Montana's 2009
Champion Child
SHODAIR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Welcome
From the Administrator
It is spring in Montana and a time of
great renewal. It's a time when the birds return
from their long trip south, the children are finally
able to go outside without bulky coats, and the
plants and trees begin to bloom. Another aspect of
spring in Montana is our wildly unpredictable
weather. It can be warm and sunny one day, and
then a spring snowstorm can blow through,
plummeting temperatures forty or fifty degrees and
blanketing the landscape with numerous inches of
snow the next. These spring storms are short lived,
and we know that summer is close at hand.
Here at Shodair Children's Hospital, we are
constantly in a state of renewal. We assess our
programs and processes to see how we can
improve to continue providing high quality
services to children and families across the state.
Our clinical staff, in both psychiatry and genetics,
led by the medical staff, continually reviews and
changes our programs to meet or exceed the
standard of care in both areas. Through this
re-evaluation process, we are able to offer
state-of-the-art services right here in Montana.
As of this writing, we are in the middle of our
budgeting cycle. Shodair has been effected by the
economic downturn just as everyone else has
been across the nation. As the financial stability of
some families deteriorates, they become stressed;
incidents of abuse, neglect, and emotional problems
rise. This comes at a time when some families have
lost health insurance coverage in conjunction with
the loss of a job. Throughout Shodair's long history,
we have been able to provide services to those
who don't have the means to pay for them.
We are able to do so thanks to the kind support
of the people of Montana.
Jack Casey
Shodair Children’s Hospital
Administrator
Additionally, we are able to provide services
because of support we receive from the Montana
Legislature. This session, HB 71, sponsored by
Representative Diane Sands (D - Missoula), is vital
to Shodair's ability to provide services to
Montana's Medicaid population. This bill
provides funding to hospitals to bring their
Medicaid reimbursement levels closer to the cost
of services. The Legislature has also been very
supportive of the Montana Medical Genetics
Program and the Newborn Screening Program,
a partnership between Shodair and the Montana
Department of Public Health and Human Services.
At this time of great uncertainty for many, our
spirits have been renewed by the unwavering
support of our generous donors and members
of the Legislature, and we look forward to
many more seasons of serving Montana's
families together.
Sincerely,
John P. Casey

Mention the term major depression,
and many people assume the condition applies
only to adults. As Montana's new Champion
Across America will tell you, this illness also affects
children. Eleven-year old Zach Bell has been
battling major depression for the past three years.
Today, Zach is a confident and creative fifth
grader, who loves to fish whenever he can.
Zach wasn't always able to separate himself from
difficult positions. In 2006, he was dealing with
some major stressors, which made his psychiatric
symptoms more serious and even potentially
dangerous. Zach was hospitalized
in Shodair's Acute Unit, where he
was diagnosed with three psychiatric
conditions: Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD), Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and
major depression. Zach spent four
months at Shodair, where he
received intensive psychotherapy,
medication, and individual,
group, and family therapies for
his depression.
Like any chronic illness, Zach
knows that depression may be a
life-long battle. This brave young
man is up for the challenge, and
continues with outpatient therapy as
well as medication management to keep on top
of his conditions. Zach lives with his grandmother,
Ann Tate, who says the difference in his behavior
after he returned from Shodair was unbelievable.
“He still has his ups and downs, like every child
does,” Ann said. “I'm really proud of him,”
she added.
The courageous way Zach has addressed his
challenges is why he was named Montana's 2009
Champion Across America, representing the state
and Shodair Children's Hospital. He joins 49 other
young ambassadors from across the nation
participating in the Children's Miracle Network's
Champions Across America program, which is
sponsored this year by Walmart and Sam's Club.
Spring 2009
Zach is the only champion in 2009 to represent
children's mental health issues.
Earlier this spring, Zach and his grandmother,
along with the champions from other states, visited
Washington D.C. and Walt Disney World in
Orlando, Florida, where they were honored at a
series of events. Zach's selection was announced
during a special send-off event in March at the Great
Falls Walmart, where Ann works as an associate.
