Meeting pattern: Three periods per week including lab.<br />

These three one-trimester courses constitute a third-year or higher level <strong>of</strong> Latin<br />

study. Emphasis on the grammatical order <strong>of</strong> sentences continues as students<br />

practice scanning, reading poetry aloud, translating, <strong>and</strong> recognizing poetic<br />

figures <strong>of</strong> speech. Students read selections from Ovid’s Metamorphoses <strong>and</strong> the<br />

lyric poetry <strong>of</strong> Catullus <strong>and</strong> Horace. Students also develop a finer sense <strong>of</strong><br />

beauty, a fuller insight into human emotion, <strong>and</strong> a readier sense <strong>of</strong> humor.<br />

Credit: One unit each World Language credit.<br />

Unless exempt, junior students using this sequence to meet the World Language<br />

graduation requirement must complete all three one-trimester courses. Junior<br />

students who have exempted the World Language requirement <strong>and</strong> seniors<br />

taking this for core-elective credit may choose to take only one or two<br />

trimesters, if they wish.<br />

speech. Students read selections from Caesar, Sallust, Cicero, <strong>and</strong> Cato the<br />

Younger. Students also develop a greater awareness <strong>of</strong> ancient history, a<br />

clearer sense <strong>of</strong> persuasive logic, <strong>and</strong> a readier sense <strong>of</strong> drama.<br />

NOTE: The LA404/406/408 sequence <strong>and</strong> the LA410/412/414 sequence are<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered in alternate years. Neither sequence is prerequisite for the other. Junior<br />

students with the requisite ability may take whichever sequence is <strong>of</strong>fered that<br />

year. Then, as seniors, students may take the other sequence, rounding out a<br />

two-year sequence in advanced Latin.<br />
