Klein Independent School District
2010-2011 Annual Performance Report
Superintendent’s Message
Dear Klein Community,
Reflecting back on the 2010-2011 school year, the
Klein ISD has much to be proud of as our teachers and
students continued to excel both academically and in
extracurricular activities. Klein ISD earned a Recognized
rating from the state for the third consecutive year for our
students' performances on the TAKS test. Many athletic
teams advanced in playoffs, with the Klein High baseball
team making it to the state semifinals after an all Klein ISD
regional championship with Klein Oak. Several Destination
ImagiNation teams travelled to Knoxville, Tenn., for the
DI Global Finals in May. And, the list goes on much farther.
Klein ISD faced a difficult challenge in the spring as the
Texas state legislature proposed large cuts to education.
Klein ISD, already a lean district, was forced to brace for
millions in cuts. This unfortunately meant reductions in
some of our staffing. With more than 46,000 students
this school year, we are doing more with less, just like the
families in our district. We will continue to offer the quality
education and services you expect.
All we accomplish would not be possible without our
outstanding employees, involved parents, and supportive
community. Thank you for everything you do to continue
to make Klein a great place to live, work and have your
children go to school.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Cain
Klein ISD Superintendent
Matters
At the end of the 2011 Special Session, the Texas Legislature’s approved
budget included a $5 billion reduction in funding for public education.
This translated into a loss of general fund revenue of $16.2 million for
Klein ISD. As a result, KISD reduced campus and department budgets
by five percent and eliminated more than 330 positions, two-thirds of
which were through retirement and resignations.
With a one-time infusion of federal support from the Education Jobs
fund and the Board approving the use of $3 million of the district’s
fund balance, the district was able to hire more than 175 teachers in
critical needs areas to help keep our class sizes down as enrollment
continues to increase.
continues to encourage employees to
take care of their health with challenges
and activities that foster healthy living.
During the 2010-2011 school year, almost 4,000 Klein ISD employees
completed one or more kleinwell challenges. During the “Walktober
Challenge”, more than 2,500 KISD employees walked their way to better
health and learned to incorporate walking into their daily routines.
The kleinwell “Maintain Don’t Gain Holiday Challenge” encouraged
employees to break the holiday weight gain cycle. Throughout the
challenge, the district provided employees with nutritional information
and suggestions for healthy eating. More than 2,000 Klein employees
participated in the holiday challenge, losing nearly 4,000 pounds.
Capturing
Kids’ Hearts
With help from the Klein ISD
Education Foundation, 300
intermediate teachers participated
in the three-day Capturing Kids’
Hearts TM seminar. The training
provided tools for administrators,
faculty and staff to build
positive, productive, and trusting
relationships among themselves
and with their students.
Klein ISD takes bullying seriously, and all staff are trained in bullying
prevention. The district has 37 of its 39 schools designated as Anti-Defamation
League (ADL) No Place for Hate campuses. No Place for Hate was designed to
empower the whole school community – teachers, students, administrators
and parents – to tackle prejudice, bullying and intergroup conflict.
Last year, Schindewolf teacher Judy Linville became the fifth Klein ISD teacher
in four years to win the Walter Kase Teacher Excellence Award for being a
catalyst on her campus to eliminate hate and encourage unity, respect, and
acceptance. The Walter Kase award is named for Houstonian Walter Kase who
is a Holocaust survivor.
Matters Your
The district continues to grow with new homes and additional students despite the
economic downturn. The district constantly monitors enrollment data and housing
developments within the district.
During the last school year, the district underwent two rezoning efforts. In August 2010,
we considered new elementary school boundaries due to the opening of Blackshear
Elementary. Additionally, the district determined that Klein Oak would need relief due to
overcapacity by the fall of 2012. The district rezoned some of the current Klein Oak areas
to Klein High and Klein Collins effective for the 2012–2013 school year.
The district welcomes community input when planning new attendance zones.
The attendance zone committee includes parents, community members, teachers,
principals, central office and administrative staff. Community members can find zoning
information at www.kleinisd.net.
Funds at Work
Klein continues work on projects
approved in the 2008 bond to address
growth in the district. The 2010-2011
school year was no exception with
Ulrich Intermediate opening, Blackshear
Elementary under construction, an
addition at Klein Forest, and the start of
the Klein High rebuild.
Ulrich opened in August 2010 and
brings the total number of intermediate
campuses in the Klein ISD to nine.
Last year, work was just beginning on
Zwink Elementary which is located
off Spring Stuebner near Rothwood.
The design of this campus is the new
elementary prototype. This is the first
school in Klein ISD that is designed
from the beginning as a Collaborative
for High Performance Schools (CHPS)
Verified school. The campus will open in
August 2012.
Construction also began last year on
the Grace England Early Childhood/
Pre-Kindergarten Center and the
Multipurpose Center. The Multipurpose
Center will house staff development and
educational technology facilities, a large
meeting space with a capacity of 600, an
auction arena and holding pens for the
district’s agricultural program, and offices
and a test kitchen for the food service
department. An adjacent building will
contain the plant operations department
and custodial products warehouse.
Klein ISD volunteers play a vital role in the
daily activities at our schools. Volunteers
are parents, grandparents, community
businesses, and other dedicated individuals
who generously give their time to support
teachers and enrich educational experiences.
During 2010–2011, nearly 2,000 volunteers
logged 129,544 hours and helped more than 45,000 students. Volunteers can serve as tutors, give
presentations, read to students, mentor, or assist with clerical duties in school clinics, libraries, and
offices. At the Wunderlich Farm, volunteers are docents who share our community’s history.
The mentor program requires only one hour a week and a desire to make a difference. Last year,
approximately 70 mentors participated in the program. Learn how to get involved at www.kleinisd.net.
The Unite for Understanding Council
earned the ADL’s Community of Respect
for the second year. Klein ISD is the
only school district in the Houston area
to receive this designation. The Unite
Council is a group of adults from the community and district who
promote activities that reduce prejudice and build appreciation of
diversity in Klein. Activities last year included a taped presentation
of Holocaust survivor Walter Kase given to intermediate schools
to use in the classroom, a We are Klein diversity video, and the
Diversity Art Contest. Students from each campus submitted
artwork, and Unite members voted on winning pieces to go
on a t-shirt and in an academic calendar.