In addition to receiving gifts from Walmart and
Sam's Club, Zach was surprised with a $500
Walmart/ Sam's Club gift card. Before Zach began
his shopping spree, he received
another honor: Great Falls Mayor
Pro Tempore Bill Bronson honored
Zach by declaring March 13 as
“Zach Bell Day” in the city.
Later that afternoon, Zach was
honored with proclamations from
the 2009 Legislature in Helena.
He ended his very busy day at the
Montana Logging Association's
spring meeting, where he was
presented with fishing gear. When
asked about the whirlwind of
events, Zach said simply: “I think
it's a little overwhelming and
very, very cool.”
A few days later, Zach and Ann flew to Orlando,
where they met champion children and their families
from across the country. These special ambassadors
and their families were treated to passes to Walt
Disney World theme parks and a variety of musical
entertainment. Zach even found himself dancing
onstage with Julianne Huff of “Dancing with the
Stars” fame.
Next, the champions flew to Washington DC, joined
by Miss America 2009 Katie Stam and country star
Mark Wills. The champions toured the White House
and met the President, who invited Zach and other
children to try out the new playset constructed for
first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama. “We were
the second people in the world to get to play on it,”
Zach said.
continued on page 4
3
In addition to the White House visit, the Champions had the
chance to visit with their senators and congressmen during a
luncheon on Capitol Hill. That afternoon, Zach met Montana
Senator Max Baucus, who said, “I had such a great time
getting to know Zach—he's a fantastic fisherman. He's truly
an inspiration and a great example of the grit, spirit, and
determination that define Montanans. Zach is one brave kid,
and I know he's going to do great, thanks to his positive
attitude, his fantastic doctors at Shodair and the Children's
Miracle Network.” The Senator added, “I'm so proud to call him
a Montanan and I hope to see him this summer out at Prickly
Pear Creek—maybe he can teach me a thing or two.”
Zach and the other special champions from all 50 states and
Canada represent children's health care needs and hospitals that
provide critically-needed care to young patients throughout the
nation. Children's Miracle Network, an alliance of premier
hospitals for children, is a non-profit organization dedicated to
saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for
children's hospitals across North America.
Shodair has served the needs of Montana's children for over
110 years, and is one of the 170 premier children's
hospitals included in the Children's Miracle Network.
It is Montana's only Children's Miracle Network
hospital, and the only facility in the state to offer both
residential and acute psychiatric treatment in one
location. In addition to specialized psychiatric care for
Montana children and adolescents, Shodair provides
comprehensive medical genetic services to patients of
all ages from throughout the state.
You can support Shodair, the Children's Miracle Network,
and activities like the Champions Across America program
by contributing to the fund-raising efforts of national sponsors like
Annual
Shodair Telethon
Coming Up
Saturday, May 30
The telethon has been a staple of Shodair fundraising events
for many years. The eleven-hour event is broadcast live from the
hospital each year, and features segments from the national
Children's Miracle Network Celebration.
The event brings people together from around the state in an
effort to show and tell the story of the important work done at
Shodair Children's Hospital, and to introduce some of the patients
and families whose lives have been changed as a result of it. It's
a labor of love for a broad-ranging, caring group of people who
work tirelessly to build support and generate donations to ensure
those vital services remain available.
Television personalities from around the state come to Helena
to act as on-air hosts, and area service groups and supporters
volunteer their time on the phone banks throughout the day.
Children's Miracle Network corporate sponsors located in
Montana also take part, by volunteering or participating in check
presentations throughout the day. Helena businesses donate food
to feed the hungry army, and hospital employees work overtime
to ensure the event is a success.
Telethon host
Century Club
Television celebrities from across Montana
chip in to help out on Telethon day.
One host, well-known to the Montana broadcast industry, is
Dan Snyder, now of Kalispell. Dan has been a host for Shodair
since the telethon's first broadcast in 1989. A long-time on-air
favorite, Dan will again be an anchor for this year's event.
Zach Bell, Montana's 2009 Children's Miracle Network Champion
Across America, will be on hand, along with patients, families,
and Shodair staff who will share stories of challenges faced and
triumphs won over psychiatric and genetic conditions.
