Off road bicyclists from
across the country will
converge on Telemark
Resort in Cable for the running
of the 28th Annual
Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival
on September 17-19, 2010. A
sold out field of 2,500 riders will
test muscles, minds and pedalpowered
machines in the
nation’s largest mass start pointto-point
off road bicycle event.
The festival’s main event, the
Chequamegon 40, is set for
Saturday when 1,700 riders will
start, en masse, from Hayward’s
Main Street at 10am; a spectacle

not to be missed. A few elite riders
will compete for the championship,
but most of the field will
be citizen-class athletes in it for
the adventure and personal challenge
inherent in this 40-mile off
road journey.
The Short & Fat, a simultaneous
16-mile companion event,
offers an additional 800 cyclists a
shorter but challenging backwoods’
cycling opportunity.
This rolling mass of cyclists will
launch from Randysek Road in
Cable, Saturday at 10am. Both
events head cross-county utilizing
a twisting maze of wooded
trails to arrive at the Telemark
Resort finish line in Cable. Both
events feature a Children’s
Bicycle Parade before the start
of each race.
The entire Chequamegon
weekend is filled with activities
that the whole family will enjoy.
Friday offers warm-up events, a
pasta feast, and product displays.
Sunday offers several
lighter, fun events after
Saturday’s serious day of racing.
The Rough Stuff Poker Ride
starts at 9am with several hundred
pedaling up and down the
hills of Telemark Resort in a bicycle
orienteering race. Riders can
compete for top times in the
Timed Competition category or
for best hands in the Poker Ride
format.
Sunday also features spectator-friendly
lap races. Beginning
at 10am, the Cable Crit-Cross
will feature two-person, two-lap
qualifying heats. Riders will
negotiate a short, closed course
that contains cyclocross features
including new hand-built singletrack,
several dismount and run
sections, and a ramp-platformsteps
obstacle all located on the
Telemark ski hill.
