the
same plan because her niece is not
her child. There are no exceptions for
transfers to caregiver nieces. However,
after discussing this matter with
Client B, I learn that the niece no longer
works but collects social security
disability. I advise Client B to transfer
the house to a supplemental needs
Caution is key for seniors
returning to exercise
trust for her disabled niece. The result
is the same, the house is protected
and both clients are eligible immediately
for Medicaid to pay for their
long-term care. On the other hand, the
solution is very different. Remember,
one size fits all is not the rule. Your
elder law plan is fact sensitive and
requires a careful review of the facts
and circumstances.
Since the recent change in the law,
the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005,
I’ve had more clients tell me that they
have been advised that you can no longer
transfer assets and the look-back
period is now 5 years, not 3.
Unfortunately, that advice was not
entirely accurate. There are still planning
strategies that can be implemented.
The change in law requires you to
consult with an experienced elder law
attorney, sooner rather than later, to
best develop a plan to help address
your family’s needs. Although you
may incur a consultation fee, it will be
money well spent as the knowledge
and expertise that an experienced
elder law attorney brings to the consultation
is invaluable. ■
Despite reports of a nationwide obesity
epidemic, much of the country has made
exercise an important part of their daily
routines. Though young people are aware
of the long-term benefits of exercise,
such as reducing the risk of heart disease,
seniors can benefit greatly from daily
exercise as well.
In fact, many illnesses commonly faced
by senior citizens can be combated
effectively, though not entirely, if daily
exercise is included. Exercise can help
reduce the negative side effects of
conditions such as osteoporosis, arthritis
and even depression, each of which can
appear as a person ages.
Unlike beginning an exercise regimen
when you’re young however, doing so as
a senior involves a little more restriction
and an honest appraisal of where you are
with respect to fitness. For seniors about
to start an exercise routine, a couple of
things must be considered to ensure your
success and safety.
• Be honest: Diving right back into a heavy
exercise routine is dangerous. Instead, be
honest with yourself at the start. If you
haven’t seen the inside of a gym in a long
while, take things slowly. Make your daily
routine short at first, for 10 to 15 minutes
per day, and take regular breaks.
• Be realistic: Choosing an exercise
regimen that you won’t enjoy is impractical.
While this is often something younger
people with specific goals in mind can
handle, seniors need to be realistic and
choose a routine they’ll enjoy. You’re
probably not entertaining the notion of
athletic glory like younger people, so
you’re far less likely to stick to a routine
that’s not enjoyable.
Once you’ve chosen your routine, there
are certain steps to take that can ensure
the routine won’t leave you licking your
wounds or aching all over.
• Stretch: Even professional athletes who
earn their livings being physically active
stretch on a daily basis. Stretching should
be done before and after each workout.
Low-intensity stretches that precede a
workout will ready your body for the more
strenuous work ahead and will also get
your blood flowing.
It’s important to stretch after you’ve
worked out as well. Most people end their
workouts with some cardiovascular work,
be it walking or running on the treadmill
or using the exercise bike. Once you’ve
finished the more strenuous portion of
your cardiovascular routine, cool down
with a 1- or 2-minute walk on the treadmill
or a couple of minutes of low-intensity
cycling on the exercise bike. This allows
your heart rate to return to normal.
• Stay hydrated: Even if your exercise
routine isn’t strenuous, and for many
seniors it’s not, that doesn’t mean you’re
not going to sweat. Replenish the fluids
your body is going to lose through exercise
by drinking water while you exercise.
Dehydration is not only bad for your body,
it’s also uncomfortable, often leading to
muscle tightness and possibly stomach
pains.
• Take it easy: Once back in the swing of
things, it’s still important for seniors to not
go too hard during their workouts. Feelings
of nausea, lightheadedness or dizziness
indicate you’re going too hard. Again,
seniors are at greater risk for injury and
ailments than their younger counterparts,
so exercise caution whenever exercising. ■

SENIOR LIVING
Advantages to 55+ living
Look around many of the suburban areas,
and you are likely to find age-restricted
communities catering to adults who have
hit the magical age of 55.
At this age, you may be thinking of
retirement or are ready to put in a few
more years on the job. What you may
be looking for is a home that is less
maintenance, affordable, meets your
needs (instead of the needs of kids
who have long left the nest) and offers
convenience items all in one package.
That is just what 55+ communities, also
known in some places as “active adult” or
“lifestyle communities,” offer.