In addition to offering residents a chance to support Montana's
only Children's Miracle network hospital, the telethon is an
opportunity for Shodair to recognize and thank its many
supporters. Donors large and small are recognized on air for
their important contributions. Shodair is a non-profit hospital,
and depends on the help of all of its generous supporters—from
Children's Miracle Network sponsors to individuals who donate
what they can, when they can.
Cancer Consultations on the Rise
at Shodair
Katherine Berry
MS, CGC
Shodair's Department of Medical Genetics is well
known for evaluating children for possible genetics conditions. Would it
surprise you to hear that in the last year, the team saw 54 adults to discuss
gene testing for hereditary cancer? The Cancer Genetics Program at
Shodair Children's Hospital has grown thanks in part to an appropriation
secured recently through Senator Max Baucus, and through funding
received from the Montana Department of Public Health and Human
Services. Shodair has doubled the number of its genetic counselors from
two to four, and staff has been able to attend an intensive cancer genetics
course offered by the City of Hope National Medical Center.
Cancer consultations have increased markedly at Shodair, both at our
Helena facility and at outreach clinics across the state, up from just a few
several years ago. While most people are seen for a personal and/or family
history of colon cancer or breast and ovarian cancer, there are other types
of cancer (such as specific cancers of the thyroid, kidney, and skin) that
may have a hereditary basis as well. In hereditary cancer syndromes,
specific types of cancer may be seen in combination in an individual, or
collectively in individuals in a family. It is the role of the Genetics team to
sort out who might have an underlying mutation of a single gene which
accounts for cancer in them or family members.
While most cancer is “sporadic,” arising from exposures over a lifetime,
about 10% of all cancer has a hereditary (single mutation) cause. The
genetic mechanism usually involves a gene that would normally suppress
tumor growth not working as well because of a change in the DNA code.
When this happens, cancer may occur at a young age, in multiple people
in the family, or in an unusual form (such as male breast cancer).
Often people want an explanation for why cancer has occurred, and
gene testing may provide that. In addition, the value of a consultation
and testing may go far beyond that by helping families learn who is at
increased risk for cancer and may benefit from early detection strategies,
medication to reduce cancer risk, and preventative surgery. Those found
not to carry a familial cancer gene often experience relief and are pleased
to hear that they cannot pass such a gene to offspring. They may also be
able to avoid expensive screening for cancer which is unnecessary if they
are found not to carry a mutation.
6 Reunion
A cancer
risk assessment
includes:
• Obtaining complete family history and medical records.
• Assessing individual cancer risk.
• Discussion of additional options, including DNA testing,
cancer surveillance, lifestyle changes, and potential preventative therapies.
• Consideration of pros and cons of testing, including potential insurance and employment issues.
• Gene testing, if indicated and desired.
• Evaluation of test results and their implications, including impacts on other family members.
An assessment may be recommended for an individual with:
• A cancer occurring at a younger age than expected for that type of cancer.
• The development of more than one tumor in a single individual.
• Multiple family members with cancer.
• Rare cancers such as childhood cancer or male breast cancer.
Spring 2009
How do you decide if cancer risk counseling is right for you?
For people like Bozeman resident Danyelle Dotson, the choice was easy.
“I wanted to get a cancer risk assessment because both my mom and my grandmother had breast
cancer,” Danyelle explained. “My mom suggested it, because both she and my grandmother had
genetic testing done that showed they were both positive for the BRCA2 gene.”
A breast cancer (BRCA) gene test is a blood test to check for specific changes (mutations) in genes
that help control normal cell growth. Finding changes in these genes, called BRCA1 and BRCA2,
can help determine a person's chance of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
Danyelle turned to Shodair's Genetics Department when she was ready to schedule counseling
and testing. In January 2006, Danyelle traveled to Helena to meet with genetic counselor
Katherine Berry to discuss her family history and get the breast cancer gene test done. The
following month, Danyelle saw Katherine again to receive her test results at one of Shodair's
monthly genetic outreach clinics in Bozeman.
