Families
“benefit” from
living with
schizophrenia
Living with someone with
schizophrenia can have a
positive impact on their family,
according to a preliminary
study by QUT
Rachel Morton is studying
the impact schizophrenia
has on family members.
The Messenger www.northlakesmessenger.com.au 6

As part of her doctorate in clinical
psychology, Rachel Morton from QUT's
School of Psychology and Counselling,
has interviewed relatives of people with
schizophrenia to better understand the
impact schizophrenia has on the family.
"Family members frequently reported
that the nature of schizophrenia meant
their relative required a range of support,
including financial, social, and assistance
in getting treatment, all of which were
reported to take a large emotional toll
on the family members themselves," Ms
Morton said.
"It was common for people to report
frustration with some mental health
professionals and systems.
"However, a unique finding of this study was
the reporting of some unexpected positive
personal growth experienced as a result of
the challenges of living with someone with
schizophrenia.
"Most relatives identified that having a
relative with schizophrenia contributed to
their
own personal development, such as
having greater compassion for those with
mental health issues and having a greater
appreciation for what is important in their
life."
Ms Morton said for example, one participant
said living with someone with schizophrenia
had influenced their own career choice to
become a health professional.
In another example, a family member
credited living with someone with
schizophrenia as giving their life meaning.
"So even if it's been a disadvantage that
my son has this mental illness, it's also
been enriching in that my life is not just
empty, meaningless. I've got purpose," the
participant said.
As a result of the findings, Ms Morton is
now embarking on a worldwide survey to
look at whether or not the phenomenon
of experiencing benefits and personal
growth, is common across a wider crosssection
of families living with people with
schizophrenia.
Ms Morton is seeking people over the
age of 16, who have a first degree family
member with schizophrenia and who have
lived with that person at some point during
their diagnosis, to take part in a new online
survey.
"I want to investigate this issue more widely
and further explore the stress they feel and
how family members cope with this stress,"
she said.
"This survey is important because family
members often get forgotten when health
professionals are dealing with people with
schizophrenia.
"This research will help clinicians and health
care professionals better treat people with
schizophrenia and effectively support their
families."
Participation
You are eligible to participate if you have a
first degree family member (such as a child,
parent or sibling) who has been diagnosed
with schizophrenia, you are aged 16 years
or older, and have lived with that person
at some point in your life after they were
diagnosed. If you have participated in an
earlier study of “Living with Schizophrenia
in the Family” (interviews) unfortunately
you are not able to participate in this study,
however if you have a member of your
family interested in participating and meet
all other eligibility requirements they would
be welcome to participate.
Your participation will involve completing
an online anonymous battery of self-report
questionnaires that will take approximately
20-25 minutes of your time. Questionnaires
will cover areas such as basic demographic
information, including some questions
about your medical history, perceived
stress, your personal characteristics, coping
styles, use of social support and potential
benefits. If you agree to participate you are
not required to complete any question(s)
that you may be uncomfortable answering.
To recognise your contribution, should you
choose to participate, the research team is
offering participants the chance to enter
a random draw to receive one of two $50
Coles/Myer vouchers.
Future Looks
Bright for
Region’s Young
Recruits
Unitywater has welcomed six young
engineers as part of its inaugural
graduate program. Fresh out of university,
the civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical
and environmental engineers began their
induction recently as the newest employees
of the region’s water supply and sewerage
provider.
The graduate recruitment program is a new
addition to the employment and training
opportunities provided by Unitywater and
follows this year’s intake of apprentices.
George Theo, CEO of Unitywater, said the
graduate and apprenticeship programs
place the water supply and sewerage utility
as a key provider of training and professional
development in the Sunshine Coast and
Moreton Bay regions.
“As an essential service, it’s important for
Unitywater to plan ahead, not just to meet
the demands of our growing population but
to make sure we have the right level and mix
of skills to run our operations into the future.
“This means attracting, developing and
retaining excellent staff, and actively
partnering with them in career development
and succession planning.”
To gain entry to Unitywater the young
engineers had to impress the selection
panel in a highly competitive process that
ranked more than 200 applications for a
place on the program.
