The Perfect Cosmetic Surgery Procedure Can Help Create The Perfect You
by Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D.
Now is the best time to schedule that cosmetic surgery procedure that
you deserve. The warm weather is here and bathing suits and shorts
are part of our wardrobe. Why not look the best you can now and be
able to flaunt that new body? We all know that those summer fashions
can look even better with a slimmer look, a younger appearance or a
body contoured to show off those curves. If you feel that you want to
look better, slimmer and younger, consider the cosmetic surgery
procedure that will allow you to achieve the
look you desire. Whether opting for a surgical or non-surgical
procedure, the result can be a beautiful and natural look.
Consider breast augmentation or breast lift to help improve your look
and turn some heads at the pool or on the beach this summer!
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery
procedures and women report an increase in self confidence
following the procedure as they feel younger and more attractive.
You will see an impressive change, especially if you have had children and would like to
restore a more youthful contour.
Liposuction is a perfect solution for those who would like to reshape specific areas of their
bodies. Some people just can not lose fat in those areas no matter how much they diet or
exercise, making this the perfect procedure. Recommended for both men and women who
are looking to eliminate those bothersome areas, liposuction is often focused on thighs,
hips, abdomen, back and upper arms. Many men have eliminated those ‘love handles’ and
can now feel better about showing off their slimmer bodies! Consider SmartLipo MPX and
Zerona TM in combination or alone, to melt away excess fat and inches quickly, efficiently,
and with little pain.
Good Advice
Be proud of your body this
summer. Now is the time to have
that cosmetic surgery procedure
that will have you looking as hot
as the weather.
advertisement
The popularity of aesthetic services continues to grow as more and more people are taking
advantage of the new options available to reduce lines and wrinkles without surgery.
Exciting new products including Dysport, a wrinkle relaxer, and injectables such as Restylane ®
containing lidocaine, have expanded the market and increased the options available to
those seeking immediate results with significant reductions in facial lines and wrinkles. If
cosmetic surgery is not the best plan for you at this time, there are alternatives available.
The combination of the “Liquid Facelift” of injectable products, such as Restylane ® ,
Botox ® Cosmetic or Juvéderm, coupled with micro-dermabrasion,
PhotoRejuvenation, peels and laser hair removal, will dramatically
improve your appearance. Another simple way to help improve your
appearance and reduce the signs of aging is to use the revolutionary
skin care system, Cosmetic Surgeon in a Jar TM . These products are
specifically designed to reverse sun and free radical damage, enhance
elasticity and produce a younger look and a reduction in fine lines and
wrinkles.
Remember it is the combination of surgery and healthy living that will keep you in your best
possible shape and the proper mix of procedures that guarantees a successful improvement
in appearance. What better time than now to get back into your ideal summer shape?
Dr. Stephen Greenberg is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic surgery. He is
Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that
can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can
grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A
woman’s breast can actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the
breast appearing “deflated”.
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with
the post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin
and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can protrude
Good Advice
Many of my patients
who have breast
surgery also have other
procedures performed at
the same time. This
allows for one surgery
and one recovery
advertisement
and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can
be so weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite
daily workouts including sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed
to restore these muscles.
Breast Reduction
Women with very large pendulous breasts may experience varied medical
problems including back and neck pain. Also, the weight of large breasts can
cause the bra straps to dig into the shoulders leaving groove markings. Large
breasts get in the way of physical activities such as running, making exercise
and weight loss very difficult if not impossible. Breast reduction (reduction
mammaplasty), is a surgical procedure which makes breasts smaller.
There are many different breast reduction techniques. The more traditional method (inverted T-
scar) leaves the breasts with a vertical, long horizontal scar (along the breast crease). “I utilize the
Lejour technique, which leaves the breast with a single vertical incision (lollipop scar) and, in my
opinion, with a rounder more natural appearing breast and a better cosmetic result.” Breast reductions
are performed as an outpatient procedure and are covered by insurance.
Breast Augmentation
Women who come to me seeking breast enlargement have very similar goals to those seeking
breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast
lift is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a
breast reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures
performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast
reduction or augmentation, combined with tummy tuck, also known as
abdominoplasty. For those patients who desire breast augmentation together
with a tummy tuck, I am able to place the breast implants through the
tummy tuck incision, leaving the breasts without any scars.
Liposuction is also commonly performed at the same time. Despite diet and
exercise, certain areas of the body are prone to carry excess fat. For these
areas, liposuction can help. The most common areas for liposuction are the
love handles (upper hip area) and thighs.
Patients who have combined procedures do surprisingly well. In addition to
having the benefit of just one recovery process, there can also be a significant
savings in price.
To learn more, please call our Huntington office to schedule a complimentary consultation
with Dr. Rhee at (631) 424-6707. Located at 33 Walt Whitman Rd., Suite 228, Huntington.
Meet This
Long Island Woman
Diana Cherryholmes
Executive Director, Huntington Arts Council
How long have you lived on Long Island? What do you
like best about living here?
I moved to Long Island from St. Louis 14 years ago. There
are so many things to love about Long Island, including my
immediate community of Huntington, the kindness of
Long Islanders, the ocean and the small villages. I love the
arts, and we have so many options on Long Island: world
class museums, resident artists, outdoor art fairs and, of
course, live music.
How long have you worked for the Huntington Arts
Council?
I started out as the Council's program director and then
became Executive Director in 2000. I love the variety of my
job. One day I’ll be exhibit loading into one of our two galleries,
another day working on programming the
Huntington Summer Arts Festival, another day advising
artists when they come to visit us at the Arts Council.
Tell me a little about the mission and programs of HAC.
The Huntington Arts Council enriches the quality of life
of Long Islanders with programs and services that address
the needs and interests of artists, cultural organizations
and the community. Our programs serve more than one
million Long Islanders each year.
Tell me about your Summer Arts Festival?
This summer is the 45th season! The Festival began on
the steps of Heckscher Museum, and I’m told that audience
members would light up the stage with their car
headlights. This summer, we plan to entertain and educate
more than 50,000 individuals with music from the Jimmy
Heath Quartet, GE Smith, Raul Midon, Jen Chapin, and the
Long Island Philharmonic, to name just a few artists. All
the concerts are free. It’s going to be a fantastic summer!
For more information, visit huntingtonarts.org.
you’re an opera aficionado or if you’ve never
seen an opera in your life, experiencing the
stunning Met productions is truly spectacular.
Close-up camera shots, backstage interviews
with performers, directors, conductors, and
other artistic personnel during intermissions,
and tickets that cost only $20 make this a
truly unique experience. You can even feast
on popcorn while watching the performance!
This summer, the Met will feature encore
performances at movie theaters in Westbury,
Farmingdale, and Port Washington, including
Aida on Wednesday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m.,
Carmen on Wednesday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m.,
PLASTIC SURGEONS
Comprehensive Solutions for Breast Restoration after Cancer Treatment
by Dr. Stephen U. Harris M.D., FACS
Reconstruction of a breast that has been removed due to cancer or the
risk of cancer, or that has been deformed by treatment of a previous
breast cancer (such as lumpectomy and radiation) is one of the most
rewarding surgical procedures available today. New surgical techniques
and devices have made it possible to create a breast that can come close
in form and appearance to matching a natural breast.