“It was a little overwhelming,” Danyelle, 33, recalls. “I knew I had a 50% chance of having the
BRCA2 gene, but in the back of my mind I hoped it wouldn't happen to me.”
Katherine and Danyelle discussed options that were available to her once the positive diagnosis
was received. Since Danyelle's mother and grandmother both survived breast cancer, she
originally chose vigilant surveillance for any signs of breast cancer, with the possibility of
undergoing surgery when she got older.
Danyelle and Katherine stayed in touch over the next two years via follow-ups over the phone.
“Katherine was able to put me in touch with a couple women locally who were in the same
situation,” Danyelle recounted. “Visiting with them was helpful; it made me feel like I wasn't
the only one.”
Then, in December 2007, Danyelle got a mammogram done, followed by a biospy at the recommendation
of her healthcare provider. In February of this year, she had another mammogram, and
her physician suggested a biopsy on her other breast. “I decided it was time to take a proactive
approach to my healthcare and start considering my surgical options,” Danyelle said.
This spring, Danyelle chose to undergo bilateral prophylactic mastectomies, followed by
immediate implant reconstruction. The busy medical transcriptionist and mom of three young
boys says her decision was right for her, but acknowledged that options are varied and uniquely
personal. Danyelle emphasized, “Every woman's situation is different, and your decisions should
be based on what's right for you. Get as much information as possible, so you're able to make
a good and informed decision.”
Now more than
ever, your gift will
make a profound
difference in the
lives of children
here at Shodair.
The Importance of Giving During
Tough Economic Times
Each day, children across Montana need the help that
only Shodair Children’s Hospital can provide. As families face the stress of
an uncertain economy, children are often affected the most. Their worlds
may be turned upside down and they may exhibit behaviors that are unsafe
to themselves or those around them.
Shodair is here to work with these children, to provide a safe and caring
environment for them to deal with the emotional and mental health issues
they face. Shodair strives to bring healing to the child and strength to
the families.
Now more than ever, Montana’s struggling families with children here at
Shodair need your help. Your contribution helps us provide services to
families who are struggling financially. Each gift, large or small, makes a
huge difference and is an investment in the future of Montana.
Investing in Montana’s children will pay dividends for generations to
come. Unlike other investments, an investment helping to heal Montana’s
children will never decrease in value or cause sleepless nights.
Please consider making an investment today in Montana’s future.
Remember the children at Shodair in your will or estate plan.
Each bequest, large or small, will help future generations of
children receive the healing that Shodair provides.
Montana Flips for Shodair's Kids
on National Pancake Day
IHOP's fourth National Pancake Day
Celebration to support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals was
held on February 24. Montanans showed their support for Shodair
once again by ordering free short stacks of delicious buttermilk
pancakes and making donations to the Children's Miracle Network
in return. As Montana's only Children's Miracle Network hospital,
all the money raised at participating Montana IHOPs (Bozeman,
Helena, Kalispell, and Missoula) stayed in state to provide much
needed care for Shodair's patients.
Nearly $4,500 was donated by IHOP customers in Montana on
Pancake Day, which represents an increase of 65% over last year.
At the Helena IHOP, a pancake stacking contest featuring
Lt. Governor John Bohlinger, Miss Montana Outstanding Teen
2008, Victoria Valentine, and local pre-school children helped kick
things off on a fun note. Local radio personality Barry McNamara of
KMTX AM-FM was on site, broadcasting live in the morning and
encouraging people to stop in and support the event.
In Bozeman, radio personalities Nick Shannon and Nena Johnson from KZMY
103.5 FM were on hand, providing coverage of a pancake stacking contest
and encouraging listeners to come by and make donations. Mrs. Belgrade
2008, Maria Heim, was also present to greet customers and join in the fun.
Kalispell area broadcasters Dan Snyder and Rich Forbis hosted live radio
remote coverage on KERR Country 750 AM and KQRK Power 92,
encouraging listeners to visit the restaurant and make a donation.
The day's events wound down in Missoula with beloved Griz mascot Monte
greeting customers along with KPAX-TV meteorologist Russ Thomas, and
Victoria Valentine, who served pancakes to hungry crowds in the evening.