Mr Theo said the young engineers will work
their way through various departments over
their three year program, gaining a range of
valuable experience. Throughout the three
years, Unitywater will actively support the
professional development of each through
Engineering Education Australia.
While the young engineers have the
opportunity to apply their university studies
in a practical and hands-on way, there is
also a bigger picture to see. Environmental
engineer Joseph Xu hopes to be part of the
solution to climate change.
“Engineering is not just about designing,
building or operating infrastructure, it’s
about solving complex problems facing
our communities,” Joseph said. “I want to
establish a solid grounding in engineering in
the water industry while gradually moving
into a position to improve sustainability
outcomes.”
In early March four new apprentices – two
mechanical and two electrical – comprised
Unitywater’s second ever intake into
its apprenticeship program providing
vocational training on the path to formal
trade qualifications.
“Our aim is to launch the careers of our
apprentices and graduate engineers
with excellent training and professional
development. Importantly, we hope they
will choose to continue with Unitywater
into the future.”
Unitywater is a major employer in the
Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions,
and is committed to making work
opportunities possible for the youth in the
region.
License
Reform for
Queensland
Drivers
Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott
Emerson said the Queensland Driver
Licence Reform package included changes to
the Q-SAFE driver tests, older driver medical
certificates and motorcycle license tests.
“This reform is an important step in our efforts
to make our roads safer and tackle the current
high road toll,” Mr Emerson said.
“There is a focus on ensuring our younger
drivers are better prepared and educated as
they are the most at-risk group when it comes
to fatalities on our roads. Last year 84 young
drivers were involved in fatal crashes – five
ahead of the previous year.
“For the first time in 15 years we will be making
changes to the Q-SAFE program, which will
now include a greater emphasis on highrisk
manoeuvres such as turning across oncoming
traffic or merging at higher speeds.”
“We have found older drivers are not over
represented in crashes and I agree with the
panel that there isn’t a need to sit further
driving tests once you reach 75.
“I believe this is a sensible change to protect
older drivers, particularly as the population
gets older.”
Other key reforms include adopting a
simplified, national definition for highpowered
vehicles manufactured after 1
January, 2010, education and awareness
information to support older drivers, their
families and their doctor. The process to
upgrade from a P1 licence will also be
streamlined.
The reforms will investigate improvements to
the motorcycle test for new riders, including
compulsory pre-learner off-road training and
assessment.
Better educated
younger drivers
and changes for older
drivers are included in a
package of driver license
reforms which have been
recommended by some of
Queensland’s leading road
safety experts
The pilot for the new test is expected to be in
place by mid-2014.
Mr Emerson said the package also included
changes for older drivers with medical
certificates now valid for a 12-month period
for drivers aged 75 and over.
“The committee felt an annual tick from
their doctor would enable older drivers to
monitor their health on a more regular basis
and therefore improve road safety outcomes,”
he said.
“In the past we’ve seen some tragic accidents
from young motorcycle riders. This will focus
on requirements to undertake practical on
and off road assessment aimed at improving
rider skill and experience,” he said.
All license reforms underwent community
consultation in 2012. Full recommendations
will be available at www.tmr.qld.gov.au(
http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/ ). The Queensland
Driver Licence Reform will be implemented
progressively in 2013 and 2014.
2013 Federal Budget
People with disability, students, seniors and anyone who hates
sitting in traffic are winners in the 2013 Federal Budget according
to Federal Member for Petrie, Yvette D’Ath.
“For over 100 years, Federal Labor Governments have been
responsible for incredible social reforms and I am proud to say
this year is no exception,” Yvette D’Ath MP said.
“In 1909 Federal Labor introduced the aged pension; in 1984 we
brought in Medicare; 1992 saw the introduction of compulsory
superannuation; and in 2010 we stood up for working parents
with a national paid parental leave scheme.
“This year we have cemented a funding source for DisabilityCare
– a new national disability insurance scheme – making sure our
nation is a fairer place, giving choice and control over their lives
to the most vulnerable members of our community and with it
the ability to achieve their dreams.
