LADY DRAGON CLASSIC FEATURES 

CHALLENGES FOR NO. 6 HUTCHINSON 

The sixth-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team puts 

its home-court and regular-season winnings streaks on the line against two quality opponents 

in the Lady Dragon Classic on Friday and Saturday at 

the Sports Arena. 

Hutchinson (2-0) will play Marshalltown (0-1) at 7:30 

p.m. on Friday (note the time change) and Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa 

(1-1) at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will 

be videostreamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network 

beginning 15 minutes before tipoff. 

The Lady Dragons opened with two decisive victories 

over the Ottawa JV and Labette in the Quarterback Classic 

last weekend. HCC averaged 88.5 points per game and 

shot nearly 50 percent in two wins. Defensively, Hutchinson 

locked down again, holding both opponents to less than 27 

percent in each game.

The Lady Dragons put a 62-game home-court winning streak and a 43-game regularseason 

winning streak on the line. 

Marshalltown lost 71-62 to the Grand View JV on Nov. 1. Northern Oklahoma lost 

87-47 to Cowley, but defeated the Oklahoma Wesleyan JV 73-51 on Tuesday.

GAME DAY POLICIES 

>> Credentials: You must be a credentialed member of the 

media or have authorization by the HCC Sports Information 

Department to have access at the scorer’s table, upper 

press box and designated media areas of the Sports Arena. 

Credentials for print media, radio and television are required 

to cover Blue Dragon men’s basketball. Requests for 

season credentials or per-game credentials can be made 

by calling the HCC Sports Information Office at (620) 665- 

3593 or faxing on company letterhead a request signed by 

the sports editor/director to (620) 665-3394. 

>> Arena Access: Media will call is located on the west 

side of the Sports Arena at the southern most door. You 

must have a credential to gain access to the different 

media locations at the Sports Arena, including the scorer’s 

table, upper press box and photographer’s positions on the 

baseline. There is wireless internet available at the Sports 

Arena. You must obtain a temporary username and password 

to access the Arena’s wireless hub from the Sports 

Information Department, which will be located in seats 6 

through 10 at the scorer’s table. 

>> Statistics: Statistics will be provided after each half 

for all members of the media at the table and in the upper 

press box. If media personnel on the field need stats, they 

can go to the SID position at the scorer’s table at seats 6 

through 10. 

>> Postgame Interviews: Postgame interviews will be 

conducted with players and coach Ontjes just outside the 

HCC locker room, which is located on the northwest corner 

of the arena. 

>> Visiting Radio Stations: As per Jayhawk Conference 

bylaws, a courtesy radio line is available to the primary 

radio station of the visiting team. That phone line is located 

in the upper press box of the Sports Arena. Primary radio 

stations need to contact Glen Grunwald at (316) 617-7004 

for information about the phone line. Any other radio stations 

who are granted credentials must install their own 

phone lines at their own cost or use cellular technology to 

broadcast games. The sports information director will make 

all seating assignments for media. Live stats are available. 

>> Video Streaming: Sports Information Departments of 

opposing teams and primary radio stations who provide 

primary videostreaming as part of their broadcasts are 

allowed to do so at the Sports Arena without subject to 

paying a broadcast right fee. Any outside media sources 

who aren’t primary videostream providers of either the Blue 

Dragons or an opposing team must pay a $500 broadcast 

rights fee in former to videostream a game from the Sports 

Arena. Hutchinson Community College owns the broadcast 

rights to Blue Dragon Athletic events. 

About the 2012-13 Lady Dragons 

The Lady Dragons return four players from last season, three of whom played major 

minutes as freshmen. 

Sophomore Jasmine Patterson (6-foot, forward, Frisco, Texas) is the top returning scorer, 

averaging 7.8 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 43.4 percent from the field. 

Wing player Aja Sorrells (5-9, Athens, Ga.) and shooting guard Jade Herl (5-7, Goodland) 

both return. The athletic Sorrells averaged 5.1 points and shot nearly 46 percent from 

the field. She is slated to play more as a forward than a guard, but has the skill set to be productive. 

Herl had her moments from 3-point range as a freshman, but will be counted on to 

be a consistent threat from the arc this season. Herl averaged four points per game, shooting 

39.1 percent. 

Forward Kyrsten Crawford (6-foot, forward, Augusta) continues to battle back from an 

early-season injury as a freshmen that kept her out of the first 12 games. She played 15 games 

in a reserve role and averaged 1.1 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. 

