1.1.12 <strong>Dealer</strong> License Plates<br />

A dealer plate must be attached to each new vehicle owned or assigned to a dealer’s inventory while it is<br />

being driven on a public highway. The plate must be attached to the rear <strong>of</strong> vehicle, in the same location<br />

provided for license plates.<br />

Note: See DLR 140 for authorized use <strong>of</strong> dealer plates.<br />

1.2 DLR 105-HOW TO OBTAIN AN ORIGINAL LICENSE CERTIFICATE<br />

Code <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>: §§ 46.2-1500, 46.2-1900, 46.2-1900.1 and 46.2-1900.2<br />

1.2.1 Who Needs a License Certificate<br />

All <strong>of</strong> the below who wish to engage in business in <strong>Virginia</strong> must first obtain a License Certificate for<br />

each place <strong>of</strong> business they operate.<br />

• Franchised Automobile <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Franchised Truck <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Franchised <strong>Motor</strong>cycle <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Franchised T&M <strong>Dealer</strong><br />

• Independent Automobile <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Independent Truck <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Independent <strong>Motor</strong>cycle <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Independent Trailer <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Independent T&M <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Supplemental Locations <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> the Above<br />

• Demolishers<br />

• Rebuilders<br />

• Salvage <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

• Savage Pools<br />

• Distributors<br />

• Manufacturers<br />

• Factory/Distributor Branches<br />

1.2.2 Period <strong>of</strong> Validity <strong>of</strong> License Certificate<br />

A <strong>Dealer</strong> License Certificate is valid for either one or two years as selected by applicant. All <strong>Dealer</strong><br />

License Certificates will expire on the last day <strong>of</strong> the month <strong>of</strong> expiration.<br />

1.2.3 Applying for Your Original <strong>Dealer</strong> License Certificate<br />

Submit all necessary papers, forms and fees to DMV/MVDB at the same time.<br />

1.2.4 All <strong>Dealer</strong>s<br />

ALL dealers must submit:<br />

a. form DSD-10, “<strong>Motor</strong> Vehicle <strong>Dealer</strong> License Application for Initial License or Renewal”<br />

b. either the single or the two-year fee for the license as appropriate<br />