Also known as Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day has been
celebrated for centuries in England. Strict rules prohibited
eating dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made
to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter, and other dairy
products-hence the name Pancake Tuesday.
National Pancake Day 2009 raised $1.3 million across the
country; funds will benefit children's hospitals throughout
the United States.
Lt. Governor John Bohlinger, Miss Montana
Outstanding Teen Victoria Valentine, Jake
winners, hands down!
Christmas at Shodair—A Tradition of Caring
The holidays can be tough for the
children and adolescents who are in treatment at
Shodair. As in years past, staff and donors gave
generously of their time and funds to make
Christmas a bright one for our patients, who range
in age from four to eighteen.
Preparations began in early November, as staff from
all units gathered wish lists for Santa that identified
items both practical and fun for each patient. Many
individuals, businesses, and civic organizations
familiar with Shodair's mission once again made
Christmas possible for our patients by contributing
gifts of toys, clothing, and quilts. Others raised
funds through employee giving activities, donating
gift cards and cash, allowing Shodair nursing staff to
shop for items just right for each child.
Chris Bates, Director of Nursing at Shodair, said,
“Many of our patients tell us that Christmas at
Shodair is the best one they ever had. Some of
these children have never had a pair of brand new
shoes, or worn anything that hasn't been a
hand-me-down. The looks on their faces on
Christmas morning as they unwrap their presents
is unforgettable.”
to the hospital, delighting the children with an
opportunity to interact with the horses. The
holidays drew to a close with a hayride around
the hospital's grounds for patients when weather
finally permitted.
The generosity of the community had a ripple
effect on the patients, as they looked for ways to
make the holidays brighter for others. West Unit
teacher Sharon Bowker's class made ornaments
and pet chow, selling the items to Shodair staff.
The money raised was donated to the local
Humane Society. Patients also caroled to Shodair
staff throughout the hospital, under the guidance
of Shodair music therapist Cheryl Sobek. Shodair
staff completed the circle of giving by adopting
Christmas families in the community, providing
them with food, clothing, and gifts.
Christmas at Shodair is an amazing effort and no
small undertaking, but an unforgettable tradition
that brings much-needed joy to our patients.
Once the shopping was complete, staff from all
corners of the hospital volunteered their time to
help wrap presents, as did some of the residents
of nearby retirement community Hunter's Pointe.
“It was great to see everyone get into the holiday
spirit,” said Anastasia Burton, Shodair's Community
Relations and Marketing Director. “Over the course
of three days, nearly 50 stockings were filled and
close to 400 presents were wrapped.”
The holidays were also filled with events to bring
the joy of the season to the children. Guest readers
included Governor Brian Schweitzer as well as
Santa himself. Helena's 89th Cavalry once
again helped usher in the New Year with a visit
State's top student athletes
named to play in Shodair's
10th annual Soccer Classic
The Shodair Soccer
Classic will kick off its tenth
season this summer in Helena.
The event begins mid-week
with activities for players, and
culminates with the men's and women's games on
Saturday, July 25 at Nelson Stadium on the Carroll College
campus in Helena.
The Classic features top student athletes from high schools all
across the state. Through a rigorous screening process, over
60 outstanding young men and women are selected to play in
the annual competition. In addition to having been selected
as All-State and All-Conference high school players in Class
AA or A, they have demonstrated academic achievement,
leadership, and citizenship. The Classic also brings together
a talented coaching staff from around the state to guide the
teams and assure top-level competition.
Players and coaches arrive at Carroll College on July 22 to
begin practices and a variety of other activities leading up
to the games. The high school players host aspiring young
soccer all-stars in a free clinic for children ages 5 to 12 on
Friday before the tournament. The event is especially
popular with area youth, with close to 100 young players
typically participating.
The soccer classic is a benefit for Shodair Children's Hospital
and the important work it does for children and adolescents
from communities throughout the state. Shodair is a vital
resource for young Montanans with struggling mental health
challenges, and the state's medical genetics program. Last
year, the hospital provided more than $4 million dollars in
uncompensated care for at-risk children and youth from
around the state.
