IE308 Explorations in Mentorship<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit additional elective credit.<br />

Prerequisite: Third-trimester junior intending to register for IE405 Mentorship-Senior<br />

Research in senior year <strong>and</strong> selection by the Mentorship Coordinator based on<br />

Mentorship Application process.<br />

Meeting pattern: Two periods per week.<br />

Mentorship Explorations is for <strong>NCSSM</strong> junior students interested in doing <strong>of</strong>fcampus<br />

research with a mentor during the senior year. This course serves as an<br />

introduction to the mentorship experience in research <strong>and</strong> serves to develop<br />

skills needed for the mentorship. Students learn scientific methodologies,<br />

experimental design, <strong>and</strong> basic data analysis. Technical writing skills are also a<br />

major focus. Throughout the course, students read from the primary scientific<br />

literature <strong>and</strong> participate in discussion groups on current issues in research. As<br />

they explore potential research areas, students begin a portfolio <strong>of</strong> readings<br />

that relate to their particular area <strong>of</strong> mentorship interest. Students assist in the<br />

location <strong>of</strong> a mentor for the senior year.<br />

IE309a/IE309b Introduction to Entrepreneurship<br />

Two trimesters<br />

Credit: Two units core elective credit.<br />

Prerequisite: Permission <strong>of</strong> the Academic Programs Office.<br />

Meeting pattern: One 2-hour evening class meeting.<br />

Students receive a broad underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> entrepreneurship <strong>and</strong> are<br />

introduced to the important tools <strong>and</strong> skills necessary to create <strong>and</strong> grow a<br />

successful new venture. The course simulates the real life activities <strong>of</strong><br />

entrepreneurs in the start-up stage <strong>of</strong> a new venture. Students, in teams,<br />

evaluate a new venture concept <strong>and</strong> determine if a dem<strong>and</strong> exists for their<br />

product or service. Importantly, the course introduces students to successful<br />

entrepreneurs to learn from their process <strong>and</strong> errors as well as their successes.<br />

IE310 World Music<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit core elective credit.<br />
