This course is designed for students who are ready to get in shape. The focus is<br />

on cardio strength as well as overall body toning. Students are expected to be<br />

able to run a 5K by the end <strong>of</strong> the trimester. Students meet in class weekly for 90<br />

minutes <strong>and</strong> are expected to participate in two additional weekly exercise<br />

sessions beyond the class meeting to comply with the Surgeon General’s<br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> three moderate exercise sessions weekly.<br />

PA160 Sports Medicine I<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit additional elective credit.<br />

Meeting pattern: One period per week including lab.<br />

This course is designed to introduce the field <strong>of</strong> athletic training to the high<br />

school student. Topics <strong>of</strong> study include basic anatomy/physiology, athletic<br />

training skills, <strong>and</strong> the recognition, management, <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> common<br />

athletic injuries.<br />

PA162 Sports Medicine II<br />

One trimester<br />

Credit: One unit additional elective credit.<br />

Prerequisite: PA160 Sports Medicine I.<br />

Meeting pattern: One period per week including lab.<br />

This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> PA160 Sports Medicine I <strong>and</strong> is designed for<br />

students who are contemplating a career in medicine. Topics include an indepth<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the prevention, recognition, management, <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation <strong>of</strong><br />

common athletic injuries.<br />

Graduation Requirement in Student Life<br />

All students must meet the SSL105 Summer Service Learning requirements before<br />

the start <strong>of</strong> their senior year at <strong>NCSSM</strong>. All junior students are required to<br />

successfully complete SL101Junior Student Life Curriculum <strong>and</strong> senior students<br />

must successfully complete SL201 Senior Student Life Curriculum. Also, all<br />

students must successfully complete two years <strong>of</strong> WS105 Work Service. These<br />

courses are all graded Satisfactory/ Unsatisfactory (S/U) <strong>and</strong> do not compute in<br />

the GPA.<br />

SSL105 Summer Service Learning<br />

Credit: Service Learning graduation credit.<br />

60 hours in summer between junior <strong>and</strong> senior year or in summer prior to first<br />

enrollment at <strong>NCSSM</strong>.<br />

This experience introduces students to service learning. Students work for a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

organization in their home community. Students maintain a daily journal <strong>of</strong><br />