The hospital is proud to offer this opportunity for gifted youth
to pair athleticism with citizenship in an event where some
of Montana's best young athletes help some of its neediest
children. Financial support generated from events like the
Soccer Classic and the Children's Miracle Network Telethon
help assure that critically-needed services remain available
for young Montanans in need of help.
Therapeutic
Toys Work
Wonders
with
Children
By Christine
Schultz RN
Shodair Children's Unit
Manager Christine Schultz, RN
speaks to the Helena Rotary
Club on March 18 about the
effectiveness of therapeutic toys.
At Shodair, we treat a variety of children. Not
surprisingly, a great majority of the kids we treat at Shodair have varying levels
of sensory integration dysfunction. For example, while other children are
enjoying socializing on the milieu, playground, and cafeteria, the child with
sensory integration dysfunction may feel she has to plug her ears to be able to
handle the noise, and stay away from the other kids because she's afraid of
getting bumped into. Social activities other children find enjoyable can be
extremely uncomfortable for kids with sensory integration issues. Some children
with sensory integration issues may have difficulty tolerating the clothes that all
the kids are wearing, and feel ostracized because he constantly wears ratty old
tennis shoes and sweatpants. Eating with other kids might also be difficult if the
child isn't able to tolerate different food textures or is nauseated by certain
smells. Children who have a high need for sensory seeking can have social
problems because they can't stop touching or banging into the other kids when
playing, or they have difficulty observing the rules of social space, getting right
into someone's face to ask him a question.
We often see social behaviors like anxiety and withdrawal for kids with
sensory integration issues. The child's social behavior may look "odd," "geeky,"
"immature," or "goofy." Trouble with transitions, from one activity to the next or
one mind set to the next (such as alert to calm, sleeping to fully awake) are
another sign that a child is struggling with sensory integration issues. Some
kids will become angry, agitated, and defensive about their sensory integration
dysfunction and are seen as "problem" kids with "an attitude." On the other
hand, a child who is a 'sensory seeker' can be too physical with other children.
A child who craves tactile input may constantly touch other children to the point
of irritation. A child, who has difficulty with body awareness, may lean against
or frequently bump into other children.
The most crucial thing a parents and caregivers can do is to acquire
interventions to help these children be able to get the sensory input they need.
Life is a sensory event and there will often be times when the sensory input most
of us take for granted and don't even notice will greatly affect the kids we work
with. Our job is to assess each child's sensory integration needs and teach him
how he can meet his needs in a socially acceptable, safe manner.
At Shodair, we have a variety of therapeutic toys that provide sensory input and
integration. These includes thing such as weighted blankets, weighted lap pads,
shoulder wraps, pea pods, vibro love bugs, vibrating back massagers, bell balls,
bilibos, and surgical brushes. When working with a child who has sensory
integration issues, lying with the weighted blanket provides them with
tactile stimulation and can be very effective in reducing aggression and
calming the child. If a child has trouble staying in their seat during
school they may wear a weighted lap pad or shoulder wrap. These
help provide the sensory input necessary to keep them in their seat
long enough to complete academic work. Over time, the children
are able to ask for a therapeutic toy when agitated or upset to help
them calm without the help of staff. Parents and public schools have
purchased therapeutic toys for kids after discharge from Shodair to
continue to provide the sensory input the child needs while still being
able to function adaptively in society.
Asian Cultures Week Comes
to Shodair's West Unit
For the second year, Asian Cultures Week came to
Shodair's West Unit this spring. Organized by West
Unit teacher Joe Thompson, the week was full of
a variety of activities to give middle-school aged
students an understanding of Asian cultures through
a mix of different experiences.
“We do Asian Cultures Week as part of a tradition,
and as a supplement to our regular education,”
Joe said. “We like blending the language with
the social studies aspect, and it's a great way to
explore diversity.”