“We have put billions of dollars on the table for the biggest
education reforms in decades to make sure our students will be
ready for the high skilled, high paid jobs of the future and our
classrooms can compete with the best in the world.
“And, we are building on our unprecedented infrastructure
investment by funding more job-creating road and rail projects,
with hundreds of millions of dollars committed locally to
delivering the Moreton Bay Rail Link and upgrades on the
Gateway Motorway and Bruce Highway.
“Despite the fact that work has well and truly commenced on
the rail line from Kippa-Ring to Petrie, I still regularly encounter
sceptism from locals that the trains are coming,” Mrs D’Ath said.
“I am thrilled to say to those people that this Federal Budget is
providing a very real $83 million to the project in the 2013-14
financial year.
“Other local infrastructure wins include $44 million in this financial
year for upgrades of the Gateway Motorway and Bruce Highway
between Bald Hills and Caboolture; and $3 million more for Roads
to Recovery projects in the Moreton Bay region.
“This investment comes on top of Federal Labor’s $718 million
commitment to upgrading the Gateway Motorway from Nudgee
to the Deagon Deviation announced earlier this week,” she said.
Seniors are also set to benefit in this year’s budget with money
for better internet facilities and training, and new incentives for
pensioners looking to downsize their homes.
“We are investing more in social infrastructure for seniors making
funds available in places where we have installed Broadband
Kiosks for new computers, touch screen monitors and training
on personal security and cyber safety,” Mrs D’Ath said.
“This is good news for thousands of residents living in six
retirement and aged care facilities across the Petrie electorate,
from Aspley to Scarborough, Carseldine and Deception Bay.
“And, from 1 July next year local pensioners who have owned their
homes for 25 years or more can downsize and bank up to 80% of
any sale profits (up to $200,000) that won’t be subject to income
means testing.
“This is a budget that supports jobs, productivity and economic
growth and the message is clear.
“A Federal Labor Government will stand up and act now for our
future: for the future of our kids – in our classrooms and in the
workforce, for people with disability now and in generations to
come; and we will revolutionise our rail networks, our roads, our
physical and digital highways, so that families can spend more
time together instead of sitting in traffic.
Spend-less Shoes
Celebrates 25 years of Success
The Spend-less Shoes North Lakes store is celebrating the
Australian company’s 25 years of success as it continues to
expand its national retail footprint despite challenging market
conditions.
Spend-less Shoes North Lakes which opened on 25th October
2007 has maintained a strong business model which has seen
it expand at a rate of approximately 18% in the past four years
with more than 800 staff across the country.
Local Area Manager Louise Frearson, says the contribution of
local employees has been integral to the performance of the
business in the region and recognised nationally as the Spendless
“We firmly believe that our people are our greatest asset and
have made it possible for the business to continue to grow. Our
hard-working team continue to provide the highest level of
customer service to help build a loyal customer base of repeat
clientele, says Louise.
Business growth would not be possible without the company's
ability to evade recent economic turmoil experienced by
the retail industry, which Managing Director, John Charlton
attributes to the company’s dedicated approach to offering
added value to customers with a seamless online to in store
experience and the latest fashion looks for less.
“Keeping costs low and passing on the savings to our customers
is an integral part of what we do, our dedicated buyers travel
regularly to the fashion capitals of the world to uncover
popular trends that can be made accessible and affordable to
all customers.
“We also have a team of in-house designers dedicated to the
demands of the Australian market developing exclusive brands
to deliver the best value for money,” explains Mr Charlton.
From humble beginnings in South Australia where the business
opened its first store in Glenelg in 1988, which remains open to
this day, Spend-less Shoes is a proud Australian retail chain that
continues to have a positive impact within communities across
the country creating job opportunities and supporting local and
Is Sitting the New Smoking?
Earlier this year, the Harvard Business Review
published an article by Nilofer Merchant, “Sitting
is the Smoking of our Generation.”
Australians seem to agree.
new survey shows nine out of ten
A Australians think the most significant
cause of obesity is too much time sitting
down and not exercising.
