<strong>COURSE</strong> OFFERINGS: Music<br />

Music Instruction, Theory, <strong>and</strong> Production<br />

MS306, MS308, <strong>and</strong> MS310 Jazz Improvisation<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit each additional elective credit.<br />

Meeting Pattern: Two periods per week plus one 100-minute evening class<br />

meeting.<br />

Jazz Improvisation focuses on the study <strong>of</strong> jazz literature, jazz styles, <strong>and</strong><br />

improvisational skills. This course is a comprehensive study <strong>of</strong> jazz music <strong>and</strong><br />

theory. Largely self-paced, this course provides students the opportunity to learn<br />

jazz literature, theory, <strong>and</strong> performance practice. Students learn jazz technique,<br />

note reading, chords, harmony, rhythm, <strong>and</strong> style. The course includes written<br />

music theory assignments, assigned songs to learn <strong>and</strong> perform for the instructor,<br />

<strong>and</strong> in-class performances with public performances scheduled as appropriate.<br />

Students <strong>of</strong> all levels <strong>and</strong> experience are eligible. Repeatable for credit.<br />

MS312, MS314, MS316 Classical Piano <strong>and</strong> Guitar Theory <strong>and</strong> Practice<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit each additional elective credit.<br />

Meeting pattern: Three periods per week.<br />

This course is a comprehensive study <strong>of</strong> instrumental music <strong>and</strong> theory through<br />

the idioms <strong>of</strong> piano <strong>and</strong> guitar. Largely self-paced, this course provides students<br />

the opportunity to learn the music literature <strong>and</strong> performance practice <strong>of</strong> guitar<br />

or piano. Students learn playing technique, note reading, chords, harmony,<br />

rhythm, <strong>and</strong> pitch. Students may choose guitar or piano as their primary<br />

instrument. The course includes written music theory assignments, assigned<br />

songs to learn <strong>and</strong> perform for the instructor, a trimester examination, <strong>and</strong> inclass<br />

performances. There is no prerequisite for this course. Students <strong>of</strong> all levels<br />

<strong>and</strong> experience are eligible. Repeatable for credit.<br />