Along with the most common indication, the reconstruction of a breast
immediately after mastectomy, surgical techniques are available to correct a deformity related
to breast conservation therapy or postoperative radiation, improve the results
of an unsatisfactory breast reconstruction, salvage a failed breast reconstruction,
or create a breast in a delayed fashion months or years after mastectomy.
Some women choose either immediate or delayed breast reconstruction following
mastectomy. Sometimes the result is less than expected, with asymmetry,
poor breast shape, implant firmness or contracture, implant deformity, poor
nipple projection, or poor areola definition. Rarely, the chosen reconstructive
techniques fail completely. While the patients’ anatomy often limits the degree
of symmetry, women need to be aware that additional surgery may significantly
improve the result, providing a significant boost of self-esteem. Evaluation and treatment to
improve results can be done months or even years after the primary reconstructive surgery.
One of the newer advances in reconstructive surgery after breast cancer treatment involves
fat grafting. In this procedure, fat is removed from donor areas of the body, such as the
abdomen, flanks, hips, or thighs, and grafted into the breast. The most common indication
for this procedure is to soften the interface between an implant used for breast reconstruction
and the surrounding soft tissues. Fat can also be added to a tissue-based reconstruction to
soften contours or to enlarge the breast mound.
State and Federal law mandate that reconstructive breast surgery for correction of deformity or
asymmetry after breast cancer surgery be covered by health insurance plans.
With the introduction of genetic testing for mutations in the BRCA gene, many women with
strong family history of breast cancer or women who have developed breast cancer at a relatively
young age, can be tested to determine if a known genetic mutation may explain the
clinical situation. Since the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer in women with BRCA
mutations is much higher than the average woman, risk-reducing surgery to remove the
breasts prophylactically (to prevent cancer) is often performed. Primary consultation
with a board certified plastic surgeon with expertise in breast reconstructive
techniques is important to allow women to understand the level of
cosmetic outcomes achievable in each case. Comprehensive multidisciplinary
care (including discussion with a gynecologist regarding management of the
ovaries) allows women with a BRCA mutation to make informed decisions
regarding her options.
The right reconstructive choice is based on the individual patients’ anatomy,
the individual patients’ expectations, and a customized evaluation of the
risks and benefits of each procedure. At Harris Plastic Surgery, our staff strives to provide
expert and compassionate care to women considering the many options for reconstruction
after mastectomy, patients who have had breast reconstruction in the past with unsatisfactory
results, or women with BRCA mutations who are considering risk reduction prophylactic
bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction. I invite you to read my blog, Building Breasts, at
Good Advice
The Latest Advance In Facial Plastic Surgery: Microfat Transfer
by James C. Marotta, MD
In the past 15 years there has been a veritable revolution in the way that
facial plastic surgeons think about facial aging. We used to think that facial
aging was only about sagging tissues and gravity, but in reality that’s only
half the problem. The other major contributor to looking old is the loss of
facial fat.
FACIAL AGING - LOSING FACIAL FAT
Unlike other parts of the body which seem to get heavier as we age, the face actually loses
fat in its natural “fat pads.” Think about the face of a baby versus that
of a 90 year old. The baby’s face is pleasingly plump and cherubic. It
has “baby fat. ”The 90 year old’s face, on the other hand, is characteristically
drawn and gaunt. Some elderly faces appear skeleton-like,
with loss of fat in the temples, under the eyes, and in the cheeks. An
excellent analogy I’ve heard is that when we’re born, we’re like
grapes, with nice taught skin around a full center. But as we age, we
lose our “stuffing” and turn into shriveled raisins.
Though the process of losing facial fat is gradual and slow, it
unfortunately starts very early - beginning in the mid to late 20s and continuing throughout
life. I commonly see patients in their late 20s/early 30s who complain of looking tired
or of “dark” circles under their eyes. These patients are noticing the very early changes in
facial fat. It begins with loss of fat volume around the eyes in the 20s, progressing to the
cheeks in the 30s - 50s, and finally to the brows and temples typically after 50.
SOLVING THE PROBLEM – RESTORING VOLUME
You may think, “If facial aging is about losing fat in our facial fat pads, why not add the
“The ability to restore lost volume
to the face with Microfat transfer
is arguably the greatest advance
in facial plastic surgery in 15
years.”
fat back?” That’s exactly what we do through a procedure called Facial Microfat
Transfer. In this procedure, fat is gently liposuctioned through a small needle hole, typically
from the abdomen but possibly also the inner or outer thighs. The fat is processed
to increase its survival and is made to function essentially as a transplant of tiny (micro)
fat droplets. The fat is then injected into the face to refill the natural fat pads under the
eyes and in the cheeks, brows, and temples. It can also be used to fill in smile lines and
help a sagging jawline. Fat is injected wherever needed to help reverse the process of
facial aging. The ability to restore lost volume to the face with
Microfat Transfer is arguably the greatest advance in facial plastic
surgery in 15 years.
Interested, but you still have some questions? Here are answers
to the most common questions I get about Microfat Transfers:
1. Will I have a “fat” face? No just enough fat is injected to restore
the amount you lost in the aging process.
2. Does it last? Microfat Transfer, when done utilizing the latest
techniques, lasts for years just like other facial surgery.
3. Is it smooth? Yes. The droplets of fat are tiny (“micro”) and, when injected, are
smooth and undetectable.
4. Does that mean I won’t need an eye, face, cheek or brow lift? That depends on the
patient. Some patient’s facial aging can be improved with fat injections alone. When necessary,
lifting procedures can be combined with fat injections to achieve even better
results because both the loss of facial fat and sagging that cause facial aging are
improved.
Style
by Danielle Sullivan
Swimwear
Flattering Styles for Every Shape
Shopping for swimwear can be an unwanted rite of passage when the
seasons change. Let’s face it; many of today’s suits are created for a teenage
body, so having a real woman go out and make their way through the
countless racks of tiny two pieces is not high on any woman’s priority list.
Still, searching for the perfect summer suit doesn’t have to be an awful experience.
Once you learn about your specific body type and what works best
for you regarding color and style, you can turn the dreaded bathing suit
shopping excursion into an uplifting experience – literally and figuratively.
Stylist expert and author of new book How to Never Look Fat
Again, Charla Krupp, says that, while shopping for
a swimsuit has personally been a humiliating
experience for many summers, she
believes that you simply cannot buy a suit
without trying it on. “If you have less than
a model body, taking a chance on a suit
without trying it on is a big mistake.” Krupp
says that shape wear swimwear is the way
to go. “The
new kid on
the block is
Spanx. If you
want to look
slimmer at the
beach or the
pool without sacrificing
an ounce of
chic, these suits are for
you. They compress just like
their beloved shape wear but
look cool, and are on trend and in fashion colors.”
