A writing course focused through the specific lens <strong>of</strong> ecocriticism while learning<br />

the literary conventions, structures, <strong>and</strong> elements necessary to evaluate any<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> prose, we focus on how authors have addressed the physicality <strong>of</strong> the<br />

natural world including the way we encounter <strong>and</strong> describe the “otherness” <strong>of</strong><br />

nature, the evolution <strong>of</strong> our underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> our environment, <strong>and</strong> the effect <strong>of</strong><br />

that development on our underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> ourselves, the issues resulting in<br />

irresponsible interactions with the environment, <strong>and</strong> how these global ideas<br />

IE380 Bioinformatics (Computational Biology)<br />

Computational biology – known also as “bioinformatics” – is a hybrid,<br />

interdisciplinary course, <strong>and</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> the most important new fields <strong>of</strong> study in<br />

science. Computational biology is not a biology course pre se – it is the<br />

application <strong>of</strong> computing <strong>and</strong> mathematics (primarily statistics) to biological<br />

data. What is biological data? Mostly genetics <strong>and</strong> genomics data, such as<br />

studies <strong>of</strong> DNA extracted from mice breeding experiments to predict the gentic<br />

basis <strong>of</strong> diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure, <strong>and</strong> obesity. Successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> this course can open opportunities for research at the<br />
