World Language Exemption Guidelines<br />

Students may exempt the World Language requirement only in languages that<br />

are taught at <strong>NCSSM</strong>: Chinese, French, Japanese, Latin, <strong>and</strong> Spanish. Incoming<br />

junior students who wish to exempt must demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in one <strong>of</strong><br />

those languages either through the appropriate <strong>NCSSM</strong> exemption exam or by<br />

submitting an AP score <strong>of</strong> 4 or 5 in that language.<br />

Students who exempt the World Language requirement are not required to take<br />

additional language courses at <strong>NCSSM</strong>. However, since many colleges <strong>and</strong><br />

universities require at least two years <strong>of</strong> formal instruction in a world language,<br />

students who have not had such instruction are encouraged to complete that<br />

instruction at <strong>NCSSM</strong> as part <strong>of</strong> their elective course choices.<br />

<strong>Science</strong> Exemption Guidelines<br />

Students who qualify to exempt one <strong>of</strong> the <strong>NCSSM</strong> science discipline<br />

requirements must still complete six trimester credits <strong>of</strong> laboratory science at<br />

<strong>NCSSM</strong>. Students may earn this credit by completing laboratory science courses<br />

either in the exempted discipline, or in one <strong>of</strong> the other science disciplines.<br />

Biology Exemption Guidelines<br />

Students with a score <strong>of</strong> 4 or 5 on the AP Biology examination may exempt the<br />

<strong>NCSSM</strong> biology graduation requirement by submitting a copy <strong>of</strong> their AP score<br />

report. Students with a 4 or 5 on the AP Environmental <strong>Science</strong> examination<br />

may be approved for a modified exemption <strong>of</strong> the <strong>NCSSM</strong> biology graduation<br />

requirement by submitting a copy <strong>of</strong> their AP score report. Such students are<br />

required to complete one unit <strong>of</strong> <strong>NCSSM</strong> biology instead <strong>of</strong> two.<br />

Students who have not taken the AP Biology or the AP Environmental <strong>Science</strong><br />

examination, but who believe their mastery <strong>of</strong> the subject may qualify them for<br />

exemption may sit for the <strong>NCSSM</strong> biology exemption examination given during<br />

Orientation in August. The student may exempt the requirement by scoring<br />

above a cut<strong>of</strong>f established for exemption.<br />

Chemistry Exemption Guidelines<br />

Students with a score <strong>of</strong> 5 on the AP Chemistry examination may exempt the<br />

<strong>NCSSM</strong> chemistry graduation requirement by submitting a copy <strong>of</strong> their AP score<br />

report.<br />

Students with a score <strong>of</strong> 4 on the AP Chemistry examination may be approved<br />

for a modified exemption <strong>of</strong> the <strong>NCSSM</strong> chemistry graduation requirement.<br />

Such students are permitted to take chemistry electives to fulfill their <strong>NCSSM</strong><br />

chemistry graduation requirement by submitting a copy <strong>of</strong> their AP score report.<br />