Tankini separates
are the biggest
selling type of
suit of the
season.
Proper Fit
Janice Mann, manager of Swimmer’s Choice in
Syosset, says that a common mistake women make
is getting a suit that is not tight fitting enough.
“The tighter the fit, the longer it will last … if it’s
too loose, the suit will fill up with water, stretch
out faster and lose its shape.” She suggests a simple
way to find proper fit. “A good guideline is to
pull the shoulder straps up and see that they go no
higher than the bottom of your ear, or else it’s too
big.”
Are You Wearing the Right Size?
“Typically in swimwear, most women should go
one size up from their standard size, so if you are a
size 6, you might want to try a size 8 suit,” says Adam Moon, Fashion
Director at Macy’s . “When trying on a suit, make sure the straps fit well.
You should be able to fit one finger under the strap, but not much more
than that or the suit might be too big.” He says to make sure the top is
the right size and the sides are smooth with no bulging. “Bottoms should
not sag in the back. If they do, try a smaller size. If they pinch or bulge, try
a larger size,” he advises.
Finding a Style
Women need to look for the right suit to fit their specific body
type. “Great styles for a small bust include bandeau tops,
stripes, ruched cups or ruffles. For a larger bust, brasized
swimwear is a good choice, as are wide
straps, halters, square neck lines or surplice
styles,” Moon explains. “For tummy concerns,
try ruching, surplice styles, lighter
patterned tops with darker bottoms, and
suits with control fabric or babydoll tankinis.”
Most women are concerned about
the hip/rear/thigh area. For these women,
skirted bottoms or swim dresses and bandeaus
that attract attention to the shoulders
and neck is often the best bet.
Post Bikini Styles
Comfort is key and there is no reason to
feel compelled to fit into the dreaded bikini.
Flattering suits come in all forms in
today’s market, and when you are comfortable
in your bathing suit, you are more
likely to enjoy your beach and pool excursions,
rather than feeling uncomfortable. For baby boomers who
don’t necessarily want to wear bikinis anymore, Mann suggests
a “meet and greet” tankini. “The bottom is full and comes up
to the waist, and the top is long enough to go over the bottom
(down to the hip), so that even if you lift your arms, no belly
shows … yet, you have the comfort and ease of a twopiece’”
she explains.
Trends in 2010
Moon agrees and says that tankini separates are
the biggest selling type of suit of the season.
“Newness this season is really in solids with
detailing and ruching. In silhouette bandeau,
one-pieces with ruching have been great and
feel new. Faux tankinis (one-pieces that
look like they are actually separate tankinis and bottoms) are also
new,” explains Moon.
Buyers Reyna Freeman and Jeni
Hulick at California Sunshine in
Riverhead confirm that one of the
biggest trends in swimwear this
year has been solids. “A lot of
designers are offering a
rainbow spectrum of
colors. So no matter
your skin tone color,
you’ll be able to find a
solid that will flatter
you,” says Freeman. Still,
it’s important to remember
that taste and body
shape are wholly individual.
“No two customers are
the same; what doesn’t
flatter one customer looks great on another. This being
There really is
something for
everyone, and
women have to
remain open
minded that
designers fit
differently and
size scales vary.
said, there are some features in suits that are flattering. A suit that has
ruching down the front or side of a swimsuit hides a lot of sins.”
When it comes to the color, black has been and
continues to be a great color for hiding flaws,”
says Hulick. When talking colors, it’s important
to remember that every skin tone has variations
of what complements it color wise. Freeman
explains, “A lighter skin tone looks better in shades
of blue or green, while a darker skin tone looks great
in bright colors.”
Attitude
Bathing suit shopping is best explored with a positive
attitude. There really is something for everyone, and
women have to remain open minded that designers fit
differently and size scales vary. The best tool in your arsenal
might be your salesperson. “Allow a sales associate to help
you. They see all types of women day in and day out in different
swimwear,” says Hulick. “They have a vast knowledge when it comes to
fitting customers, whether you’re a DD cup or a size 18.”◆
Treating Menopausal Symptoms with
Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine
by Elana Omari, LAc
Menopause is treated as
a disease, when in fact it
is a naturally occurring
process. Conventional
medicine only addresses
various symptoms and
signs associated with menopause.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine
understand that symptoms
are merely indications
of an imbalance
deep within the body.
Menopause signifies “a
change” within a
woman's life due to a
shift in body chemistry—a
natural process.
Estrogen is part of what Acupuncturists
call “Body Essence.” It is like a gift given
to us at the time of conception. When
essence is abundant, our ability to fight
disease, illness and stress is optimal. As
we age, the supply of essence declines—
our organ system becomes unbalanced
leading to symptoms such as graying
hair, loss of libido, weakness of knees,
imbalance deep within
the body.
urinary difficulty, memory loss, backache
and fatigue.
Another factor is the imbalance
between yin and yang energy. Yin can
be thought of as the cooling system of
the body. When it declines, heat symptoms
will naturally arise, leading to night
sweats, restlessness, hot flashes, mood
swings, heart palpitation
and insomnia. The yang
energy represents the
warming and the metabolizing
functions of the
body. When it declines it
will manifest with symptoms
such as water retention,
cold hands and feet,
weight gain, edema, indigestion, hypertension,
or raised cholesterol levels.
When I’m treating menopausal symptoms
I first determine where the imbalance
lies and treat it successfully with
various therapies such as acupuncture,
herbs, diet, and cupping.
hiring an attorney to handle
your divorce, please
Hourly billing puts the
as expediently and cost
lawyer has an interest in billing as many
Hourly billing emphasizes the effort
Hourly billing actually rewards inefficiency
uncertainty and frustration to the client:
Clients want to know what their total
fee will be up front. Without this knowledge,
the client is left to estimate and
guess what their final legal bill will be.
An alternative approach to this is the
value-based flat-fee. Rather than charge
you for each and every
case, you are charged a
flat-fee for each phase -
What Can Digital Dentistry Do For You?
Daniel J. Aldieri, DDS
The exciting technological
advances that have
been made in the field of
dentistry are nothing short
of amazing. Many people
are now enjoying their visits to the dentist
thanks to digital technology which
provides more conservative, less invasive,
and more accurate results
than ever before. Imagine
going to the dentist and
having a porcelain crown
(cap) or filling completed
in just one visit; no need
to wear a temporary
crown or return for a second appointment.
Using CEREC (CAD) digital technology
is what makes it all possible.
