Family Education Rights and Privacy Act – FERPA<br />

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) <strong>of</strong> 1974, as<br />

amended, sets forth requirements regarding the privacy <strong>of</strong> student records and<br />

affords students certain rights with respect to their educational records.<br />

Students have the following rights:<br />

• to inspect and review educational records by requesting it in writing<br />

to the Registrar’s Office,<br />

• to request the amendment <strong>of</strong> the student’s educational records that<br />

the student believes are inaccurate or misleading (Students should<br />

submit a written statement to the Registrar’s Office which will be<br />

placed in their academic file. Applicants who are not admitted to the<br />

<strong>School</strong> or who do not matriculate following admission have no right <strong>of</strong><br />

access to their submitted educational records.),<br />

• to have some control over the disclosure <strong>of</strong> information from their<br />

education records.<br />

Student education records will not be disclosed to anyone outside <strong>of</strong> those<br />

individuals within the <strong>Adler</strong> <strong>School</strong> educational community to whom the Act<br />

allows access, without the student’s written consent, except in the case that the<br />

request qualifies within one <strong>of</strong> the legal exceptions. To release your information<br />

to a third party, please fill out a FERPA – PIPA release form online at<br />

www.adler.edu.<br />

Directory information pertaining to students or graduates may be released<br />

to the public at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong>. Students or graduates, who prefer<br />

that their directory information be kept private, must inform the Registrar’s<br />

Office in writing.<br />

Students, who believe their privacy has been violated, have the right to file<br />

a written appeal to the Director <strong>of</strong> Student and Alumni Affairs.<br />

Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)<br />

The British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) sets out<br />

the rules for how private sectors and not-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it organizations, such as the<br />

<strong>Adler</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>Psychology</strong>, may collect, use, or disclose<br />

information about its students.<br />
