Introduction
live local plant local
How are the products sustainable?
A combined assessment of the embodied energy, resource
consumption, recycled or recyclable content, biodiversity
impacts, and sustainable timber selection was undertaken
on each product.
Embodied energy – the amount of
energy used in the raw material extraction,
production and associated transport
of products and materials have been
assessed.
Resource consumption – an assessment
of the responsible use of natural
resources from material production,
through to its end use. Using salvaged
and recycled materials, and considering
the environmental, social and economic
aspects of a resource are favoured.
Recycled products – ideally the product
should be post-consumer recycled –
material recovered from households,
commercial or industrial premises.
Pre-consumer recycled products – material
diverted from the waste stream during
manufacturing have also been listed.
Biodiversity impacts – ensure no
detrimental environmental or socio-cultural
impacts on an ecosystem or community
living within or relying on an ecosystem
i.e. harvesting rainforest timber from
Southeast Asia.
Timber selection – timbers have been
recommended that are certified through
the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)*
or salvaged and/or recycled timbers.
*The FSC is an international, independent,
not-for-profit, organisation that promotes
environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial
and economically viable management of the
world’s forests.
uPVC frames
uPVC saves 100 per
cent of the trees used to
make timber windows.
Manufacturing uPVC
uses two-thirds less
energy than metal framed
windows. They are 100
per cent recyclable, and
factory scrap goes back
into other uPVC products.
No painting is required.
Low-e glass
Reflective glazing
Low-e glass (low emissive) has a metallic or oxide coating
which reduces transfer of heat or cold through the glass while
still allowing light through. Mostly used in double or triple
glazed units.
Reflective glazing maximises light transmission while
reflecting solar radiation and is often used to reduce heat gain
especially on western elevations.
Double glazing
Triple glazing
Double glazing consists of two panes of glass with sealed
spaces of ideally 12 to 16mm in between. This space is filled
with air or an inert gas (like argon).
Triple glazing has three panes of glass (any glass
combination can be used) with sealed spaces of ideally
12mm in between. Some triple glazed windows can have
a u-value as low as 0.9.
FSC certification
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international,
independent, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation.
The FSC was founded in 1993 in response to the Rio Earth
Summit to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial
and economically viable management of the world’s forests.
It provides:
• standards for responsible forest
management through 10 Principles
of Responsible Forest Management
• annual auditing by accredited
certification bodies to ensure
compliance with these standards
• brand credibility through a ‘chain of
custody’ system that tracks timber
from the forest to the end consumer
• a distinctive trademark for buyers
of forest products
• a governance structure that ensures
the organisation is independent
of any one interest group.
• an ethical certification system for
in excess of 84 million hectares
of forest worldwide with more than
5,400 participating companies.
See the FSC website for a list of species that are currently certified – www.fsc.org .
Environmentally Certified Landscape Industry
Professionals (ECLIPs)
Sustainable Gardening Australia (SGA) runs an environmental
certification program for garden centres and landscape
professionals that includes an external audit process.
SGA worked closely with the Landscape Industries Association
of Victoria (LIAV) and other industry professionals to develop the
certification process. This industry sector includes landscape
architects and designers, contractors, parks and gardens staff
and garden maintenance operators.
Certification ensures landscape
professionals design gardens that:
• minimise water use
• minimise chemical use
• enhance biodiversity
• complement natural systems
• minimise invasive plants.
Garden centres:
• minimise water use
• minimise chemical use
• don’t sell invasive plants
• are up to date with the latest
sustainable gardening practices
• provide advice on creating
a sustainable garden.
See the website for a complete list of certified garden centres and landscape
professionals – www.sgaonline.org.au .