One of the week's highlights was a gift from the
people of the Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto,
which is Montana's sister-state. The prefecture's
representative, Kizuku Matsunaga, and his wife,
Yoriko, presented the hospital with 1,000 paper
cranes, saying, “One-thousand origami cranes are
the symbol of recovery from illness or injury, and
also represent longevity and peace. These cranes
come with the prayers of the people of
Japan for the speedy recovery of the
patients at Shodair.”
The week's events also included Haiku poetry
lessons, history presentations, an Aikido
demonstration, and an anime´ movie of a
Japanese folk tale.
The Matsunagas also demonstrated
origami paper folding and sushi
cooking for the patients on West.
Their visit to Shodair was one of their
last official duties representing Japan,
as Kumamoto Plaza has been closed
due to budget constraints. The
Matsunagas returned home to Japan
in April.
Shodair Receives State
Award for Healthcare
Excellence
Last November, Shodair Children's Hospital was
proud to receive a Certificate of Healthcare
Excellence from the Montana Department of
Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) in
recognition of our commitment to being a tobacco
free medical campus. Shodair was one of sixteen
facilities across Montana that has implemented
tobacco free campus policies which work to
provide clean air for their staff and visitors.
New Signage
Installed at Shodair
Shodair has installed a series of illuminated signs
on campus in order to ease way finding for
ambulance drivers, patients' families, and other
visitors. Additionally, the signage will highten
Shodair's location and visibility in the Helena
community. The project will be finished this spring,
when illuminated letters are to be installed above
the Acute Unit entrance.
The main sign (pictured above) features a marquee
system which can be updated to promote hospital
events such as the annual Children's Miracle
Network telethon, and to welcome tour groups.
Later this year, the hospital's internal signage will be
reviewed, with the goal of making Shodair more
welcoming and easier to navigate for visitors and
new employees.
ABOVE: Workers from YESCO Sign Company carefully
install the pediment of the new signage located at
Shodair's main entrance. The sign was assembled in
three parts, and uses energy efficient lighting. YESCO
generously donated a portion of the signage project
to Shodair.
The award for Healthcare
Excellence was presented by
Gail Beckner of the Lewis and
Clark County Tobacco
Prevention Program to Shodair
Administrator Jack Casey.
“Shodair Children's Hospital
has shown vision and
leadership in establishing a
tobacco free campus that
provides a safe and healthy
environment for patients,
employees, and visitors,”
Beckner said. She added,
“Many hospitals and health
organizations across the nation
have instituted tobacco free
Shodair Administrator
Excellence from
Tobacco Use Prevention
Specialist Gail Beckner.
policies to address tobacco use, the number one
cause of preventable death in the U.S.”
Shodair went tobacco free several years ago to
protect the health of the children and families who
are at the hospital. “This policy eliminates all
exposure to secondhand smoke, encourages
tobacco users to quit, and sends a clear message that
the use of tobacco does not support good health,”
Casey said. In a letter accompanying the award
certificate, Dr. Steven Helgerson, the State Medical
Officer at the Montana DPHHS, wrote, “The toll
from tobacco use is great. Every year, over 1,500
Montanans die prematurely of tobacco related
diseases and many more suffer illness and disability.
Through your leadership on this major public health
issue, more Montanans will enjoy improved health
and quality of life.”
Shodair Goes Green!
This spring, Shodair's Maintenance Department
started a recycling program for Shodair employees.
A number of different items are now recycled,
including cardboard, newspaper, office paper,
catalogs, magazines, phone books, plastics, and
aluminum and tin cans.
“While Shodair will not make any money
from recycling, it's the right thing to do for
the environment,” said Dave Bossell, Chief
Maintenance Engineer. Dave added that the
program will operate in conjunction with
Helena's S.A.V.E. (Student Advocates for
SHODAIR
SPOTLIGHT
Nearly 250 people work at Shodair,
each of them performing a variety of functions. Some
work in positions with more visibility to the public,
such as seeing patients at the hospital's many genetic
outreach clinics across the state, or perhaps giving
presentations about Shodair's programs and services
to civic groups. Many other dedicated employees
work behind the scenes, making sure the hospital's
patients eat nutritious meals or learn to express
themselves through recreation therapy.