What does CEREC (CEramic REConstruction)
mean for you? CEREC uses a
state-of-the-art digital 3D camera to create
an optical impression of your tooth. While
enjoying their visits to
sent to an on-site milling machine to create
your restoration. About 10 minutes later,
your all-ceramic, color matched crown or
tooth is restored to its natural beauty and
function. This is a true revolutionary technology
Old or broken silver fillings
make teeth appear dark
Good Advice
Consider This When Choosing Your Cosmetic Dentist
Angela M. Ferrari, DDS
Many patients arrive in our
office avoiding eye contact
and hiding their mouths with
their hands. After cosmetic
dental treatment, they leave
with confidence, pride in their appearance,
and a “radiance” about their beautiful
smile. Cosmetic dental treatment has
helped many patients feel
great about themselves
and enabled them to communicate
with others in
ways they never had
before. Having a realistic
expectation is very important
for a cosmetic dental patient. We
offer in-depth face-to-face consultations
during which we review the patient’s diagnostic
images to address their dental
needs and better understand their vision
for their customized “dream smile”. Two
of the easiest ways to rejuvenate your
smile are Zoom AP, 45 minute in-office
tooth whitening, and Invisalign. Another
way to rejuvenate your smile is by straightening
them. Invisalign is a clear form for
braces that move your teeth into a
straighter more youthful position. Both of
these treatments are great!
Sometimes the road to a fabulous smile
may be short or have some benchmarks.
Most importantly, it
involves developing a relationship
with a cosmetic
dentist that has open lines
of communication. Treatment
of the gums, tooth
position, color and shape,
may be needed to get a person’s smile
healthy and to esthetically achieve their
goals. Every smile is special and unique and
takes patience and confidence to build.
JACKIE OH!
by David Lefkowitz
My publisher said, “We have to take out all the
four-letter words, or you’ll be banned …” So I
took out all the four-letter words. And I was still
banned …
“Belle Svetlana surveyed her nude image in a full-length mirror, readying herself for
a thirty-thousand-dollar-an-hour sexual encounter with the fifteen-year-old son of an
Arab oil tycoon.”
Who else in the universe would open a novel with that sentence but Jackie Collins?
She’s the author of books so colorful and bawdy, fans have turned their pages to the
tune of more than 400 million sold copies. And why not? Flip to any page in her
newest, Poor Little Bitch Girl (St. Martin’s Press), and you’ll find a line like, “It was past
midnight, and straddling him in his living room with no clothes on was suddenly making
me feel quite vulnerable,” or this bit of legal tenderness, “Dewey had loser clients
up the wazoo, and frankly he didn’t give a fast fuck about any of them.”
“When I was a kid,” explains Collins in our phone chat shortly after New Year’s, “I was
an avid reader. And sometimes I would pick up a book, and the first page would be confusing.
There would be all these different characters introduced, and it would be kind of
boring. So I thought, ‘when I start to write, I really want to make characters very memorable
right from the start.’ And after 27 books, I like to grab people on the first page!”
The author of such works as The Stud, The Bitch, Lethal Seduction and Hollywood
Wives claims she has “absolutely never” been embarrassed by the frankness of her
material. “I’ve always written exactly what I want,” she says. “You cannot be a writer if
you’re going to think to yourself, ‘Oh, my Aunt Enid’s going to read that, and she’s not
going to like it.’ You’re your characters, and characters can do everything. For example,
in Poor Little Bitch Girl, I write about a black rapper, a gangbanger, a politician, a girl
who’s pregnant and not married, kidnappers, prostitutes – and I become the characters
when I’m writing them, but I’m never embarrassed because it’s not me, it’s my
characters. A storyteller has to feel that way. I would say to anybody out there who
wants to be a writer: You have to be true to yourself and not worry what other people
are going to think about it.
“My first book was The World is Full of Married Men, in 1968,” Collins recalls, “and my
publisher said to me, ‘We have to take out all the four-letter words, or you’ll be banned
in Australia and Boston.’ So I took out all the four-letter words. And I was still banned
in Australia, South Africa and Boston. Which was an interesting experience because I
was one of the first women to write very frankly about sexual situations. At that time,
women’s fiction was either, ‘Oh, poor woman! She’s either waiting for the man to
marry her, or else she’s having a nervous breakdown because he doesn’t.’ And along I
came with this book, The World is Full of Married Men, which is still in print today, and
it was about the double standard that existed between men and women.”
Over the years, we’ve witnessed moral finger-pointing at everyone from Madonna to
Roseanne to Rosie, but imagine the ire 40 years ago when a woman dared write for a
commercial audience, in graphic detail, about sexual politics. “There was a member of
Parliament who was in the closet,” Collins remembers, “and he took a half page in the
Sunday newspaper and said, ‘This is the most disgusting book I’ve ever read.’ He was
disgusted because I took the double standard and turned it on its head. He later came
out as a homosexual – which made it even more bizarre that he’d be so offended. But,
of course, the book was number one within two weeks.”
When I joke that mass popularity has a habit of hushing knee-jerk critics, Collins replies,
“It always does, doesn’t it? Sometimes I’ve had absolutely brilliant reviews, and other
Jackie Collins
an interview with

times they’ll really hate it. And there are times when I’m reviewed just for my
picture on the back of the book. But I don’t want to be a ‘literary’ writer; I
find them incredibly boring. I’m not interested in a three-page description of
the room, even if it’s lovely. I’m a storyteller and a popular-culture junkie.”
That said, building and maintaining such a loyal fan base takes an effort
that goes beyond even the labor of writing books beachgoers can’t put
down. “I used to get fan letters,” says Collins, “and then you just had to
send them an autographed picture; you had no communication whatsoever.
So it’s really great now; I have fans on my website and on my Facebook
page. I’m Jackiejcollins on Twitter, and I have a fabulous relationship with
[the readers] because I can answer their questions directly. Even if it’s oneword
answers, it’s great communication, and it’s world-wide.”
Computers have also made research much less onerous. “I wrote a book called, Lovers
& Gamblers [1977], which was all about a plane that crashed in the Amazon jungle. I was
surrounded by dictionaries and encyclopedias for weeks on end researching it. Weeks on
end! Now I think to myself, ‘oh my gosh!’ because I wrote a book recently called Lovers
and Players [2006] with a Russian girl in it, and I just got on the computer and found out
everything I wanted to know about Russia. It was great.”
Despite these up-to-the-minute strategies to reach her devotees, Collins’ working
method remains almost shockingly Luddite. “I write in long-hand,” she says, “and that’s a
very tedious process, so it takes me approximately nine months from the day I begin to
the day I finish. I mean, I do a lot of things on the computer, such as research and stuff
like that, but when it comes to writing, it’s a very comfortable feel for me to have the
black-felt pen and the yellow legal pad, and I can go wherever I want and just start writing.
Then my assistant will put it on the computer for me. I’ll get the typewritten pages
back at the end of the day, do my changes on those, and they’ll go back and forth between
her and me a few times. That’s the way I write; I wouldn’t want to do it any other way.”
Asked if she ever suffers from writer’s block, Collins replies, “I don’t. I get getting-tothe-desk
block. That’s me going, ‘I’ve gotta start writing, but maybe I should take the dog
out, maybe I should go to the gym or go and swim for a while.’ But once I’m at the desk,
I never get blocked long. I was reading about [Irish novelist] Marian Keyes today, who’s a
very fine writer and writes terrific books. Apparently she’s got a terrible depression and
can’t write. But that’s never happened to me.”
