Graduation Requirements<br />

1. Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> 33 credit hours, including all required<br />

courses.<br />

2. A cumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0 or higher and no more than<br />

two grades or six credit hours <strong>of</strong> “C.”<br />

3. Submission <strong>of</strong> completed Graduation Application and full payment <strong>of</strong><br />

all outstanding tuition and fees.<br />

4. Completion <strong>of</strong> Thesis with a grade <strong>of</strong> “A” or “B.”<br />

5. Faculty approval for graduation and recommendation to the Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Trustees for the conferral <strong>of</strong> the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Police <strong>Psychology</strong>.<br />

Specialization or Certificate in<br />

Substance Abuse Counseling<br />

The Substance Abuse Counseling Program is designed to provide<br />

education and training in the prevention, intervention, and treatment <strong>of</strong> Alcohol<br />

and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) disorders. The course work provides education<br />

in the theories, techniques, and the core functions <strong>of</strong> substance abuse<br />

counseling focusing on evidence-based research and best practice standards.<br />

This combination <strong>of</strong> specialized practicum supervision and experience for entry<br />

level practice in AODA or mentally ill substance abuser (MISA) clinical programs<br />

provides advanced alcohol and other drug abuse counselor training.<br />

This program is accredited as an Advanced Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse<br />

Counselor Training Program by the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Certification Association, Inc. (IAODAPCA). This certification<br />

process is based on the “Illinois Model for Certification <strong>of</strong> Alcohol and Other<br />

Drug Abuse Counselors.”<br />

This program may be taken as a concentration as part <strong>of</strong> the students’<br />

graduate studies at either the master’s or doctoral level. Students already with<br />

a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree may enroll in the program for a<br />

certificate in substance abuse counseling. In either case, students apply<br />

through the Admissions Department and have a personal interview with the<br />

Program Director.<br />

Course Requirements<br />

The concentration/certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling requires the<br />

following twelve (12) credits <strong>of</strong> coursework:<br />

436 Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual Aspects <strong>of</strong> Addictions 3 cr.<br />

437 Treatment <strong>of</strong> Addictive Disorders 3 cr.<br />
