Where it lives: Beneath the soil’s surface.
What it eats: Brachymyrmex snack on
underground bugs like root aphids and
sometimes scavenge for sweet treats above
ground.
NYC notes: This lovely little ant has been
found in the grassy, open habitats of three of
the 14 parks sampled in Manhattan and in five
of 13 forests. It isn’t so choosy, though it has
not yet been spotted in medians or out on the
hot cement.