This despite enduring some trying times, in both her youth and her marriages. “I was a wild
child,” Collins, 71, recalls, “and I wanted to get away from home. I was obsessed with
Hollywood and America. In fact, at school, I used to pretend to be an American, that my father
was a spy with the CIA and that my whole family was undercover. But I got thrown out of
school. And by then, my sister [Joan] was very successful making movies with people like Paul
Newman. So my parents actually looked at me and said, ‘Okay. Reform school or Hollywood?’”
No shock, Collins chose the U.S.A., though her acting career didn’t quite soar like Joan’s.
“I never wanted to be an actress, but I couldn’t wait to get to America. When I got here,
though, it was like, ‘Oh, well, she’s not bad looking, she can be an actress.’ So I bummed
around at that and then came back to England to do a few movies. But in my mind, I was
always an out-of-work writer waiting to have a book published.”
Jealousy was never a factor in the Collins sisters’ relationship. “Joan did give me the gateway
to Hollywood,” says Jackie, “and later on, I was able to pay her back by giving her my book,
The Stud, which she starred in and my husband produced. And when Aaron Spelling saw her
playing Fontaine in The Stud, he said, ‘Let’s steal that character!’, which became Alexis
Carrington Colby in `Dynasty,’ and the resurgence of Joan’s career. She had a fantastic run on
television, and I’m very proud of her. We speak every day and remain the best of friends.”
Friendships are key in Collins’ life now, following two marriages and an engagement cut
short by illness. “I was married when I was a teenager to a man who, unfortunately, was
addicted to drugs. My second husband [Oscar Lerman] owned a nightclub and discotheques.
I think I saw every movie star and sports star known to man pass
through. So I heard incredible stories and saw incredible things. My books
are very much based on that and sometimes even toned down. I think that’s
one of the reasons people like my books: they’re not getting the front page
of a tabloid; they’re getting the real truth.”
Following Lerman’s death from cancer in 1992, Collins became engaged to
businessman Frank Calcagnini, “a fantastic man, but he also died of cancer.
I’ve nursed two of the loves of my life through terminal illnesses, and that’s
not easy, as anybody out there who’s gone through it knows. Nursing somebody
through a terminal illness is something that is so soul destroying
because you see somebody fade away. But I think I helped people by talking
about it at the time. I didn’t just mourn their deaths; I celebrated both these men’s lives.”
Though Collins hasn’t treated the subject in her fiction, she does sense an autobiography
is in the works. But don’t expect it to be filled with the naughtiness of her novels. “I
never did any of that stuff because I was always married!” she laughs. “[Oscar] was 20
years older than I and kept me on the straight and narrow.”
Asked if she is still, as she was once described by director Louis Malle, “a raunchy moralist,”
Collins replies, “Yes, and I love that quote, because it’s so true of the kinds of things
I write. The next book I’m working on is called, Goddess of Vengeance. It’s a Lucky
Santangelo book – she’s my most popular character. And I want to involve her in something
to do with a fictional Eastern country so she can fight for women’s rights. Maybe
she’ll come up against some fictional prince in an Arab country where women are treated
as third-class citizens. I know everybody thinks I write about Hollywood and glamour,
but it would also have that other element. The prince would want to take over Lucky’s
hotels in Vegas, and she comes up against him, and of course, she’s the most powerful
woman. It would be really fun to write.” ■
Favorite places in the world
Los Angeles. I find it such an exciting city. You can get in your car and be at the
beach in 20 minutes, or you can go to the desert, or you can go skiing in the
mountains. There’s so much to do here. It’s such a beautiful place, to drive along
the California coast; I love it.
Travel Guides
Passport to Adventure
It’s almost summer, and that means trips with family and friends to locations
near and far. Whether you sign on with a tour group or prefer to explore on
your own, travel books can be key to making the most of your travel time and
budget. Travel books proliferate; visit your local bookstore, and you’ll be
amazed at the sheer quantity of travel guides to just about any city, state, country
or region in the world; travel phrase books in every language you imagine;
and, themed travel compendiums on topics you’ve never even thought about.
Whatever your traveling goal, no matter how unusual, chances are there’s a
book you can purchase, or at the very least, a website you can visit to learn
more.
In order to choose the travel guide that best suits your need, I recommend
spending time in your local bookstore, thumbing through the guides to find the
ones you are most comfortable with. Some are basic guides, printed in black and
white, while others have glossy color photos with elaborate fold-out maps. All
feature the essential information needed to familiarize yourself with a particular
location, to learn about its history as well as options for transportation, lodging,
dining, attractions, sample itineraries, and more, and all the major travel guide
publishers have companion websites that offer additional information and downloads.
On Fodors.com, for example, an online phrase guide allows you to see and
hear 150 phrases in seven different languages, and you can download a free PDF
wallet guide to key phrases in each of the seven languages.
Beloware some popular travel guide series and their corresponding websites:
In addition to guides to different locations, be sure to check out the vast selection
of travel books with fascinating themes, like 1,000 Places to See Before
You Die: A Traveler's Life List; 500 Food Journeys of a Lifetime; 500 Places to
See Before They Disappear; 1,000 Ultimate Experiences; Make the Most of Your
Time on Earth; and, Bed in a Tree and Other Amazing Hotels Around the World
(including a hotel made completely of ice!).
Wherever your travels take you this summer, make the most of your time (and
money) by reading up and learning about the ins and outs of the locale you
plan to visit. It’s definitely worth your time. ◆
What exactly is the appeal of the travel memoir? Western civilization has had
something of a love affair with the travelogue (or travel literature, travel essay,
or travel memoir – take your pick) ever since Homer penned The Odyssey almost
three millennia ago. Those of you who remember your classics will recall the
story of Odysseus, a Greek hero cursed by the gods. He spends 20 years
battling Cyclopes, bedding nymphs and besting the elements in order to return
home to his beloved Ithaca. Along the way, he takes a veritable
“best-of” route through the Mediterranean, encountering everything
from tropical islands to monstrous whirlpools.
While the travelogue is a little more down-to-earth these days, it is
no less fraught with adventure or peril. Strictly speaking, travel literature
need not be a true story. But with so much to see and do in
the real word, why fictionalize? The modern armchair traveler has
discovered that by immersing herself in this genre, she can globetrot
for far less than the cost of a plane ticket, and without leaving the comfort of
her own home.
A slew of authors have been more than happy to oblige her needs: everyone
from Charles Darwin, to Paul Theroux (my mom’s favorite travel writer) to
Elizabeth Gilbert (of Eat, Pray, Love fame). These writers have little in common,
except that they traveled to distant (or not-so-distant) parts of the world
Travel Memoirs
by Marshall Honorof
and chose to share their adventures with us.