Forget preconceived notions about
“senior living.” These are not nursing homes
or assisted living facilities. They are simply
subdevelopments that traditionally offer
affordably priced living and amenities to an
age-restricted group. Some communities
will even allow individuals ages 18 and
older to live in the homes, provided there
is at least one other individual in residence
who meets the age requirement.
55+ housing offers many advantages to
interested individuals:
• Cost factor: Many 55+ homes are
priced considerably lower than homes of
similar sizes that are not in age-restricted
communities. For individuals on a fixed
salary or preparing for retirement, this
feature alone can be a major advantage for
purchase.
• Proximity to friends and family: Active
adult homes are cropping up in suburban
areas all around the country. Their
popularity and availability has grown as
more baby boomers reach age 55. Because
of this, individuals can still live close to
friends and family—and continue all of their
social visits—but have the convenience of
adult living.
• Amazing amenities: Active adult
communities are more than just homes.
They typically are built on a sprawling
campus complete with clubhouse, pools,
exercise rooms and nature trails. Most
offer recreational activities such as craft
classes, movie trips, card games and much
more.
• Desireable home designs: New homes
are being built with open floor plans in a
variety of styles. Many feature single-level
living to eliminate the need for scaling
steps. Energy efficient materials and
many other features make these homes
desireable and attractive.
• Security and safety: Many communities
are gated with announced visitors and
have private security patrols. Some are
located in close proximity to hospitals and
other medical care in the event there is an
emergency.
• Social gatherings: It’s easy to meet
friends of similar ages and like-minded
interests in a 55+ development.
• Transportation convenience: If you
don’t like to drive, that’s taken care of in an
active adult community. Transportation to
stores, places of worship and even doctors’
appointments can be arranged, with costs
generally covered in monthly association
fees.
• Maintenance-free: For those who want
Who qualifies as a
‘Baby Boomer’?
The term “Baby Boomers” describes the generations of Americans born in the post-
World War II “baby boom.” While some historians believe that Baby Boomers were born
between 1946 and 1964, no consensus has ever been reached. In addition to the controversy
surrounding the years in which the baby boom began and ended, there is also disagreement
about whether those individuals born in the second half of the boom are actually members
of another generation, which has been called “Generation Jones.” Under this rubric, for
example, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush qualify as “Boomers,” while Barack Obama, born
in 1961, would be considered a “Joneser.” ■
My lower denture has never fit very well. I hate
having to continually use denture adhesive to
hold it in, but I can’t afford a full mouth of dental
implants. Is there another, less costly solution to my problem?
A.
Q.
In my thirty years of practice, I have seen very few denture
wearers whose lower jaw allowed a denture to fit as well as
an upper one does. Because there is no palate on the lower,
there is less area to gain suction. The typical lower denture is “successful”
if it doesn’t rise up on its own. It can always be dislodged
easily by the tongue or cheeks. These muscles must be trained by
the wearer of a lower denture to keep the denture in place while
chewing and speaking.
The simplest and least costly way to secure a lower denture is
to place as few as two implants in the lower jaw. Attachments can
then be placed in the denture that allow it to snap firmly in place. In
some cases, your existing lower denture can be used to fit these attachments.
The result is a secure feeling that you wouldn’t believe.
Not only will this implant-attached denture fit well but food is much
less likely to get trapped below this denture because of its secure
fit. If you would like to see a demonstration of how strong this fit
can be, call our office for a consultation.
8 ISLIP BULLETIN - March 4, 2010
EDITORIAL
Seatuck
settles in
At a time when families are feeling
the pinch of the pocketbook due to the
economy, the county has given residents
a gift in the form of the Seatuck
Environmental Association that seeks
to be so much more than just an organization.
Now ensconced on the 69.5-acre Scully
Estate at 550 Bayview Avenue in Islip
hamlet, this 21-year-old group is looking
to open up nature to adults and children,
while focusing on a three-pronged
mission.
That mission includes citizen science,
where everyone can get involved
in helping to collect data for a specific
project. It also includes policy work to
help ensure that nature and natural habitats
can be protected.
The third prong is education. And not
only for adults who can be citizen scientists
or who can advocate for or oppose
legislation through the ballot box, but
for the next generation of children.
Programs and lectures are expected to
be geared toward getting children outdoors
and that is good from three perspectives:
the children learn about the
natural world; are active; and then become
better learners, according to the
experts.
