Neuropsychology; its growing pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations such as the<br />

International Neuropsychological Society (INS), the National Academy <strong>of</strong><br />

Neuropsychology (NAN) and Division 40 <strong>of</strong> the American Psychological<br />

Association; its recognition by the National Register <strong>of</strong> Health Care Providers;<br />

and establishment <strong>of</strong> credentialing boards such as the American Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Clinical Neuropsychology and the American Board <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Neuropsychology.<br />

Division 40 <strong>of</strong> the American Psychological Association defines a clinical<br />

neuropsychologist as follows:<br />

A Clinical Neuropsychologist is a pr<strong>of</strong>essional psychologist who applies<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> assessment and intervention based upon the scientific study<br />

<strong>of</strong> human behavior as it relates to normal and abnormal functioning <strong>of</strong> the<br />

central nervous system. The Clinical Neuropsychologist is a doctoral-level<br />

psychology provider <strong>of</strong> diagnostic and intervention services who has<br />

demonstrated competence in the application <strong>of</strong> such principles for human<br />

welfare following:<br />

• Successful completion <strong>of</strong> systematic didactic and experiential training<br />

in neuropsychology and neuroscience at a regionally accredited<br />

university;<br />

• Two or more years <strong>of</strong> appropriate supervised training applying<br />

neuropsychological service in a clinical setting;<br />

• Licensing and concentration to provide psychological services to the<br />

public by the laws <strong>of</strong> the state or province in which he or she lives;<br />

and<br />

• Review by one’s peers as a test <strong>of</strong> these competencies.<br />

The Concentration/Certificate in Clinical Neuropsychology was developed<br />

following the guidelines set forth by Division 40 <strong>of</strong> the American Psychological<br />

Association. Its requirements are continually under examination and revisions<br />

are expected.<br />

The Concentration/Certificate is designed to provide doctoral students with<br />

the opportunity to develop a solid competence and pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in clinical<br />

neuropsychology. For <strong>Adler</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s doctoral students, completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Concentration in Clinical Neuropsychology, in conjunction with the Psy.D. in<br />

Clinical <strong>Psychology</strong>, prepares graduates to complete advanced work (i.e.,<br />

postdoctoral fellowship), leading to careers in clinical neuropsychology and to<br />

board certification. Note that a year <strong>of</strong> post-doctoral training is required for<br />

licensure as a psychologist in most states and provinces. In addition, graduates<br />

are expected to continue training on a post-doctoral level and to acquire<br />

additional supervised clinical experience to increase both general and<br />
