MS322 Music Theory <strong>and</strong> Composition<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit additional elective credit.<br />

Meeting pattern: Three periods per week.<br />

This course provides an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> classical <strong>and</strong> contemporary trends in<br />

music composition. Students learn fundamental music theory concepts while<br />

utilizing the latest in music notation technology. Students explore songwriting<br />

<strong>and</strong> music composition for various instruments. After developing basic skills <strong>and</strong><br />

concepts, students analyze <strong>and</strong> recognize contemporary trends in music<br />

composition <strong>and</strong> compose <strong>and</strong> arrange their own music.<br />

MS332 Audio Recording Technology<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit additional elective credit.<br />

Meeting pattern: Three periods per week.<br />

This course focuses on “h<strong>and</strong>s-on” discovery <strong>of</strong> concepts in acoustics, creativity,<br />

<strong>and</strong> music production. Topics include: principles <strong>of</strong> acoustics, microphones,<br />

microphone techniques, the recording chain, signal flow, digital recording,<br />

mixing consoles, <strong>and</strong> mixing theory. Each student completes multiple recording<br />

projects during the trimester.<br />

MS334 Digital Music Production<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit additional elective credit.<br />

Meeting pattern: Three periods per week.<br />

This course employs “h<strong>and</strong>s-on” discovery <strong>of</strong> concepts in music production in<br />

the digital realm. Topics include: music production, editing, effects <strong>and</strong><br />

dynamics processing, stereo <strong>and</strong> multi-track editing, step sequencing, looping,<br />

mastering, <strong>and</strong> open source s<strong>of</strong>tware applications. Each student completes<br />

multiple recording sequencing <strong>and</strong> editing projects throughout the trimester.<br />

MS364 Advanced Audio Recording Technology<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit additional elective credit.<br />

Prerequisite: MS332 Audio Recording Technology or MS334 Digital Music<br />

Production.<br />

Meeting pattern: Three periods per week.<br />

This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> MS332 Audio Recording Technology <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

MS334 Digital Music Production. This course includes advanced topics such as<br />