This is what we need. Modern technology’s
computers and video games are
great, but there is nothing better than
getting out into the natural world and,
depending on one’s age, making a mud
pie, looking underneath rocks for bugs,
touching tree sap and handling frogs
and snakes.
An appreciation of nature is needed if
future generations are going to preserve
what open space the previous generation
leaves them. If they do not appreciate
the good that comes from having
open space, then open space will disappear.
In addition, there is a tremendous
amount of history rattling around the
French-style mansion, from understanding
the historic architecture to knowing
who designed the 1917 structure.
This is an all around great place for
schools to visit and enhance the education
we want our children to be getting.
Seatuck has finally found a home and
they want a lot of visitors. ■
Movie Review with Susan Sessa
Loving a few movies about love
By SUSAN SESSA
Valentine’s Day
Once upon a time, I really believed Prince
Charming would come to carry me off on
his white steed and we would live happily
ever after. Unfortunately, after a couple of
heartbreaks and a handful of disappointments,
I realized love wasn’t written in the
stars for me.
I related most to Jessica Biel’s character
in Valentine’s Day, who was cynical
about the whole “love” word. Not to sound
completely negative though, I personally am witnessing my
parent’s celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary this
year, my newlywed co-worker constantly tells me how she
can’t wait to go home to her husband, and I’ve been seeing
the smile on my oldest daughter’s face, being in love for the
first time.
But Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) seems so commercial to me.
It is a happy time for card companies, florists and candy
stores perhaps, but just not for me.
This movie overflows with actors as director Garry Marshall
has concocted a star-studded stew. It simmers mostly
around a few main characters. Ashton Kutcher (I’ve loved
him ever since That 70’s Show) owns a florist shop in Los Angeles
and, as a hopeless romantic, he is every girl’s dream.
He proposes to Jessica Alba, but she is more involved with
her career. Then there is cutie pie Jennifer Garner, Kutcher’s
best friend. I remember Oprah once saying that best friends
make the best lovers.
Bradley Cooper befriends service woman Julia Roberts on
a plane as she is making the long 14-hour trip home to see
her special someone. Shirley MacLaine and Hector Elizondo,
two real acting pros, do share a sweet old love story.
Eric Dane (McSteamy from Grey’s Anatomy) portrays a
football player with an interesting story. The list of actors
goes on and on (Taylor Lautner, George Lopez,
Taylor Swift).
Then there were the actors who, to me,
were just wasted. Kathy Bates, Patrick
Dempsey, Topher Grace, Queen Latifah and
Anne Hathaway are all great but with very
so-so stories in this film.
It’s a cute movie but never comes to a tasty
boil. If you want to see a delicious movie,
rent the classic, Love Actually. It has onefourth
the actors of Valentine’s Day and
serves up 10 times the entertainment.
I give it 2 1/2 heart-shaped Raisinets and
advise you to wait for the DVD. I believe if you love someone—your
partner, your soul mate, your piece to your puzzle—you
should show them you love them every day, not
just on Feb. 14.
Bella (DVD)
I’ve said before that some of the best movies are total surprises.
The movie you never heard of but for some strange
reason you pull it off the shelf. Maybe it’s the cover as was
the case with this charming little film I came across recently
called Bella.
This was one of the most unique and endearing movies I
have seen in a long time; completely captivating me and capturing
my heart and spirit. Eduardo Verástegui’s (he’s very
handsome) character is on his way to sign a multimilliondollar
contract to become an international soccer player.
All of a sudden, events change and he becomes head chef
at his brother’s restaurant and befriends a waitress played
by Tammy Blanchard. She finds out something for which
she is totally unprepared. Suddenly their lives become entwined
and something very sweet and simple changes both
their lives forever.
Put this on your “To See” list! This 2007 movie won the
People’s Choice award at the Toronto Film Festival and won
4 1/2 beautiful and touching Raisinets with me! ■
ZAGAT…“Every Town Should Have A Restaurant Like This”

Seeking to engage
everyone in nature
SEATUCK from page 1
as an undergrad at Cornell that had him
studying sturgeon in the Hudson River Valley.
He earned a master’s degree from the
SUNY College of Environmental Science
and Forestry in Syracuse.
Currently, Kelder is overseeing a citizen
science project that seeks to count (approximately)
the amount of alewife fish (a
species of herring) in the area.