The result comes from a nationally
representative survey of 1000 Australians
conducted by UMR for Spinal Health Week
2013.
Launching Spinal Health Week 2013, Andrew
McNamara, CEO of the Chiropractors
Association of Australia said, “Australians
have got it right and sitting may well be the
new smoking.”
“What sitting has in common with smoking
is that they are both bad habits and they are
both harmful to health,” Mr McNamara says.
Sixty-three per cent of Australian adults are
overweight or obese, a figure still on the rise.
“The new wonders of technology have
brought with it a sitting down habit
that is hard to break and has alarming
consequences,” Mr McNamara said.
The CAA has research suggesting office
workers in Australia are now sitting for
up to fourteen hours a day. Sitting down
means electrical activity in the legs shut off;
Calorie burning drops to one per minute
and Enzymes that help break down fat drop
90%.
Mr McNamara says workplaces should
consider introducing at least one walking
meeting a day and get a workplace
presentation from a health practitioner
such as a Chiropractor on how to sit right
and improve your postural fitness.
Mr McNamara says, “The urban myth is
that you can off-set a sedentary lifestyle
by simply watching your diet and getting
some exercise. But this ignores the modern
reality that you might be sitting down for up
to fourteen hours a day. It is like saying you
can work around smoking a pack a day by
going for a jog.”
The next most likely cause of obesity
according to Australians is “We are now time
poor and eat quick convenient foods that
often are not good for us.” Eighty per cent
thought that a significant factor in obesity.
Women are more concerned than men
about ‘confusing advice on diets and
exercise’ (61/56%) and that ‘supermarkets
now display and sell far more food that are
higher in sugar than ten years ago’ (81/72%)
and the ‘high cost of good nutritional fresh
foods’ (67/59%).
Different views may be heard amongst
experts as to the true cause of Australia’s
obesity epidemic, but amongst the general
population, they are confident sitting is
the culprit, a view shared most strongly by
women (92%) and our seniors over seventy
(96%).
Mr McNamara says it’s wrong to paint sitting
as just a generational attribute, “But for
a very few, we are all digital natives now.
Technology has ramped up sitting down
for hours on end, as a bad habit across all
demographics.”
“I am of course in no way suggesting that
less energy or resources be devoted to
combating smoking,” Mr McNamara says.
The CAA is promoting Spinal Health Week
during 20-26 May this year. A Sit Right
widget may be downloaded to your desktop
and an App is available which will record
how far you walk.
Walking to work alone on a cold, smoggy
morning will not have the same health
benefits as walking along a beach at sunset
with someone you love, according to
Professor Tim Olds, Director of the Health
and Use of Time Group at the University of
South Australia.
Professor Olds will present his research at
the Heart Foundation Conference (16-18
May) in Adelaide today.
The conference is a three day event for
health professionals looking at new
research, practices and policies to beat
cardiovascular disease, Australia’s number
one cause of death.
“Exercise is good for us all, but some types
of exercise appear to be better than others,”
said Professor Olds.
Doctors Prescribe
Romantic Strolls
Sunset walks along the beach
benefit health
“In particular, leisure-time physical activity
such as playing with animals and the kids
reduces the risk of death from heart disease
and depression much more than physical
activity at work or walking to and from work.
“The evidence in this area shows us
that both leisure-time and work-related
moderate physical activity reduce the risk
of cardiovascular disease, but the reduction
from leisure time activity (20%) is almost
twice as great as the reduction from workrelated
physical activity (11%).
“I argue that in spite of what the physical
activity guidelines say, not all types of
physical activity are equivalent.”
“We should rethink the guidelines to include
information about what we do, where, when
and with whom we do it,” said Prof Olds.
Heart Foundation National CEO, Dr Lyn
Roberts said that this is very interesting
work.
Health professionals, especially those
who regular prescribe physical activity
to patients or the general public, need to
understand the mechanisms that lead to
improvements in heart health. It is clear that
some types of physical activity are better
others, and therefore drilling into these
subtleties maybe an important next step.
“It will be valuable to review guidelines in
light of this information and develop more
targeted messages,” Dr Roberts said.
