502-503 M.A. Practicum Seminar I-II 2 Credits per term<br />

(Vancouver campus)<br />

Prerequisite: Concurrent with Practica (506-507). Using a peer consultation<br />

model, Practicum Seminar provides students engaged in practicum training with<br />

an opportunity to discuss pr<strong>of</strong>essional development and the supervision<br />

experience. Specific cases students are working on in practica are discussed to<br />

illustrate general principles <strong>of</strong> counseling and intervention. The focus is on the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> knowledge, skills, values needed to provide competent and<br />

ethical counseling.<br />

505 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development, Issues and Ethics 3 Credits<br />

This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation for the<br />

ethical practice <strong>of</strong> psychology and counseling. Students will learn codes <strong>of</strong><br />

ethics <strong>of</strong> the American Counseling Association and the American Psychological<br />

Association, as well as the history <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional counseling and therapy. A<br />

review <strong>of</strong> theories <strong>of</strong> social justice and their relationship to ethical decision<br />

making will be provided. This course will also reinforce the basics <strong>of</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional writing and provide an introduction to supervision, consulting and<br />

leadership. Students will learn to apply ethical and pr<strong>of</strong>essional decision-making<br />

skills to current issues facing the fields <strong>of</strong> counseling and psychology.<br />

506-507 M.A. Practicum I-II 1 Credit per term<br />

Prerequisites: Concurrent with M.A. Practicum Seminar (502-503); completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> a minimum <strong>of</strong> 28 credit hours <strong>of</strong> course work, including 200-203, 402, 472,<br />

505, 516, 520, 623, 641, and 647; and permission <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong> Training<br />

and Community Service. This may not be transferred or waived.<br />

510 Preparation for Counseling Practice 3 Credits<br />

Prerequisites: 200-203 505, 502, 506. This course is designed to introduce the<br />

counseling psychology student to the varied facets <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice and<br />

development. It begins with an in-depth study <strong>of</strong> Illinois law concerning the<br />

requirements for licensure as a Mental Health Counselor, covering topics from<br />

educational to pre-and post-master’s supervised practice requirements. Other<br />

topics covered include the history and rationale behind pr<strong>of</strong>essional regulation<br />

in the counseling pr<strong>of</strong>ession, the licensing examination, the job search,<br />

specialization <strong>of</strong> practice, continuing education and training, private-practice<br />

considerations, and licensing laws in other states. A major emphasis is on<br />

helping the student explore pr<strong>of</strong>essional identity issues such as the role and<br />

responsibilities <strong>of</strong> a counselor, one’s relationship to a multidisciplinary treatment<br />

team, and the selection <strong>of</strong> appropriate pr<strong>of</strong>essional affiliations.<br />

514 Life Style Assessment and Diagnosis 3 Credits<br />

Prerequisite: 402. This course focuses on the principles <strong>of</strong> the fundamental<br />

<strong>Adler</strong>ian appraisal process. The range <strong>of</strong> assessment styles is discussed with an<br />
