4 Fly Fishing Tails is a first of its kind in South Africa. A truly digital only magazine with a free distribution to all who want it. It is not a website, but rather a digital representation of a print magazine, with the added features and associated benefits that the digital platform brings. WELCOME So as usual mother nature is up to the usual…a bit of warmer weather to get us all dropping our guard and then BAM, cold snap. Only difference is that this year she delivered her usual bitchy bout with a sprinkling of the white stuff. I remember seeing a Leon Schuster movie years ago called “Oh, Shucks here comes UNTAG”. In the film, one of the characters from overseas asks a local SA boer “when does it snows in this place?” To which the prompt reply was “When Transvaal win the curry cup!” Well I can tell you that at the time of Johannesburg’s first snow in some 31 years, the Lions (Transvaal) are in fact the reigning curry cup champions. Maybe Leon knows more than we do with his Nostradamuslike prediction all those years ago, but I can tell you something I know now…summer IS here. Albeit with a bit of a bite in the air, and yes probably a bitch, I mean cold slap to come, but as far as I’m concerned it is here. Well that’s my story an I’m sticking to it… On the fishing front if you are yet to get down to the Vaal or any other yellowfish destination, then get your plans in place cos now is the time before it gets too hot. Cheers The content of the magazine is tailored to bring something to everyone. All the current offerings in the market place have lost site of the importance of the novice fly fisher, and content to a large degree is catering only to those that know the game inside and out. We at Fly Fishing Tails believe in catering to all and as such, whether you are a beginner with only a hand full of flies in his or her box, or a seasoned vet with a photo album full of 6 pounders, Fly Fishing Tails will have something for you. Fly Fishing Tails is a monthly magazine and we urge you to send it on to fellow fly fishermen all over the globe. 5 AUGUST IN KOSI BAY – NIGHT FLY FISHING EXPERIENCE By Brandon Stonefield Sunset at Kosi Bay Mouth Estuary With a long cold winter, a group of 8 guys (Brandon, Steve, Andre, Warren, Danie, Ryan, Alwyn and Koos) decided to head for some warmer climates and Kosi mouth was the decided destination in search of the elusive GT’s that basically hang around all year round from the 9th to the 12th of August. We would camp at Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp (www.kosimouth. co.za). It was my birthday the Sunday and I was given the green light from the wife to do a trip like this with the boys. With only four days to work with, we decided to leave Johannesburg before midnight on the 8th and get there first light and at least have a good days fishing upon arrival. We did bring a boat with us to try the salt and saline lakes as an alternate option as opposed to fishing out at sea, weather dependant. But the main aim was to fish the mouth and estuary area (accessible with 4x4 or 2x4 diff lock through the mouth reserve gate), along with the 4x4 only road to Rocktail Bay. A waning moon phase was present, not greatly ideal for the salt but could still produce fish. Weather and tide info printed out, as signal is very weak in the area for current updates. Tides and weather all looked very promising after the nationwide cold front that just passed and we all eagerly headed to the beach for some anticipated action! Fishing at the mouth on the Thursday was very quiet but was expected as the front had only just passed and the water was fairly cold and we did not fish that evening as we needed to acquire a night fishing permit. The following day (Friday) was almost perfect, weather wise and we all jumped into