“With more than 50% of the population
not physically active enough for health
benefits, including 36% who do very little
or not exercise at all, the Heart Foundation’s
position is that any physical activity is better
than nothing.”
We know that being inactive is a major risk
factor for heart disease, the number one
killer of Australians.
Court Ordered Wills Encompassing
Estate Planning Provisions
In 2006 amendments were made to the Queensland Succession Act
to give the Court the power to make, alter or revoke wills for persons
lacking the requisite level of testamentary capacity. The person on
whose behalf the will is to be made must be alive at the time that
the Court order is made, and the application must be supported
by a draft will, alteration or revocation for the Court’s consider.
Substantial information must also be provided to the Court in
support of the application to make, alter or revoke the will including:
• Information regarding the person’s lack of capacity and the
likelihood that the person will acquire or regain testamentary
capacity;
• The likely size of the estate;
• Any evidence available of the person’s wishes.
The Court will then consider the evidence provided and assess
whether the draft will is one that the person would have made if
they’d had testamentary capacity.
In a recent landmark decision, an application was made to the
Court by a testator’s three adult grandsons. The testator had made
a will in 2001 in which he essentially bequeathed the whole of
his estate to his three grandsons. At the time of making the will,
the testator’s solicitor suggested that he consider establishing a
testamentary trust for each of his grandsons because of the large
sum the grandsons would potentially receive (approximately $4
million each). Testamentary trusts were suggested as they are
useful tools for asset protection and tax planning purposes, where
the beneficiary does not receive the capital at the time of death
but rather receives distributions of income from the capital until
the trust is ultimately wound up at some stage in the future. As
there was some urgency involved in the preparation of the wills,
testamentary trusts were not included in the will. The testator
subsequently lost capacity in 2005 before reconsidering the option
of establishing a testamentary trust will for his grandsons.
In the application to the Court by the three grandsons, the Court
was asked not to alter the beneficiaries of the estate nor was it
asked to alter what share those beneficiaries would receive from
the estate. Rather the Court was asked to approve a codicil which
would establish a testamentary trust for each of the nomination
beneficiaries. The testamentary trusts, if approved, would provide
asset protection to the grandchildren and assist with tax planning.
Importantly, evidence was given by the three grandsons that they
each consented to the testamentary trusts, that they were solvent
and that they were not aware of any significant claims by creditors
against them or any circumstances which might give rise to a claim in
the future. Further evidence was given by mother of the grandsons,
who was the only person eligible to make a claim on the estate. The
mother stated that she supported the grandsons’ application and
did not wish to share in her father’s estate as she was self-sufficient.
The Supreme Court, in authorising the draft codicil, stated in its
judgment that it was satisfied that the draft codicil submitted by
the grandsons was one that the testator would have made if he
had capacity. The evidence of the grandsons and their mother was
crucial to the Court’s order approving the codicil which created the
testamentary trusts.
Although the Court did ultimately approve the testamentary trusts
submitted by the grandsons, the time and expense of the application
could have been avoided by the testator regularly reviewing his will
and consulting his solicitor regarding any amendments that may
be required to take into account the changing needs of his estate’s
beneficiaries.
Get to know anxiety
By Dr Anita, Metro North Brisbane Medicare Local
On average, one in four people will
experience an anxiety disorder at some
stage in their life and most will not recognise
it, which is why beyondblue recently
launched a landmark national campaign
to encourage Australians to ‘Get to Know
Anxiety’.
A YouTube short film released as part of the
campaign tells the viewer ‘You need to know
anxiety to be free from it.’ Considering the
high rate of anxiety in our community, it is a
particularly appropriate message.
Featuring Australian‐born and
internationally acclaimed actor Ben
Mendelsohn, the beyondblue film was
viewed more than 100,000 times in the first
week.
The campaign was based on qualitative
market research beyondblue undertook in
August 2012 through an online community
involving more than 350 Australians who
shared their personal experiences of anxiety.
Having feelings of anxiety from time to
time is part of being human. For example,
people can feel anxious when they are
under pressure meeting work deadlines,
sitting exams or speaking in front of a group
of people.