While there are travelogue writers out there to suit every taste, no column on
this subject would be complete without a mention of Bill Bryson, Anglo-American
author of such bestsellers as Notes from a Small Island and In a Sunburned
Country. In addition to a fairly impressive travel history, Mr. Bryson has the
uncanny ability to turn an ordinary backyard into a socio-geographic goldmine.
Both A Walk in the Woods and I’m a Stranger Here Myself take place in the
northeastern United States. The former deals with Mr. Bryson’s attempt to
hike the Appalachian Trail, an endeavor that he fails in the most charming,
entertaining style possible. The latter is a series of articles written by Mr.
Bryson upon returning to the United States after a long hiatus in England.
Of similar interest is Bill Bryson’s African Diary, which chronicles a trip he took
to Kenya with humanitarian organization CARE. The book is replete with Mr.
Bryson’s signature wit and charm. Perhaps no incident is more hilarious than
his death-defying trip on Kenyan Railways, which “has something of a tradition
of killing its passengers.”
If Mr. Bryson’s dry, somewhat-sardonic wit is not to your taste, don’t worry:
there is more than 3,000 years’ worth of other travel writing out there. In addition
to providing an entertaining read, a travelogue may well inspire your next
vacation. Just pray that you have better luck than Odysseus.
Help With Weight Loss and Diabetes
by Dr. Dazhi Chen, PhD, LAC
Recent reports dated
August 27th, 2007 show
two-thirds of American
adults are either overweight
or obese in this country and
obesity rates have grown
from 15% in 1978-1980 to 32% in 2003-04.
Not only does obesity increase the risk for
developing major diseases,
including type 2 diabetes,
heart disease and stroke,
but may lead to some forms
of cancer as well. Many
therapeutic weight loss programs
may work in the
short term, however, as
most Americans know, the
patient gains the weight
back almost immediately after he or she discontinues
the program — usually under
unhealthy conditions during treatment or
after the patient has stopped exercising.
Weight gain can be attributed to many
things, but metabolism is a key consideration
and should be looked at seriously.
Elder Mediation
By Rita Medaglio-Barrera, CDFA and Gloria Ciolli, MSW, CSW, ACSW, LMSW
Elder mediation recognizes
the voice of older
and disabled adults in
the decisions that
impact their quality of
life. Because most major
life changes involve the
whole family, decision-making rarely involves
just one issue. Mediation
provides an opportunity for
families to come together to
discuss these issues in an
open and supportive environment
that fosters creative
solutions that are best suited
for them.
Families will have to be able to evaluate
resources and options and develop ever
changing strategies to support their elders.
This will require communication and problem
solving skills that will need to be increasingly
sophisticated. Elder mediation is a first step
for families to help them address their changing
needs. It gives them a forum to share
decision making, express emotional feelings
and begin the decision making process
before it becomes a crisis.
Parties may seek mediation to resolve the
Good Advice
Do You Need To Avoid Probate?
By Marc Alhonte, Esq.
Probate is the judicial
process of approving a
will. All wills must be
approved by a Court,
regardless of the size of
the estate.
Some attorneys promote avoiding probate
for all estates, to
minimize costs. However,
probate does not represent
the only cost of settling
an estate. In all
estates, whether or not
probate is involved, assets
must be collected; debts
must be paid; tax returns
may be filed; estate taxes may be due;
and the beneficiaries must receive their
proper inheritance. An estate does not
avoid the need or the expense of doing
these things, by avoiding probate. The
Each estate must be
basis to
determine if avoiding
probate is a strategy
that makes sense.
advertisement
cost of avoiding probate may be more
than the cost of probate.
The way to avoid probate is to dispose
of your property outside your will;
through jointly owned assets, assets with
named beneficiaries (such as life insurance),
or placing assets in a living trust.
There are time when
avoiding probate can
serve an estate: to avoid a
probable will contest, or
where there is real estate
in multiple states. Each
estate must be analyzed
on a case-by-case basis to
determine if avoiding probate
is a strategy that makes sense.
Good Advice
Know Your Options When Considering Divorce
by Ann Block, Esq.
After litigating hundreds
of divorces, I have discovered
that choosing the best
approach for a particular
couple is a crucial first step.
LITIGATION involves two attorneys and
the Court process. Should the parties fail
to reach a settlement, the case proceeds
to trial and the fate of the litigants and
their children is determined by the Judge.
There is much time and
The mediator assists
the parties in working
out a settlement that is
mutually satisfactory.
advertisement
Good Advice
money wasted. The distrust
and acrimony
between the parties
increases as the litigation
progresses, often causing
irreparable damage to the
parties and their children.
MEDIATION involves a neutral thirdparty
mediator, usually an attorney or a
social worker. Both parties discuss the
issues with the mediator who assists the
parties in working out a settlement that is
mutually satisfactory. This process is best
when both parties communicate effectively
with each other and are sufficiently
knowledgeable about the economics of
their relationship.
COLLABORATIVE LAW involves two
experienced and trained attorneys who
protect and advise their clients. The parties
and the attorneys work together to
achieve a mutually satisfactory settlement
which fosters the needs of the parties and
their children. There is full financial disclosure
and experts are
retained when needed.
There is no wasted time,
thus the process is more
cost effective than litigation.
This process is ideal
for most divorcing couples
as it promotes settlement and minimizes
the acrimony.
Beauty
by Gina Roberts-Grey
Are All Shampoos Created Equal?
What You Need to Know to Avoid a Bad Hair Day
Nicole Spencer, 32,
has shampoo on her
mind. “I’ve got curly
hair, so I can’t just pop
into a store and grab
any brand shampoo
or conditioner off the
shelf because my hair
might wind up too dry
or unable to hold a
style.” But, hair care
experts say Spencer’s
pickiness isn’t a bad
thing.
Delnita Smith, a
licensed cosmetologist, says everyone should be mindful of what they’re
putting on their heads because “using the right shampoo and conditioner
are the foundation of every hair style … and of
healthy hair.”
Which means you’ve got to know how to
find the “right” one for you.
When assessing
ingredients, look
for elements
from nature like
aloe vera and nut
oils.
looks and feels coarse, like straw,” says Smith.
“Usually, pricey products work so well because of
the quality of their ingredients and performance
guarantee,” Smith says.
Straw-like hair is exactly why Spencer opts to
shell out a few extra bucks for shampoo and conditioner.
“Because I’ve got curly hair that I don’t
want to look like straw, I pay attention to ingredients,
not price,” says Spencer.
Pricier is Better?
The experts say you get what you pay for, and
a pricier shampoo is worth the money. Here’s
why: A product’s price tag is often driven by its
ingredients. And because of their ingredients,
cheaper brands can strip your hair of too much
of its natural oils. “That can result in hair that
Demystifying the Label
Many brands offer promises of being “moisturizing.”
Others boast of containing must-have ingredients.
But, our experts say many of these claims are a bit of
a stretch while others are completely unnecessary.
These ingredients, say experts, aren’t worth the price:
Proteins. They’re certainly great for building muscle
but won’t do a thing for your hair.