Dave and Linda Bossell are two of the people
whose work ensures Shodair's continued ability to
serve the needs of Montanans. Dave is a 21-year
veteran employee whose role as Chief Maintenance
Engineer encompasses a range of responsibilities to
keep Shodair's 90,000 square foot facility running
smoothly. He supervises a staff of twelve, who
maintain the interior and exterior of the building,
and provide housekeeping and laundry services to
the hospital's patients.
Linda is Shodair's Payroll and Accounts Payable
Clerk, a position she's held for nearly one dozen
years. Linda says, “I enjoy the people here and the
work that I do, especially the payroll aspect of my
job. I like to see the satisfaction our employees have
of doing good work and getting paid for it.”
The Bossells were both raised in Helena and
attended Helena High School. They met when Linda
was a senior, and married in 1973. Dave studied
electrical engineering in college for one year, and
then started working in his dad's construction
company, building many homes in the Helena area.
Prior to working at Shodair, Linda was an office
manager for a local dermatologist for many years
until the physician retired.
Dave & Linda Bossell
will continue to be a part of children's lives—that
means a lot to me.” Linda echoes that sentiment,
saying, “I'm proud to work at Shodair, seeing our
staff help kids on the road to recovery so they can
lead healthy, normal lives.”
Being married and working together can present
certain challenges, but the Bossells have found
ways over the years that enable them to keep
home and office separate. “Dave says, “We try
to keep things at work very professional, and
understand that sometimes our positions require
us to keep certain information confidential.”
Linda emphasizes, “Work stays at work, and
home stays at home.”
When they are not at Shodair, the Bossells
spend their leisure time being outside as much as
they can. Linda loves horses, and owns four of
them. Dave enjoys all the hunting and fishing
opportunities the region has to offer. The couple
also enjoys spending time with their daughter,
Stephanie, and their two grandchildren, ages
12 and 5.
Shodair appreciates the Bossells for all the work
they do behind the scenes to make sure the
hospital runs smoothly for our business partners,
staff, and patients.
Thank you,
Dave and Linda!
While Dave and Linda bring very different skills
to Shodair, they share a love of children and an
appreciation of the hospital's history and mission.
“It's nice to be part of a facility that's been here for
over 100 years,” Dave says. “I hope that what we do
Ruth Durnford:
Shodair Baby
It was July 1923 and in the small
Bitterroot community of Three Mile, Montana,
the Mabbott family wanted to adopt a baby boy
to add to their family.
Frank and Charlotte,
both in their fifties, had
previously adopted
several children, and so
they contacted Montana
Childrens’ Home and
Hospital again, and
picked out a baby to
adopt. When they arrived
in Helena to pick up the
baby boy, they were told
about a newborn baby
girl that probably
wouldn’t live much
longer unless she
received personal care.
Unwilling to see this
child die, Frank and
Charlotte decided to
adopt this baby girl and
care for her. Every day,
Frank hitched up the
family horse and buggy and traveled
18 miles to Stevensville to get milk so
little Ruth would get better and grow
into a healthy child.
Growing up on the family farm and
playing in the apple and cherry
orchards, Ruth enjoyed the love and
support of her family and eventually became a
registered nurse. She then trained to become a
pediatric nurse and moved to Spokane,
Washington, where
she became the nursing
supervisor of the
orthopedic and
pediatric floor at
Sacred Heart Hospital.
Ruth and her husband
moved back to
Montana, finally settling
in Butte, where they
raised three children
of their own.
Ruth has long
remembered the role
Shodair played in her
life. When asked her
feelings about her
experience, Ruth said
“My life has certainly
been blessed and I’m
just so honored to have
been a part of what is
now Shodair Children’s
Hospital. We’ve donated throughout
the years and know first hand the
wonderful work Shodair does for the
children of Montana.”
Ruth and her brother Jack pose on the
porch of the family home in 1929.
Please join Ruth in supporting the children at Shodair with your special gift
or by naming Shodair in your will or estate plan.
Now more than ever, your gift will make a profound difference
in the lives of children here at Shodair.
