Position in <strong>Sprint</strong> Pathway Description<br />
The <strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>WA</strong> <strong>Development</strong> squad coach is a new position within the pathway that has<br />
been created within <strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>WA</strong> in conjunction with <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Canoeing</strong>, National Elite<br />
<strong>Development</strong> Program (NEDP) and <strong>WA</strong>IS.<br />
The successful applicant will be required to provide technical leadership and coaching for all<br />
aspects of <strong>WA</strong>’s potential National Elite <strong>Development</strong> Squad, these athletes are aged 14 – 23<br />
years of age and that have progressed through the Canoe <strong>Sprint</strong> pathway, or transitioning<br />
from surf lifesaving, surf ski at State level.<br />
The role includes but is not limited to athlete recruitment, development, athlete performance<br />
tracking and monitoring. This is to be done in line with the National Elite <strong>Development</strong><br />
program protocols and <strong>WA</strong>IS standards for data collection and analysis.
Working in collaboration with the <strong>WA</strong> National Elite <strong>Development</strong> <strong>Coach</strong> and National<br />
Manager, <strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>WA</strong>, Western <strong>Australian</strong> Institute of Sport (<strong>WA</strong>IS) and Surf Lifesaving<br />
<strong>WA</strong> the position aims to increase the number and quality of <strong>WA</strong> athletes entering into the<br />
National Elite <strong>Development</strong> Program <strong>Coach</strong> squad. While meeting the needs of key<br />
stakeholders (<strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>WA</strong>, <strong>WA</strong>IS, and Surf Life Saving <strong>WA</strong>) and enhancing international<br />
performances of <strong>Australian</strong> junior and senior teams.<br />
Key roles and responsibilities include:<br />
• Work in partnership with the National Elite <strong>Development</strong> Program <strong>Coach</strong>, <strong>Canoeing</strong><br />
<strong>WA</strong>, SLSA Next Wave, and <strong>WA</strong>IS to foster and feed athletes with talent into the high<br />
performance Canoe <strong>Sprint</strong> system (ultimate goal <strong>WA</strong>IS).<br />
• Assist in the implementation of strength, power, flexibility and fitness programs as<br />
developed by the <strong>WA</strong> NEDP coach which better prepare athletes for competitive<br />
kayak or surf ski paddling.<br />
• Support the development of talent identification programs and National Elite<br />
<strong>Development</strong> athletes.<br />
• Manage your financial position; the daily operations of athlete’s fees including<br />
budgeting, database maintenance, and performance reporting.<br />
• Liaise with the key partners (Surf Clubs and Canoe Clubs) to create or strengthen<br />
viable, integrated, athlete development pathways. Ultimately this will lead to<br />
international success in Canoe <strong>Sprint</strong>.<br />
• Establish partnerships with surf clubs, schools and club programs in <strong>WA</strong> to ensure the<br />
highest quality athletes are identified, recruited, retained and developed to the best of<br />
their ability.<br />
• Work with the National Elite <strong>Development</strong> <strong>Coach</strong> to collaborate with Surf Life<br />
Saving Clubs <strong>WA</strong> and coaches to create a partnership with reciprocal benefits for<br />
<strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>WA</strong>. This relationship is aimed at identifying and developing surf athletes<br />
with the potential to succeed at the international level in sprint canoeing.<br />
• Provide ongoing support for athletes transitioning between squads within the sprint<br />
pathway.<br />
• Support regional camps and guidance of coaches and athletes.<br />
• Support regular surf clinics in line with SLSA Next Wave Programs expectations and<br />
be prepared to assist at up skilling workshops for identified surf lifesaving coaches.<br />
• Attend any workshops, seminars, lectures associated with increasing your knowledge<br />
and skills as directed by National Elite <strong>Development</strong> Program <strong>Coach</strong> and Executive<br />
Officer, <strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>WA</strong>.
Issues and Challenges<br />
• Provide regular updates to NEDP, <strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>WA</strong> and <strong>WA</strong>IS.<br />
• Deliver acceptable athlete transition to NEDP.<br />
• Team player operating in stressful environments.<br />
• Communication in a complex and challenging network.<br />
• Provide coaching, direction, and integration to ensure all athletes and partners work<br />
together effectively to achieve KPI’s.<br />
• Create and maintain a quality daily training environment (DTE) for NEDP athletes.<br />
• Work irregular hours, including weekends.<br />
• Travel interstate as required. With potential overseas trips with teams (Professional<br />
<strong>Development</strong>).<br />
Jobholder requirements<br />
• Proven track record in sports management, sports science or sports coaching/teaching.<br />
• Minimum coach accreditation; level 1 Canoe <strong>Sprint</strong> (essential). If you do not<br />
currently have this qualification, however are experienced and very eager to complete<br />
it then please contact <strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>WA</strong> Executive Officer.<br />
• Desirable accreditations; level 1 Surf <strong>Coach</strong> and <strong>Australian</strong> Strength and Conditioning<br />
Association (ASCA) Level 1 accreditation (preferred).<br />
• A thorough understanding of pre-elite and high performance sport requirements in<br />
order for athletes to succeed at the highest level.<br />
• Excellent knowledge of the processes of talent detection, selection and transfer.<br />
• Understanding or willing to, the <strong>Australian</strong> sports system and the organisational<br />
structures within, in particular AC and SLSA.<br />
• Ability to organise training camps, workshops and events.<br />
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.<br />
• Ability to work as a part of a team, although operating your own coaching business,<br />
demonstrating initiative and drive.<br />
• Ability to liaise with a cross section of partners including coaches, athletes, parents,<br />
peers, surf clubs, canoe clubs, sponsors, government bodies and media.<br />
• Competent computer skills.
