339 Bi<strong>of</strong>eedback 3 Credits<br />

Prerequisites: 472, 520 (Applies to M.A. students only). This class presents the<br />

theory and application <strong>of</strong> applied psychophysiology (bi<strong>of</strong>eedback) as it is<br />

practiced today within mind/body medicine. A review <strong>of</strong> the components <strong>of</strong> the<br />

autonomic and central nervous system underlying common used<br />

psychophysiological measures (EEG, EMG, HR, etc.) will be presented. The class<br />

will examine common applications <strong>of</strong> bi<strong>of</strong>eedback and the evidence <strong>of</strong> its<br />

efficacy to specific disorders. The class will examine common<br />

psychophysiological assessment procedures, personality testing, and interview<br />

techniques employed in deciding upon the proper treatment methods for each<br />

client. The historical, cultural, philosophical, and spiritual contexts <strong>of</strong><br />

bi<strong>of</strong>eedback practice will also be examined to discuss important diversity related<br />

considerations in treatment planning.<br />

344 Historical and Theoretical Perspectives <strong>of</strong> Art Therapy 3 Credits<br />

This course introduces the history, philosophy, theory, and practice <strong>of</strong> art<br />

therapy within counseling psychology. The fundamental elements <strong>of</strong> art therapy<br />

established in the U.S. and internationally are addressed with attention to the<br />

influences <strong>of</strong> diverse cultural values, beliefs and practices. Learning in this<br />

course will be attained through experiential exercises, lectures as well as<br />

written and oral assignments.<br />

345 Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Planning 3 Credits<br />

in Art Therapy<br />

This course introduces purpose (functions), issues, and process <strong>of</strong> clinical art<br />

therapy assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning. History, information<br />

and skills <strong>of</strong> art therapy assessments, psychological diagnosis and treatment<br />

planning are presented. The main categories <strong>of</strong> art therapy assessment, the<br />

tools <strong>of</strong> report preparation and treatment planning are addressed with attention<br />

to the influences <strong>of</strong> diverse cultural values, beliefs and practices. Experiential<br />

art activities, lectures, and regular written assignment <strong>of</strong>fer the primary means<br />

<strong>of</strong> learning for this course.<br />

346 Use <strong>of</strong> Art in Group Therapy 3 Credits<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers models, approaches and skills in group art therapy with<br />

culturally diverse groups and clinical populations. Through readings,<br />

presentations, art making activities, and class discussions students gain<br />

understanding and experience to facilitate individual expression and change in<br />

group art therapy.<br />
