to "Professor ll Danny Coston
Since joining the Academy faculty in 1967.
Danny Coston has won the confidence of students
is always willing to offer his time and assistance.
"Professor Maynard," as he is often called, won
the respect of each student thr011gh his easy·going
manner. One student commented, " I never dreaded
going to art class, in fact I looked forward to it,
because I knew that I would be taught something
useful in an interesting way."
We, the senior class of 1970, gladly dedicate our
portion of the 1970 Petit Jean to you, Coach Danny
Coston for helping us to appreciate all things.
fields of adventure were explored by science classes.
Under the direction of Randall Brannon, students
studied the properties of chemistry, utilizing new
labs in the college science building.
A new lounge area, made available with the art
department evacuation, afforded added eagerness
for snack break, a time for students to escape from
studies and problems to enjoy milk and candy.
Musical talent and dedication
contribute to successful tours
Membership in the A Cappella chorus again
exceeded fifty with participation divided among
sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Under the direction of Ray Wright, the traveling
chorus, a selected group of about forty members,
took a four day fall trip to Texas, Louisiana, and
Arkansas. The chorus sang in three churches and
one school giving inspirational programs to the
large audiences. A longer trip in the spring took
the chorus to Oklahoma and northern Texas.
Other activities of the group included participation
in a district festival at Little Rock, a state
festival at Hot Springs and performances for
civic groups in Searcy and the surrounding area.
With the addition of Randall Brannon to the
membership. During the year many field trips
were made to local and area places of interest such
as Bluff Hole and W yldewood. M ost of the memo
This was another busy year for members of the
Key Club whose first fund-raising project was
selling home fire extinguishers. The club treasury
gained funds from money collected through dirty
lockers and lost book fines.
The Junior Civitans provided a badly needed
service this year by raising money to paint the
new snack room. The girls also saved the school
extra expense by performing the job themselves.
KAT
Record membership in KAT's
provides for a successful year
The old members of Kappa Alpha Theta commenced
their yearly activities with the acceptance
of ten new pledges. The informal initiation rite was
a humiliating experience for the girls who were
required, among other things, to recite nursery
rhymes at the steps of the Administration Building
and chant the club song in the depths of the lily
pond. Formal initiation was held at the home of
Georgia Merritt. Admittance of these new members
increased club enrollment to twenty.
Under the guidance of their sponsor, Mrs. Elsie
Lynn, the KAT's once again undertook the project
of providing clothes and gifts for a child at the
Conway Children's Colony. Many of the gifts were
given by teachers and students of the Academy.
The drawing of peanut pals began an eventful
year for the Sub-Debs. Keeping a tradition started
three years ago, the mem bers drew names for their
secret pal at the formal initiation of new members.
The identity of peanut pals was not revealed until
the end of the year.
Trying to be serious at all times, pledgemasters
put pledges through their duties of solidifying and
burying smiles. Activities were ' climaxed by the
informal initiation at Rosemary Baggett's home.
Keeping 'with the time, the Sub-Debs celebrated
the "Fads of the Sixties." Through old records and
pictures the Sub-Debs and their dates relived the
past ten years. Helping them celebrate were senior
beau, Johnny Baines and junior beau, Steph~n
Tucker. As their special guests Mr. and Mrs. Wilt
Martin attended the banquet. Coach Marti n was
chosen by the Sub-Debs as their teacher of the year.
to have as their attendant Rachel Formby. Rosemary
Tremendous desire for victory
wins District 2- B for Wildcats
Bill Barden, ill his first year as head coach ,
guided the 1969 WiLdcats to the 2-13 district championship.
From a di smal start to a blazing finish
was the story of the Cats this year. The Wildcats
b egan the year by losing one g ame, winning one.
and los in g another. The team then put it all together
and won the next five stra ight. including
everyone of their district foes. The vVildca ts's only
defea ts came by the hands of class A schools, al
though all played were larger than Harding.
The offensive and defensive lines were coached
by Wilt Martin, and four of the seven all-district
playerlt were linem en. Coach Ba rden and Martin
installed a new diversified offense this year, and
the monster defense yielded points grudgingly.
Senior leadership played a big part in the Cats
winning season . Alec Petway gained over 1,100
yards and four seniors made the all-district team.
All-district selections were made by the coach es
from the 2-B schools. Seven Academ y students
made the district team: they were Alec Petway,
Larry Davis, Johnny Ba ines, T on y Duran. Tim
Ram sey, David Ca mpbell, Stephen Tucker .
JUNIOR FOOTBALL
Junior Wildcats use size and
ability to roll over opponents
The Junior Wildcats used their size and their
ability to throw the important pass in rolling over
four of their five opponents.
Under the able leadership of the new Junior
High Coach, David Elliott, the Junior Cats scored
impressive wins over Morris and Cotton Plant,
and Beedeville was beaten twice. A close loss to
Heber Springs marred a perfect season.
Eleven ninth-graders played in their last Junior
High football game. They were Robert Baggett,
David Tucker, Kenny Harris, M ike Kiihnl, David
Morris, Steve vVilliams, Ronnie Moore, Jonathan
Bales, Mark Bixler, Bob McArthur, Ralph
vVilliams, and David Farrar.
BASKETBALL
Hustle is the key as Wildcats
end up with a record of 21 ~3
In his second year as head coach, Wilt Martin
used his famous full-court press and fast break
basketball to produce a 21-3 record. The Wildcats
were taller than many of the opponents they faced
and used this to the best possible advantage. Outside
shooting was a factor in the 1970 Cats' offensive
threat, accounting for nearly half of the total
points. Sticky defense held opponents to a 51-point
average as the W ildcats averaged 64 points.
In the County Invitational tournament the Wildcats
placed second after defeating Rosebud and
Pangburn. At the Christian High School tournament
in Searcy this year the vVildcats walked away
with first place after defeating a tough Dallas team
in the finals. John Vines and Tim Ramsey made
the all-tourney team. The Wildcats suffered defeats
in the County and District before the finals.
BOUNDING above the hands of the opponent senior Joh n Vi nes
adds his two point contribution in a drive for a victory.
JUNIOR HIGH
Junior high students discover
sweet reward of achievement
The halls of the Academy were brightened this
year by the eager young faces of the junior high
students. With their undying energy they supported
not only their own activities but all the
events of the senior hig-h as well.
The Junior Key Club awarded a fifty dollar work
scholarship to the boy who participated in the most
extracurricular work activities. This year's recipient
was David Tucker.
Last summer the junior cheerleaders, along- with
the seniors, attended the cheerleading- clinic at
Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Both
groups won trophies, with the juniors taking- two
first places and three second places. The seniors
also won the "spirit stick," awarded to the group
hav ing the most spirit throughout the contest.