However, for some people these anxious
feelings happen for no apparent reason or
continue even after the stressful event has
passed. When these feelings seriously affect
a person’s day-to-day life, it may mean they
have an anxiety disorder.
For a person experiencing an anxiety
disorder, their anxious feelings cannot be
brought under control easily. An anxiety
disorder can be quite a serious condition
that makes it difficult for a person to cope
with daily life. The sooner they get help, the
more likely they are to recover.
There are many types of anxiety disorders
and the symptoms vary. Some people have
sudden unexplained panic attacks that
can seem out of their control, while others
experience phobias like agoraphobia (fear
of being in an open space).
Many people experience recurrent thoughts
that cause them to feel anxious. They often
recognise these thoughts as being silly,
but having these thoughts can still lead to
compulsive behavior such as needing to
check and re-check things, or repeat certain
actions (such as washing their hands).
Particularly relevant to our soldiers who
have returned from the battlefields of
Afghanistan and Iraq, Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD) is another recognised
anxiety disorder that can happen after a
person experiences a traumatic event.
A General Practictioner (GP) is the best
starting point for someone seeking
professional help with an anxiety disorder.
GPs can check for any physical health
problem or medications that may be
contributing to an anxiety disorder, discuss
available treatments, and work with
their patients to prepare a Mental Health
Treatment Plan.
Patients who have a GP Mental Health
Treatment Plan, or who are being managed
by a GP under a referred psychiatrist
assessment and management plan, or
have been referred by a psychiatrist or
paediatrician, have access to certain mental
health service items on the Medicare
Benefits Schedule.
Eligible patients can claim up to ten
Medicare rebates per calendar year for
individual services provided by clinical
psychologists, appropriately trained GPs or
registered psychologists or appropriately
trained social workers and occupational
therapists.
Eligible patients can also claim up to
ten Medicare rebates per calendar year
for group services provided by clinical
psychologists and/or other allied mental
health professionals.
Counselling Column
With Leonie Schilling
I can’t seem to achieve anything
Leonie is a qualified private practitioner.
For appointments please phone 3886 2715 or
0423 653 841
E-mail: leonieschilling@bigpond.com
Hello Leonie,
I always read your page in the Messenger
and look forwards to Thursdays. I have a
question for you. I have issues that I have
been in counselling for and it never helped.
She spent the time doing abc therapy and
saying that I had to confront my issues and
so on. It was never helpful as I just couldn’t
keep up with her and I always left the
appointments feeling confused and feeling
worse.
My problem and I would say that it is my
biggest is that I can’t seem to achieve
anything. My house is unorganised, my car is
a tip and I can never stay on top of my study.
I am feeling overwhelmed with all I have to
do. I work full time and study part time and
so far I have been keeping all the balls in the
air. My counsellor always banged on and on
about consequences but I know that living
like this has the consequence of me feeling
overwhelmed but still I can’t change things.
I feel so hopeless at the moment. My dad
is always comparing me to my sister who is
super organised and to my mum who has
achieved a lot in her life and keeps the house
looking like a magazine. Basically what I
want in the short term is an organised house
and to keep up with my studies. I think you
can help me because I always read your
page and I always understand what you are
saying. I said this to my dad and he said well
ask Leonie in the Messenger. So please help
me with this.
Name withheld by request/Mango Hill
I wonder if you told your counsellor that she
needed to try something else and that she
was going too fast for your particular needs.
The therapy that I believe your counsellor
was using is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
also well known as CBT and this works by
using the ABC model.
The A is for the Activating Event. In your case
it may have been falling behind in studies
and feeling overwhelmed.
The B is for your Belief about the event. Now
I am not sure but perhaps your belief about
the event would be something like “I can’t
keep up, there is too much to do and I am a
failure” and so on.
And the C is for Consequence. In your case
the consequence (the result) is your belief
that you will never cope and so a sense of
hopelessness descends and you don’t try
new strategies.