Lady Dragon fans will also get their first look at University of Arkansas transfer Chrisstasia 

Walter. The 5-8 sophomore guard from Texarkana, Ark., hasn’t been in a competitive 

game in more than 18 months. As a freshman at Arkansas in 2011, the explosive Walter 

played in 26 games, started in five, and averaged 3.8 points per contest. 

A pair of Hutchinson products could put their stamps on this team early in the season. 

Central Christian all-stater Jamie Patrick and Hutchinson High graduate Briana Starks have 

received a lot of attention as the season gets underway. Patrick is the sister of All-American 

Laura Patrick (now at Emporia State). 

After having the two-headed point-guard monster that was Alysse Barlow and Lanicia 

Lawrence run the show the past two seasons, Ontjes looks to Jen’Von’Ta Hill (5-7, St. Paul, 

Minn.) and Tahniya Sweatt (5-8, Pasadena, Calif.) to run things on the floor. Walter may fit 

into the point-guard rotation as well. 

The 2012-13 Lady Dragons will be a shorter team this season and early on, expect Ontjes 

to try several different rotations to find the right mix.

Lady Dragons in the NJCAA National Poll 

Coming off a national runner-up season, the Hutchinson Community College women’s 

basketball team will start the upcoming season ranked No. 6 the NJCAA Women’s Division I 

Preseason Basketball Poll. 

This is the fourth-straight season that the HCC women have appeared in the NJCAA 

preseason poll. The No. 6 preseason pick is the highest in team history, topping last season’s 

starting point of No. 7. Two years ago, the 

Lady Dragons started the season ranked 

17th in the preseason poll. Three years ago, 

Hutchinson opened the season at No. 10.

the way to No. 2 in the final NJCAA national Division I Women’s basketball poll. The Lady 

Dragons maintained their highest-ever ranking for eight-straight weeks. The No. 2 ranking 

surpasses the previous high of No. 3, which HCC held for 5 of 6 weeks before jumping to No. 

2. 

Dating back to the 2010-11 season, Hutchinson has been ranked in the Top 10 in 

11-straight polls. That’s the longest run in the Top 10 since a 16-week run during the 1977 

and 1978 seasons.

HEAD COACH JOHN ONTJES 

Former Blue Dragon basketball great John 

Ontjes became the Hutchinson Community College 

women’s basketball program’s sixth head coach on 

Aug. 9, 2007. 

In just his second season, Ontjes led the Lady 

Dragons to their first Region VI championship in 32 

years. Two years later, HCC won its first Jayhawk 

West crown in 31 years. 

Then came 2011-12 … an 

unprecedented season in Lady 

Dragon Basketball history. HCC 

had an undefeated Jayhawk 

West championship, a Region 

VI crown and the best finish in 

team history, finishing as the 

2012 NJCAA national runnerup. 

Ontjes has been named the 

Jayhawk West Coach of the 

Year and the Kansas Basketball 

Coaches Association Coach of 

the Year twice each (2009, 2012). 

Ontjes, now in his sixth season, has a 152-22 

career record at Hutchinson. Ontjes reached 100 

wins (119 games)

Ontjes has made the Lady Dragon program a 

stepping stone to Division I. Ontjes has helped 

several players springboard to the next level. Ontjes 

has now has seven Division I signees and 17 overall 

four-year signees in his first five seasons.

Scouting Classic Opponents 

• Marshalltown - The Tigers are under new 

leadership in first-year coach Alison Lacey, an 

Iowa State University graduate who was the 10th 

overall selection by the Seattle Storm in the 2010 

NBA Draft. Lacey won a WNBA championship 

with Seattle in 2010. 

Marshalltown returns three players from an 

11-17 team last season in guards Shantal Tobler 

and Shana Lee and forward Latrice McMullen. 

The Tigers are 0-1 after a 71-62 loss to the 

Grace Land JV on Nov. 1. 

McMullen had 14 points and 11 rebounds to 

lead Marshalltown, which shot just 2 of 28 from 

3-point range. Tobler finished 0 of 9 from long 

range and scored 13 points. Mady VanMetre also 

scored 14 points. 

This will be the second-straight season that 

Hutchinson and Marshalltown will play each 

other. Last season at the Sports Arena, the Lady 

Dragons dominated 88-40. 

• Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa - NOC’s 

first meeting with a Jayhawk Conference opponent 

didn’t go so well as Cowley devoured the 

Mavericks 87-47 on opening night. 

