hierarchy, gender bias, and cultural fit.<br />

663 Effective Marriage and Family Therapy 3 Credits<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers an in-depth understanding <strong>of</strong> several evidence-based models<br />

for intervening with families and couples. This course covers a range <strong>of</strong><br />

dysfunction <strong>of</strong> marital and family systems and appropriate interventions.<br />

Emphasis is on the systematic application <strong>of</strong> techniques through theoretical<br />

analysis, intervention selection and role-playing <strong>of</strong> interventions. Students will<br />

be encouraged to examine how these models fit for themselves theoretically<br />

and personally, and how well they fit with a variety <strong>of</strong> clinical populations.<br />

664-665 M.A.F. Practicum I & II 1 Credit per term<br />

Prerequisites: Students enrolled in the M.A. in Marriage and Family Counseling<br />

program are required to register for M.A. Practica 664 and 665. Students must<br />

concurrently enroll in M.A.F. Practicum Seminar I (667) and II (668).<br />

Completion <strong>of</strong> a minimum <strong>of</strong> 28 credit hours <strong>of</strong> course work, including 200-203,<br />

402, 472, 505, 623, 641, 647, 651, and 662; and permission <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong><br />

Training and Community Service. This may not be transferred or waived. A<br />

student accepted into the M.A. in Marriage and Family Counseling program is<br />

required to complete at least 700 hours <strong>of</strong> supervised clinical experience over<br />

the course <strong>of</strong> at least nine months. Students enrolled in the Certificate in<br />

Marriage and Family program must also concurrently enroll in 664, 667, 665,<br />

and 668.<br />

667-668 M.A. Practicum Seminar in Marriage and 1 Credit per term<br />

Family I-III<br />

Prerequisite: Concurrent with Marriage and Family Practica (664-665). In order<br />

to register, students are required to be actively counseling couples and families.<br />

Students must either present audio or videotapes or simulate actual sessions<br />

for supervision. Rotating case presentations allow focus on intervention skills<br />

and theoretical analysis, as well as experiencing the role <strong>of</strong> case consultant.<br />

671 Structural and Sociocultural Bases 3 Credits<br />

<strong>of</strong> Health and Dysfunction<br />

Prerequisites: 350, 641. Traditionally, psychologists work within in<br />

circumscribed clinical contexts in which mental health issues are deemed<br />

functions <strong>of</strong> individual pathology. In fact, many mental health issues are<br />

symptomatic <strong>of</strong> structural phenomenon that characterize in the context in<br />

which individuals exist and over which they have limited influence, e.g., public<br />

policy, institutional behaviors, culturally-embedded biases. The objective <strong>of</strong> this<br />

course is to shed light on these structural variables and how they undermine<br />

human well being. In particular, the course will be designed to (1) provide<br />