So Cognitive Behavioural Therapy aims to
change behaviours by changing the belief
about the events in our life. Remember that
old saying “I think, therefore I am” well we
could just as easily say “I think, therefore I
feel” because every thought has an emotion
attached to it. Try this: Imagine a basket of
cute and cuddly puppies in living colour
and notice how you feel. Now imagine in
living colour the last time you were abused
by someone: how do you feel now? Can you
now see how powerful our thoughts are in
terms of impacting on how we feel? So if you
were able to change your belief about falling
behind to something like, “I can catch up.
Everyone usually struggles to study when
they work full time. I can recover because I
have done it before and I can do it again” the
consequence would be very different and
would have a different effect on your state
of happiness, stress and ability to cope.
I would say here that I feel that I could only
give you true meaningful help as a client in
care. Although I do believe that CBT is an
effective therapy for your issues, if that is all
as clear as mud, let’s try something else.
If I were to give you an exam on how your
mother and your sister navigate this world,
how they operate and what they would
likely do in any given situation, I am betting
that you would get a High Distinction. As
we move through life and have exposure to
our family of origin, we will obtain a certain
level of incidental learning. Somewhere
in your Hippocampus are the memories
of how these women do everything
because throughout your life you have
repeatedly observed them doing/reacting/
managing and many other skills. So how
can this help you? Try this. When standing
in your disorganised bedroom, feeling
overwhelmed and not knowing where to
start. Say to yourself “Ok Hippocampus, tell
me what my sister would do”. I believe that
the answer will come to you so fast that you
won’t have time to blink, but then you have
to actually do the work. For example if the
answer comes back something like “She
would empty this room out completely,
clean it from top to bottom including
skirting boards, floors, ceiling fan, windows
and on, she would cull what she doesn’t
need by trowing out/donating unused
clothes and shoes. She would go and buy
an organising system for the wardrobe from
someplace like IKEA or Storage World and
then only bring back into the room those
things which have been cleaned, are useful
or bring joy such as art and so on.
Now this would most likely be a hard task
for you to undertake and you may lack
motivation. However if you are serious
about change you need to find this
motivation. It really is only one day’s work
for a huge pay off! Due to the information
that you have disclosed to me about your
sister and mother, I believe that you have
access to all the knowledge you need, it’s
right there in the limbic system of your
brain....you just need to get up and get
on with it. You could apply this to all your
issues by just remembering what the family
member/friend with the greatest skill in any
given situation would do and just do it. Just
do it! Just do it! Just do it! I believe that when
you see and feel the results of this proactive
behaviour, the motivation will build and
change your life.
Until next week, Leonie
up their minds prematurely will only result in further
delay. Give this person some space and they will
eventually come around.
Libra- Don't feel bad about opting for the lesser evil.
Given the current of events, you want to move with
them, not against them.
Scorpio- Sometimes you can be so invested in getting
your way that you're the last one to realise it wasn't a
good idea. Over the next few days you will come to
your senses.
Sagittarius- A loved one or colleague won't move past
that grudge unless you acknowledge your part in it. A
simple apology is all it takes.
Capricorn- One phase of a project comes to an end as
another gets underway. Take time out to catch your
breath. You want to be fresh for the next part.
FREE Rodent Treatment with Termite Inspection
BSA 108 7905
Rats and mice become more of a problem during the colder winter months as they move inside seeking
warmth and shelter. They are carriers of germs and disease, and can be very destructive – often
chewing through wiring, timber and furniture.
To help pre-empt a rodent infestation Sandgate Pest Control recommend completing a treatment before
the rodents enter your home. This way, if they do enter, they are not given the opportunity to build a
nest and establish themselves inside your home.
To help protect your home, Sandgate Pest Control are offering all North Lakes Messenger readers a free
rodent treatment with every Timber Pest Inspection. This offer is valid for all inspections completed
before the end of May 2013.
The free treatment also includes professional advice on rodent proofing for your home.
Contact Sandgate Pest Control today to organise your inspection and free rodent treatment
Real Estate
REIQ
and RP
Data Join
Forces
Property data powerhouse RP Data has become a strategic alliance
partner of The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) in a
move that will benefit both consumers and practitioners.
REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said the joining of forces between two of
Queensland’s most recognised real estate brands was a logical one.
“The REIQ has been a trusted name for real estate professionals and
consumers alike for more than 95 years and we remain committed to
a contemporary and progressive vision, one which aligns well with
an industry leader such as RP Data,” he said.
“Like RP Data, the REIQ produces a range of highly-regarded
statistical research and this partnership will allow us to reach new
heights of data analysis that will ultimately benefit the marketplace.”
The partnership will extend beyond the provision of more
sophisticated data with plans for new joint research publications as
well as educational opportunities between the two organisations
in the works.
“We all know that in the real estate game data is king,” Mr Kardash
said.
“This partnership has the potential to open up significant avenues of
opportunities that we look forward to delivering to our membership,
enabling them to remain market-leaders.”
RP Data CEO Graham Mirabito said that this strategic alliance allows
for deeper engagement with key REIQ clients in Queensland and
highlights market leadership by both parties.
“In particular our partnership reinforces the role of REIQ as the peak
industry body committed to enhancing professionalism, efficiency
and effectiveness of its members supported by the country’s largest,
independent and most respected data and analytics company,” Mr
Mirabito said.

Vacancy Rates
Vary
The first quarter of 2013 saw mixed
fortunes for rental markets across
Queensland, according to the latest Real
Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) results.
The REIQ March residential rental vacancy
rate survey found that while demand
remained strong for rental properties in
South East Queensland, some key mining
areas experienced significant vacancy rate
falls.
The results highlight the profound influence
resource companies have on some regional
rental markets, though most major regions
throughout the State had posted a vacancy
rate of 2.5 per cent or less. A vacancy rate of
3 per cent is generally considered to be the
equilibrium point of supply and demand.
“Mackay and Gladstone both recorded
significant increases in vacancy rates as at
the end of March due to less demand for
rental properties from mining companies,
and an element of increases in the supply of
rental stock,” REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said.
“On the other hand, Toowoomba retained its
mantle as one of the tightest rental markets
in the State, and Bundaberg also recorded
constrained rental conditions due to the
floods in their region earlier this year.”
The REIQ March vacancy rate for Bundaberg
was 0.8 per cent, down from 2.4 per cent at
the end of December. A number of REIQ
accredited agents have been receiving
between at least six to 10 applicants per
rental listing.
The rental market tightened even further
in the Toowoomba region, with a vacancy
rate of 0.8 per cent recorded as at the end
of March. Over the past year, vacancy levels
have remained extremely low. During the
survey, REIQ accredited agents made note of
a chronic undersupply of the ‘right’ property
to meet rental demand.
In Brisbane, the vacancy rate nudged
slightly higher to 2.1 per cent for March, up
from 2 per cent previously. Brisbane’s inner
city recorded a vacancy rate of 2 per cent,
unchanged from December 2012. While the
rental market remains constrained, some
REIQ accredited agents have noted lower
demand within specific areas now that the
academic intake period has ceased.
“Even though the academic calendar is
in full swing, the Brisbane rental market
remains competitive with about two to five
applications per rental listing,” Mr Kardash
said.
“Part of the reason why the market is
certainly a case of more demand than
supply is that first home buyers are largely
remaining on the sidelines of the sales
market following the removal of the First
Home Owners Grant last year.”
A vacancy rate of 2.5 per cent was recorded
on the Gold Coast at the end of March
with rental market conditions continuing
to tighten in the region. Improving
employment conditions are no doubt partly
a catalyst for the recent drops in the coast’s
vacancy rate.
The rental market in the Sunshine Coast
region eased to 2.2 per cent however
remains at tight levels. Throughout the
Sunshine Coast region, vacant properties are
attracting between two to five applicants
per listing.
The Mackay rental market saw a huge
turnaround in rental demand at the end of
March, recording a vacancy rate of 6.5 per
cent – up from 3.1 per cent in December.
Gladstone also experienced a significant
weakening of its rental market, recording a
vacancy rate of 5.9 per cent, up from 2.1 per
cent at the end of December.
