<strong>Salvius</strong> <strong>himself</strong> <strong>had</strong> <strong>arrived</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> <strong>camp</strong> <strong>first</strong> a <strong>little</strong> <strong>earlier</strong>. <strong>Now</strong> <strong>he</strong> was sitting in <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong><br />

<strong>he</strong>adquarters of <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> second legion, anxiously waiting for Agricola. He was worried<br />

because <strong>he</strong> <strong>had</strong> written many lies in a letter which <strong>had</strong> <strong>had</strong> sent to Agricola. Firstly,<br />

<strong>he</strong> <strong>had</strong> accused Cogidubnus of rebellion. He was wondering w<strong>he</strong><strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong>r Agricola<br />

would believe him. He <strong>had</strong> brought Belimicus with him as a witness.<br />

„Wh<strong>at</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> treac<strong>he</strong>ry!” <strong>he</strong> said. “Wh<strong>at</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> insanity. I can scarcely believe wh<strong>at</strong><br />

you have revealed to me. Cogidubnus and I have been friends for a long time. T<strong>he</strong><br />

king is insane. T<strong>he</strong> chieftains of <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> Regnenses are insane. We should never trust<br />

barbarians; <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong>y always betray us.”<br />

Having said <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong>se things, <strong>he</strong> turned to Silanus, <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> commander of <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> legion.<br />

“Silanus” <strong>he</strong> said, “It is necessary for us to crush <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> king and <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> chieftains of <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong><br />

Regneses as quickly as possible. You must set out with two cohorts <strong>at</strong> once.”<br />

Silanus, having left <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> <strong>he</strong>adquarters, gave <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> orders to <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> centurions. He ordered<br />

<strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong>m to prepare <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> cohorts. Meanwhile Agricola began to ask more about <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> king‟s<br />

treac<strong>he</strong>ry. <strong>Salvius</strong> replied to him,<br />

“Here is Belimicus, a man of excellent character and <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> utmost loyalty, whom th<strong>at</strong><br />

Cogidubnus tried to corrupt. But Belimicus, who rejected <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> fl<strong>at</strong>teries of <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> king,<br />

revealed everything to me.”<br />

Agricola however, having distrusted this words, asked <strong>Salvius</strong> more carefully wh<strong>at</strong><br />

were <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> signs of <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> rebellion. He wanted to know how many armed men <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong>re<br />

were, w<strong>he</strong><strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong>r <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> Britons <strong>had</strong> killed Roman citizens and which cities <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong>y <strong>had</strong><br />

destroyed.<br />

Suddenly all <strong>he</strong>ard a gre<strong>at</strong> shout. Through <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> door of <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> <strong>he</strong>adquarters burst a man<br />

covered in dirt. He ran straight to Agricola and clung to his knees.<br />

Having said <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong>se things, <strong>he</strong> fell to <strong>t<strong>he</strong></strong> ground unconscious.<br />

Were <strong>Salvius</strong>’ tactics well-chosen?<br />