Vitamins and provitamins. Wash them down with
water, and they’ll help keep you healthy. Wash your hair
with them, and you’ll wash your money down the drain.
Botanical extracts. They appeal to your sniffer
(giving products their scent) but offer no benefit to
your hair.
Humectants. One big word with one little effect.
Detergents remove the humectants that attract
moisture to hair.
What to Look For
Ingredients really are the cornerstone to shampoos
and conditioners. And beyond name, price
or smell, experts say they’re what you should pay
attention to when choosing a product.
They’re listed on labels from the highest content
to lowest. If water is listed early on, you’ll have to
use more to get the same results as a higherpriced
brand. “You may even need to wash twice with cheaper brands to
get the same effect of one wash with a pricier shampoo,” says Smith. You
can usually use a dime-sized amount of an expensive brand versus a silver
dollar size portion or bigger of a cheap one. So, ounce for ounce the professional
brand costs less.
Some ingredients you do want are coincidentally the ones that jack up the
price. A bottle of shampoo with top-of-the-line ingredients can run anywhere
from $10 to $40, depending on the size, compared to a bargain
brand you can pick up for about $4.
When assessing ingredients, look for elements from nature like aloe vera,
which has tissue reparative properties, and nut oils which coat your hair’s
cuticles so water stays locked inside. Smith cautions steering clear of brands
with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). “It’s one very common detergent that can
damage your hair.” SLS also dries hair out and can aggravate the scalp. “It
can also lead to thinning hair after extended use because it’s so harsh and
irritating,” Smith says.
Another benefit to higher-priced products, says Keneesha Hudson,
licensed cosmetologist and hair salon owner, is they use very mild detergents
which cuts down on damage to hair. “It also keeps color brighter,
longer and curls from being tight, dry or wooly,” Hudson says.
Two Aren't As Good As One
Moderate to high-priced lines usually have products that suit every hair
type individually (oily, normal, dry and damaged, fine, colored or perm, etc.)
versus one or two “universal” one shampoo fits all hair types options. And
don’t try to save a buck by using an all-in-one shampoo/conditioner combo
product. It may save you time in the shower, but you’ll have to sacrifice in
your style. Smith says stick to separate shampoo and conditioner.
“Shampoos can’t effectively cleanse if they’re combined with something
that’s designed to coat hair and remoisturize it,”
she says. And your hair needs each specific benefit
both shampoos and conditioners offer.
The Bottom Line
If high priced isn’t in your budget, “bargain
brands work if you do your homework to find the
right one,” says Smith. Start with your hair type: Is
your hair dry, greasy and limp, damaged or color
treated? “Once you understand what you’re dealing
with, you can target products specifically formulated
for your hair,” she says.
And, forgo flipping open the lid in the middle of
the store to choose a product based strictly on its
scent. “I learned the hard way,” says Spencer.
“Some scents don’t smell strong in the store but
can be too overpowering when they’re on your
head all day.”◆
Superior Results In Less Time
Many women and men have shied away from Laser Hair
Once you’ve decided that you’re ready to have your unwanted
you decide to have your treatment. It is important that you know
you’re going to be treated by a certified laser technician who is
treat ALL SKIN TYPES. Unlike many other lasers on the market
(and there are many out there) the GentleMAX Laser allows
us to work on clients with minimal risk and can remove hundreds
Lainie Kazan
For Real
There’s no mistaking that full-throttled laugh that undulates in sensual
waves even over the phone. New York native Lainie Kazan’s
deep, husky tones float through the airwaves loud and clear –
even 3,000 miles away on a car phone en route to getting her
nails done. This is one busy Lainie. Not that she wasn’t hard-working
before. But this philanthropic mega-talent (who’ll be performing
May 31 at Westbury Music Fair) is juggling much more than
usual these days.
Except this mid-week day, she’s running around for personal,
rather than professional, purposes. After dropping her granddaughter
Isabella off at toddler-karate class, Kazan was ready for a
mini-respite from her over- scheduled work week. “I’m on my way
to get my nails done and I’m not working this week,” she confided
during a recent interview wedged in between chores. “And I’m
leaving for a little R&R so I can just breathe, take a massage, take
a mud bath, anything like that,” she sighed in anticipation. “No
activity, I just want to go into a pretty space because my brain
hurts,” she laughed. What kind of special treats was she looking
forward to? “Everything. I like acupressure and acupuncture and foot massage. I
love it all,” she said enthusiastically. Where was she off to for this much-deserved
three-days-of-divine-decadence? “I’m not telling,” she laughed.
This zaftig, Brooklyn native has been multitasking before there was even a word
for it during her still-going-strong 35-year career. But now, the California transplant
has to carefully orchestrate every task down to the nanosecond for one simple reason:
My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
LIW Digital Edition Bonus Pages
ethnicity is Greek.
Kazan was barely taking a breather from her whirlwind television
and touring schedule when the phone rang. “There I was at
home and the call came asking me to read for the part of Maria in
an independent film to be financed by Tom Hanks and Rita
Wilson. I was asked to do what is called a ‘table-read’ of a script
that was maybe going to be made into a movie,” she continued.
“Tom said, ‘Listen, if we ever make this into a movie we want
you for the mother.’ And I said, ‘yeah, sure,’” she laughed, figuring
that would be pretty unlikely. No one thought in their wildest dreams that the slim
tale would have such legs, she added. With the movie having grossed more than
$100 million, and video sales and rentals racking up even more profit, everyone
involved was understandably thrilled with the little-sleeper-that-could.
The victory is even sweeter, Kazan said, since first-time critics thought the movie
a sentimental, albeit well-made, television-type treacle with a terrific cast. So much
for the discernment of critics. The public’s reaction was a different story, as everyby
Naomi Serviss
“I love Long Island.
Some of the best
years of my life were
spent there.”
The stratospheric popularity of this little indie movie about an ugly duckling
with a fairy tale ending, took everyone involved by surprise. Producers Tom Hanks
and Rita Wilson deigned it a labor of love after Wilson saw the one-woman stage
version of the story in Los Angeles.
But not even Nostradamus could have predicted the meteoric success of the sweetnatured
romantic comedy about an over-involved Greek family. In the movie and television
series based on it, Kazan plays Maria, a broadly-drawn ethnic character
steeped in maternal love and simmering with familial devotion. Except this time,
instead of her tackling the Jewish or Italian mother stereotype, the
one knows by now, and vaulted the movie into cinema history. Kazan has welcomed
this unexpected career coup much like she welcomes everything in her life:
with grace and humility. “It’s a phenomenal experience and I feel blessed, I truly
do,” she said with passion rising in her voice.
This unexpected bounty has left Kazan justifiably giddy with happiness and having
the time of her life. And she’s thrilled she’ll be sharing details of it with her Long
Island audience during her concert performance at Westbury this month. She said
it will be the very sweetest kind of homecoming. “The very first professional job I
had after getting my Equity Card was at Westbury,” she said proudly. The Hofstra
graduate reflected lovingly on her time spent on Long Island. “I love Long Island.
