<strong>COURSE</strong> OFFERINGS: English<br />

Graduation requirement in English<br />

All junior students must complete the three-trimester, interdisciplinary AS303<br />

Writing <strong>and</strong> American Studies or AS305 American Studies, or be exempt. All<br />

students must complete an additional two trimesters <strong>of</strong> core English credit.<br />

Students who exempt the American Studies requirement must complete four<br />

units <strong>of</strong> core English credit <strong>and</strong> at least two units <strong>of</strong> history or social science.<br />

AS303a/AS303b/AS303c Writing <strong>and</strong> American Studies<br />

One year<br />

Credit: Two units core English credit, two units core history/social science credit,<br />

two units core elective credit.<br />

Prerequisite: Placement by the Dean <strong>of</strong> Humanities.<br />

Meeting pattern: Five periods per week including lab (trimester 1), four periods<br />

per week including lab (trimesters 2 <strong>and</strong> 3).<br />

Writing <strong>and</strong> American Studies is a team-taught, interdisciplinary course that<br />

teaches students to read, write, <strong>and</strong> think about history, literature, <strong>and</strong> the visual<br />

arts as str<strong>and</strong>s within the cultural fabric <strong>of</strong> the American past. The course begins<br />

with the first European encounters with “new” l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> peoples in the late<br />

fifteenth century. It concludes with the global economies <strong>and</strong> virtual<br />

communities <strong>of</strong> the present. In examining the American experience from<br />

multiple perspectives, students develop a more nuanced sense <strong>of</strong> what<br />

America is <strong>and</strong> what it means to be an American. This course in American<br />

Studies focuses on developing basic skills in reading, writing, <strong>and</strong> interpretation.<br />

Working collaboratively in small groups <strong>and</strong> theirt their teachers, students hone<br />

their skills in reading, in analyzing what they read, <strong>and</strong> in planning, developing,<br />

<strong>and</strong> writing the academic essay with precision, insight, <strong>and</strong> eloquence. Though<br />