The Mavericks rebounded for a 73-51 victory 

over the Oklahoma Wesleyan Junior Varsity on 

Tuesday night in their home opener. Northern 

Oklahoma was very balanced in the victory with 13 players scoring, including three in 

double figures: Deena Manning with 2; Sharon Karungi with 11; and Deborah Means also 

with 11 points. 

These teams haven’t met since John Ontjes’ first season in 2007 when they split a homeand-home 

series. The Mavericks handed the Lady Dragons their first loss of the 2007-08 

season with a 81-73 win at Tonkawa. The Lady Dragons downed NOC 72-64 three weeks 

later at the Sports Arena. 

Lady Dragon program a consistent winner 

HCC started women’s basketball in 1974. The Lady Dragons have amassed a record of 

781-330. 

Victory No. 750 came in an 85-77 double-overtime victory over Johnson County on Nov. 

25, 2012 at the Sports Arena. Victory No. 700 was a 63-50 win over Barton on Jan. 20, 2010 

in Great Bend. 

The Lady Dragons have won Region VI championships in 2012, 1009 and 1977. 

HCC has won five Jayhawk West titles in 2012, 2011, 1980, 1978 and 1977. 

The Lady Dragons have been consistent winners, posting winning records in 36 of 38 

seasons. Hutch has had at least 20 wins in a season 22 times and has won at least 15 games 

in 32 of 38 seasons. Last season was Hutchinson’s third 30-win season. The 2011 team went 

30-3 and the 2009 Region VI champion Lady Dragons had 31 victories. 

By going 29-0, the 2012 Lady Dragons also completed their second perfect regular 

season in team history, matching the 1977 NJCAA Tournament fourth-place Lady Dragons, 

who were 19-0 in the regular season.

The Lady Dragons are 424-110 all-time in 38-plus seasons at the Sports Arena. 

Win No. 400 came in an 81-58 victory over Barton on Jan. 20, 2011. Win No. 350 came 

in a 67-62 victory over No. 19 Cloud County on March 1, 2008. HCC’s 300th victory at the 

Sports Arena was a 54-44 win over Neosho County on Nov. 28, 2003. 

The 2012 Lady Dragons went 19-0 last season, completing the third-straight undefeated 

home season and the fifth overall in team history. The 2011 Lady Dragons were 18-0 at the 

Sports Arena after going 17-0 in 2010. The 1977 (10-0) and 1978 teams (8-0) are the other 

teams to post undefeated home seasons.

Home/Season-opening success 

Season and home openers have usually meant success for the Lady Dragons. 

The Lady Dragons are now 32-7 in season openers and have won the last 10 straight. The 

last loss was 50-48 setback to Howard College on 2000. 

The HCC women are even better in home openers, going 35-4 in those games. The Lady 

Dragons have won 12 straight season openers. The last loss in an opener at the Sports Arena 

was 68-67 to Northern Oklahoma in 1997. 

HCC’s 106-32 season-opening victory over the Tabor College JV in 2010 was the largest 

home-opening margin of victory, which was also tied the second largest in history. 

Lady Dragons look to continue defensive dominance 

Over the last decade HCC’s women have been 

one of the top defensive teams in the NJCAA. 

This season, the Lady Dragons go after their ninth 

national Top 10 defensive finish in the last 11 

seasons. 

They are off to a good start, holding their first 

two opponents to 43.5 points per game and both 

under 27-percent shooting. 

That runs the Lady Dragons’ streak of not allowing 

an opponent to shoot 50 percent or better 

to 172 straight games, which dates back to the 2007 

season. 

The 2012 national runner-up Lady Dragons 

finished ninth overall in defense, allowing 50.3 

points per game. No opponent shot better than 50 

percent and only two shot better than 40 percent. In fact, 17 of 37 opponents shot less than 

30 percent. 

The Lady Dragons have twice led the nation in scoring defense: 2011 and 2004. 

Ontjes now third on HCC coaching wins list 

Five of HCC’s six women’s basketball coaches 

have been at the post for at least 146 games. That 

means it’s tough to quickly move up the program’s 

coaching charts. 

Sixth-year head coach John Ontjes is doing just 

that, now ranking third on the list with 152 victories. 

Ontjes trails Tom Worthing (1982-93) who had 225 

victories and Rob Edmission (1993-2002), who has 

192 wins. 

Ontjes’ 87.4 winning percentage ranks first 

among HCC’s six head coaches. 

He has coached in 174 games, third most in team 

history.