Some of the best years of my life were spent there,” she recalled.
The past two years have been a professional and personal challenge for many reasons,
she revealed during the interview. Gearing up for that much-deserved threeday
R&R break, she happily shared insights into her successful career trajectory.
Kazan’s professional pedigree reads like a how-to manual in breaking into and
staying solvent in, show biz. From community theater when she was a youngster, to
Broadway, Kazan has shared the stage, movie and television studios with the likes of
Frank Sinatra, Peter O’Toole, Barbra Streisand and Andrea Martin, to name but a few
luminaries. Her experience runs the gamut from playing a corpse whose death was
off-screen, in 1968’s forgettable movie Lady in Cement (with Sinatra), to portraying
the recurring television role of Grace’s endearing Aunt Honey in Will & Grace.
From being a chorine in Hofstra University’s productions of The Student Prince and
South Pacific, to carving a niche for herself on television’s My Big Fat Greek Life, Kazan
has successfully made her mark in the business for the past 35 years. From B-movies to
critically-acclaimed films (My Favorite Year, Beaches, Harry and the Hendersons, The
Cemetery Club and 29 th Street) and television shows (St. Elsewhere, The Nanny,
Veronica’s Closet and Touched By an Angel), Kazan has not only acted her way up the
Hollywood ladder, she’s also been impressing live audiences with her cabaret performances
for decades. She grew
up admiring the likes of
Milton Berle and Lucille
Ball, gleaning comedy
tips from those two
veterans of the genre.
Kazan has also
appeared on The
Dean Martin Show
an unprecedented
26 times, and produced
and starred
in Broadway’s allstar
tribute to Ethel
Merman. The tribute,
a benefit for the Gay
Men’s Health Crisis, was
dubbed “Doin’ What
Comes Natur’lly,” and also
featured powerhouse stars
Bette Midler, Patti LuPone,
Madeline Kahn, Elaine Stritch and
Andrea Martin. She’s sung with the Boston
Lainie Kazan and Michael Constantine
on the set of CBS’s
My Big Fat Greek Life
Pops and Cleveland Pops and before sold-out venues throughout the U.S., Europe
and Asia. She’s also lent her name to Playboy clubs in Los Angeles and New York –
“Lainie’s Room” and “Lainie’s Room East.” When she’s on the East Coast she typically
plays sold-out shows at two favorite haunts, The Algonquin and Regency
hotels. She’s been Tony and Emmy-nominated and received television’s CableACE
Lainie Kazan interview
from Long Island Woman May 2003

May 2002 • LONG ISLAND WOMAN • 21
Lainie Kazan
Award. Her CDs include Lainie Kazan in the Groove and
Body and Soul.
Her philanthropic works include board membership
on the Young Musician’s Foundation, B’nai Brith
and the AIDS Project in Los Angeles.
Her role models were rich and varied, she said, from
Hollywood entertainers to educational colleagues. “I
absolutely idolized Judy Garland and got a lot of inspiration
from her,” she said. An avid moviegoer since she
was small, Kazan knew she was born to entertain and
rehearsed during many a family gathering.
Which explains her penchant for performing live
in front of an appreciative audience. Her vocal
prowess, a dark mixture of sultry and passionate
tinged with humor, has won acclaim from reviewers
worldwide and her ability to charm an audience is
apparent in her guilelessness. She connects to a live
audience because she shares personal tidbits in a
sophisticated, yet playful, manner.
“I think that being on a nightclub stage is as close
to the real me as you can get,” she said. Playing a
character is wonderful, but when she performs before
a live audience, there’s a magic that’s lacking on
movie or television sets, she reflected. “I am who I
am (on stage), not playing a character. And all the
facets of my life are out there in my songs – the funny
ones, the tragic ones. I’m very free on stage, it’s very
liberating,” she said.
And she has no plans to take it easy either, despite
being temporarily sidelined last year by a bad hip. A
dancer since she was a youngster in neighborhood
dance class, Kazan chalks up her bad hip to countless
performances since toddlerhood. Her first public
appearance was at age 4-1/2, in front of an audience
at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. She won the
crowd over with her toddler rendition of “I’ll Be
Down to Get You In a Taxi, Honey,” which she sang
laughingly, to prove she still knew the words.
But knowing the words doesn’t help when you
have a bum hip, she continued. Fortunately, the hip
surgery she underwent last year was a complete success
and her much-improved health imbued her with
a new sense of enthusiasm for performing live.
“I am very happy right now and my life is very
comfortable. In fact, I’m doing fantastic,” she said
with a laugh that sounded like singing. Before the
surgery she was in constant pain, she added. “My hip
was getting worse and worse every day. But as soon
as I had the operation, I got better and better every
day.” No cane, no pain, she said.
The timing couldn’t have been better, either, considering
her television sitcom schedule is a grueling
five days a week, sometimes 12 hours a day. “I’m not
complaining,” she emphasized. “I’m very grateful to
be so busy and I have never had this kind of extraordinary
success.” But the differences between filming
a movie and a television show are vast. “There’s a lot
of memorization, last-minute changes and the tension
and the pressure is enormous,” she continued.
“We have to go out there and not just make the audience
laugh, we have to please the network, the producers,
a lot of different people.”
With her extensive experience in numerous entertainment
genres, how does acting in a weekly sitcom
compare to movie-making? With the movies, she
said, it’s a whole other ball game. “The producers
don’t see it until the movie is finished and the pressure
is lessened,” she said. When asked about the
LIW Digital Edition Bonus Pages
general negative critical response to the television’s
premiere episodes, she shrugged it off. “The movie
(My Big Fat Greek Wedding) didn’t get great reviews
either,” she said matter-of-factly. “But people love it.
The television show came in first and second (the first
two weeks) so we must have captured an audience. I
think we did great and it’s one of the highest-rated
shows this year.”
How does her character compare to the real
Lainie? “Maria is a warm and loving mother and I
think I am,” she reflected. “She’s also a generous soul
and I think I am, too. She’s not quite as sophisticated
as I am but those are the qualities that people are
responding to right now.
“I’m everybody’s mother – there for her kids, totally
supportive and doesn’t expect that much of them,”
she said, adding that the mother may be similar to
other ethnic characters she’s portrayed in film and
theater. “I don’t share her (Maria’s) taste in clothes or
hair because my tastes run wild. But that’s because I
grew up in another culture, really counter-culture,”
said the 1960 graduate of Brooklyn’s once-prestigious
Erasmus Hall High School, an institution known for its
high scholastic requirements. “Brooklyn then was
lovely and wonderful and safe and I had two parents
who were very unusual. We were not your average
Jewish family,” she said. “My father was a bookie and
my mother was like the Jewish Blanche Dubois, very
dramatic,” she chuckled.
Then, sounding reluctant to end the conversation,
she said, “I hate to tell you but I’ve reached my destination.”
She undoubtedly has. r
