MEETINGS / PROGRAMS:
✦ 1st General Meeting - BCMTA Open House took place on September 11,
2011. A prayer and moment of silence began the program to respect the
9/11 date. The program featured performances by students who were
winners of various competitions, the introduction and welcoming of new
members, and a pot luck fellowship.
✦ 2nd General Meeting took place on October 23rd and was entitled “Bach
at the Keyboard: What can we learn about teaching Bach at the piano
through his compositions for organ?” by Dr. Julie Rozman.
✦ 3rd General Meeting - BCMTA Holiday Party was hosted by Dr. Dianne
Garvin in her beautiful home on December 11th.
✦ 4th General Meeting - Creative Ideas for Teaching Composition was
hosted and presented by Gail Smith. Gail also premiered two compositions
she had written and dedicated to Sheri Garlock and Mary Beth Purchase.
✦ Judith Burganger, member and Artist in Residence at Florida Atlantic
University, gave a series of four Piano Pedagogy Workshops on
September 24, October 22, December 3, and January 14 inviting all
teachers to attend and bring students to play in her Master Classes.
INITIATIVES:
✦ We created a tri-fold brochure with the design/ research assistance of
Horace Brooks (brother of Sheri Garlock) from the Tampa Tribune entitled
Music Teaches: 10 Reasons Why Music Education is Essential for the
purpose of promoting music study and advertising BCMTA. A space is
provided for teachers to include their personal studio contact information as
well as referring potential students to our website. We have been passing
these out at all events throughout the year and are happy to share this
brochure with other interested MTA’s. File will be attached and emailed.

FSMTA Fall 2012 District VI President 15
✦ Horace Brooks is also currently working to update the look of our
BCMTA Website www.bcmta.org and make it accessible through a
password to all executive board members. We are forever indebted to
Barbara Muze for all of her hard work in getting BCMTA up online and in
continuing to keep membership informed with bi-monthly newsletters which
are continually archived on our website. Carolyn Morgan takes care of
mass emails for announcements that occur between newsletters.
✦ The BCMTA Convalescent Home Initiative first announced at the Open
House was successful in accepting a $1,000 donation from the Palm Aire
Friends of the Arts for the purpose of purchasing and donating a state of
the art keyboard (Yamaha DGX 640) to a convalescent facility (Grand
Court Village) previously without a piano or keyboard. The studios of Sheri
Garlock and Mary Beth Purchase have since been teaming together to
provide monthly performances by our students at this facility. The initiative
was later named Young Musicians for the Young at Heart. A plaque
displaying a picture of children performing on the donated keyboard was
presented by Sheri Garlock to the Palm Aire Friends to express our
appreciation for their donation. A brass name plate was attached to the
keyboard in their honor as well.
It is our hope that the initiative for every FSMTA piano studio or team of
studios to:
1) adopt a nearby nursing home
2) raise funds to provide a quality instrument 3) commit to monthly
performances
will catch on statewide and continue on into the future.
✦ We successfully launched our FIRST Annual BCMTA Jazz, Pop, & Rock
Festival for the purpose of showcasing students performing in these genres
in a non-competitive concert. The City of Pompano Beach supported this
event by donating the services of facility manager, Nick Lazazzara and staff
at the beautiful Herb Skolnick Community Center. Refreshments were also
donated. $330 was raised and donated to the 2012 FSMTA Conference
along with the initial commitment of $1,000 and the purchase of a full page
ad.

FSMTA Fall 2012 District VI President 15
✦ Our BCMTA Librarian, Karola Zehme and her husband Uwe, worked
very hard to transfer all VCR tapes from our library to DVDs and bought
cases and labels for each item.
✦ BCMTA is still going “green” by using the website www.bcmta.org
instead of incurring the expense of printing out a yearbook each year.
✦ MUSICTHON, our primary annual BCMTA fundraiser, teamed up with
4KIDS of South Florida www.4KIDSofsfl.org for an all-weekend event
taking place at the Galleria Mall. Teachers signed up for 30 or 60 minute
time slots. Students were asked to raise a minimum of $15 each in order to
participate and received a commemorative t-shirt. Students were
encouraged to wear the t-shirts to perform. T-shirts displayed the wording
“Kids Playing 4Kids in Crisis” along with the BCMTA logo and a student’s
graphic art design on the back. The Piano Showcase donated a beautiful
grand piano for the event which was our most successful fundraiser to
date. A total of $13,947.75 was raised netting $11,211.40 after expenses.
$4,000 was donated to 4KIDS of South Florida which is the primary intake
facility for children who are removed from their homes to be placed in foster
care.
✦ Treasurer Annamarie Cockreham filed IRS 990-N (e-postcard) on the
following dates: 1) 10/9/2010 for year ending 2009
2) 10/7/2011 for year ending 2010
3) 10/23/2012 for year ending 2011
Annamarie continually stays on top of all possible changes in the IRS
protocols and in filing whatever is needed to maintain our 501-C status.
