Off road bicyclists from<br />
across the country will<br />
converge on Telemark<br />
Resort in Cable for the running<br />
<strong>of</strong> the 28th Annual<br />
Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival<br />
on September 17-19, <strong>2010</strong>. A<br />
sold out field <strong>of</strong> 2,500 riders will<br />
test muscles, minds and pedalpowered<br />
machines in the<br />
nation’s largest mass start pointto-point<br />
<strong>of</strong>f road bicycle event.<br />
The festival’s main event, the<br />
Chequamegon 40, is set for<br />
Saturday when 1,700 riders will<br />
start, en masse, from Hayward’s<br />
Main Street at 10am; a spectacle<br />

not to be missed. A few elite riders<br />
will compete for the championship,<br />
but most <strong>of</strong> the field will<br />
be citizen-class athletes in it for<br />
the adventure and personal challenge<br />
inherent in this 40-mile <strong>of</strong>f<br />
road journey.<br />
The Short & Fat, a simultaneous<br />
16-mile companion event,<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers an additional 800 cyclists a<br />
shorter but challenging backwoods’<br />
cycling opportunity.<br />
This rolling mass <strong>of</strong> cyclists will<br />
launch from Randysek Road in<br />
Cable, Saturday at 10am. Both<br />
events head cross-county utilizing<br />
a twisting maze <strong>of</strong> wooded<br />
trails to arrive at the Telemark<br />
Resort finish line in Cable. Both<br />
events feature a Children’s<br />
Bicycle Parade before the start<br />
<strong>of</strong> each race.<br />
The entire Chequamegon<br />
weekend is filled with activities<br />
that the whole family will enjoy.<br />
Friday <strong>of</strong>fers warm-up events, a<br />
pasta feast, and product displays.<br />
Sunday <strong>of</strong>fers several<br />
lighter, fun events after<br />
Saturday’s serious day <strong>of</strong> racing.<br />
The Rough Stuff Poker Ride<br />
starts at 9am with several hundred<br />
pedaling up and down the<br />
hills <strong>of</strong> Telemark Resort in a bicycle<br />
orienteering race. Riders can<br />
compete for top times in the<br />
Timed Competition category or<br />
for best hands in the Poker Ride<br />
format.<br />
Sunday also features spectator-friendly<br />
lap races. Beginning<br />
at 10am, the Cable Crit-Cross<br />
will feature two-person, two-lap<br />
qualifying heats. Riders will<br />
negotiate a short, closed course<br />
that contains cyclocross features<br />
including new hand-built singletrack,<br />
several dismount and run<br />
sections, and a ramp-platformsteps<br />
obstacle all located on the<br />
Telemark ski hill.<br />
With a combination <strong>of</strong> fat<br />
tires, friends, family and fun it’s<br />
not just a race, it’s a really great<br />