The alewife, a small fish about 12 inches
long, is a forage or feeder fish for larger
species, so the larger the alewife population
is, the healthier the populations of bigger
fish are.
This counting, Kelder said, can be done in
April and May, when the alewife swims to
spawn, and can be done from overpasses
and other easy access points to the waterways.
Volunteers can be trained and then
sent out to conduct the data collection.
“It is a good opportunity to learn about
this fish and go outside and help the
cause,” said Kelder, who also serves as the
mansion’s caretaker.
For education director Peter Walsh, the
programs are all about getting outside and
allowing people, especially children, to get
involved in nature. Walsh’s lectures, which
got underway last Thursday, are slated to
be part of a year-long series that engages
families, as well as an adult-only one that
he termed “more intense.”
For children, the concept is to get them
outdoors to experience nature in the manner
of what is called “free-range play” to
not only learn which bugs are under what
rocks, but also to make mud pies.
“It is a hot topic, why it is so important to
put kids outside,” said Walsh, who formerly
ran the Western Suffolk BOCES Learning
Laboratory located at Sunken Meadow
State Park.
The group has scheduled volunteer cleanups
on four consecutive Saturdays, March
20 and 27, and April 3 and 10 from noon to
4 p.m. to help prepare for the grand opening.
18 ISLIP BULLETIN - March 4, 2010

IB
March
By JEFFREY BESSEN
FARMINGDALE — The
explosions began early and
often, but unfortunately, it
was not the team that Bay
Shore fans wanted to see
have the offensive surges.
Spearheaded by Tennesseebound
senior Tobias Harris,
the top-seeded Half Hollow
Hills West Colts made up for
a loss to the Marauders during
the past football season
as they bounded their way
to a 96-48 victory in a Class
AA semifinal at Farmingdale
State College last Sunday.
Hills West (21-0) is slated to
face No. 2 Longwood (19-2)
who overpowered No. 3 Lindenhurst
79-62 in the Class
AA championship game on
Wednesday, March 3 also at
Farmingdale at 7:30 p.m.
“They came out there and
played exactly like they
were supposed to play and
we did not,” said Bay Shore
head coach Gary Williams.
“We were very timid and
very lackadaisical, and good
teams bury teams that do
that. That’s a very good team.
They did everything they
were supposed to do today.”
Harris (21 points) and his
mates leaped out to a 14-8
lead with 4:25 remaining in
the first quarter and despite
not scoring for nearly three
minutes and allowing No. 13
Bay Shore to scramble within
one at 14-13 with 2:07 left
in the period, an Emile Blackman rebound turned into a
Harris basket, then a Tavon Sledge (23 points) dunk made
it 18-14 with 1:14 to go. Tyler Harris had 23 points.
Then the Colts really took off as Sledge’s spinning move
made it 25-15, 1:44 into the second quarter. Despite Bay
Shore’s best efforts, the deficit ballooned to 40-26 off a Harris
trey with 2:08 before halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half as Hills West
led by 70-30 with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter. Williams
replaced a few players in the second half, but it was
not due to the large deficit.
“If you are not going to give us effort on both ends
of the courts, can’t play you, can’t play you. It’s not the
type of basketball that we play. That’s not how we got to
SPORTS
where we are. We play on both ends of the
courts. Everybody dictates their own playing time,” said
Williams, adding, “It’s all heart.”
Bay Shore (11-9) did demonstrate heart following a 5-1
start that went awry to a 2-4 fall, then rebounded with late
season wins, including two in the playoffs, knocking off
No. 4 East Islip and No. 5 Brentwood before banging into
Hills West.
Despite the behavioral issues during the season and this
game’s benchings, Williams saved most of his venom for
the traveling AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) that the majority
of youthful basketball players participate in, which appears
to forego learning playing the game well for winning
and notching big statistics.
“So, when they come to their high school teams we’re
stuck with players that don’t know how to line up and
“We don’t have the time to really teach this stuff,” he added.
“That’s why I took this job. That’s why I did this. To try
turn that stuff around and it’s not an overnight thing.”
But Williams noted before the game that “these are the
building blocks” and he plans to help his team improve
from each game and into the next season. “I picked it up
in the middle of the summer last year. I didn’t really have
all of my players, but now all it is is a learning process,”
Williams said. “We really don’t have a lot of kids who understand
the fundamentals and that is what we are going to
on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21.
Two local athletes from West Islip, siblings Aidan and Olivia
