Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Next year, June 10 marks the 100th anniversary of President
William Howard Taft's recommendation to Congress that it
propose an amendment to the Constitution for the purpose of
beginning the income tax and the corporate profit tax. How
many of us will be planning big parties and celebrations on June
10? Within a century, we have come to accept that taxes are a
part of life, and though we may grumble about them, they will
still be taken from us each payday. But I doubt even President
Taft could imagine the tax code as it exists today!
From the time we were small, we were told that we were
created in God's image. And we have heard Jesus tell us that
God is love; therefore, it goes logically that we are love, too.
When Jesus was asked if he thought it was lawful to pay taxes
to Caesar, he deftly explained that Caesar's face was on the
coin, therefore it belonged to the Roman ruler. But he also said
for us to give to God what is God's; in this statement, he is
referring to the love in our hearts and that we are stamped in his
image. Thus, we belong to God, and in recognizing the limits of
worldly possessions, we keep only love and share it freely.
From the start of his public ministry, Jesus was up against
the ropes. Pharisees and certain loyalists to King Herod
conspired to destroy him, primarily because of his own
interpretation of religious laws and his insistence on sharing
meals with sinners and tax collectors (CCC 574). But even trick
questions such as the lawfulness of a Roman tax couldn't sway
his truthful answers; God very powerfully yet very simply asks
us to put goodness and love of each other first and foremost in
our lives, and everything else will take care of itself.

WHAT IS WORLD MISSION
SUNDAY?
World Mission Sunday,
organized by the Propagation of
the Faith, is a day set aside for
Catholics worldwide to recommit
themselves to the Church's
missionary activity through prayer
and sacrifice.
Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the
next-to-last Sunday in October. As described by Pope John
Paul II, World Mission Sunday is "an important day in the
life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an
offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for
all the missions of the world" (see Redemptoris Missio 81).
Pope John Paul II has also spoken of the Propagation of
the Faith's General Fund of support, calling this a "central
fund of solidarity."
In a message delivered on a recent World Mission
Sunday, the Pope said: "The offerings that will be collected
[on World Mission Sunday] are destined for a common fund
of solidarity distributed, in the Pope's name, by the Society
for the Propagation of the Faith among the missions and
missionaries of the entire world."
Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the
Missions grow - as new dioceses are formed, as new
seminaries are opened because of the growing number of
young men hearing Christ's call to follow Him as priests, as
areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and
as other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the
message of Christ and His Church.
That is why the involvement and commitment of Catholics
from around the world is so urgently needed. Offerings from
Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday
and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to the
Propagation of the Faith worldwide.
Mission dioceses - about 1,100 at this time - receive
regular annual assistance from the funds collected.
In addition, these mission dioceses submit requests to the
Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples for
assistance, among other needs, for catechetical programs,
seminaries, the work of Religious Communities, for
communication and transportation needs, and for the
building of chapels, churches, orphanages and schools.
These needs are matched with the funds gathered in
each year. The world's national directors of the Propagation
of the Faith vote on these requests, matching the funds
available with the greatest needs. These funds are then
distributed, in their entirety, to mission dioceses throughout
the world.
I know that you have been very generous recently in
donating to those who have been devastated by the floods
in our community. However, if you can find it in your heart
to be generous in the special collection for the Propagation
of the Faith on this World Mission Sunday, I know that it
would be deeply appreciated and that the funds would be
put to good use in proclaiming the Good News throughout
this world of ours.

Do you know their campaign promises?
Have you thought prayerfully for whom you should vote?
Have you taken the time to educate yourself on the
issues?
These are all very important questions — questions that
every person should be asking in preparation for the
elections next month.
The Church does not endorse any candidate or party, but
it does its best to remind all Catholics that they have a
responsibility to inform themselves on the issues and to
take an active part in the election process.
Make sure that you do just that. Get yourself ready and,
on Election Day, get out and vote!
ANNUAL DIOCESAN CONVOCATION
This week, the priests of the Diocese of Gary will
attend their annual convocation.
The topic will focus on implementing the vision of the
rites of Christian Initiation. Fr. Richard Fragomeni, Eliot
Kapitan, and Fr. Timothy Piasecki will be our
presenters.
While we are gone, the Carmelite Fathers will be
celebrating the daily 6:30 a.m. Mass and Fr. Barry Evers
will be celebrating the daily 8:30 a.m. Mass.
Please keep all of us in your prayers as we continue
to strive to serve you better.

To Those That Were Impacted By The Flood:
We know that no one will be made whole even if they participate in all of the different grants,
insurance and other financial assistance that are currently available. No one can return you to the
home and monetary position that you were at on September 13 th , but your parish wants to help to
the extent it can.
We have over 250 St. Thomas More parish families affected by the flood. Some of those families
received a few inches and needed to remove carpeting. Many had basements and main floors
flooded and have lost everything.
As you know, we have been accepting monetary donations for the St. Thomas More Relief Fund.
The first wave of assistance will be directed to our parishioners. Depending on how much more
money we are able to collect in the months to come, we will look to help other flood victims in the
town of Munster and possibly assist those parishioners that have a greater need.
At this time, we will pay up to $500 in bills for each parishioner household. The checks need to be
made payable to a company. No checks can be written to individuals.
The guidelines are as follows:
1) You must be a registered active Parishioner of St. Thomas More
2) You must have a FEMA number
3) You must live in the evacuated flood zone.
4) You must mail or bring the attached application to the Parish Office or put in the collection
basket at church by Monday, October 20 th .
5) You must attach a bill that we can pay for you. It can be for rent, mortgage payment,
furnace, water heater, clothing, household items etc.) We will cut a check for your credit
card company if you placed these items on your charge card already and you provide
supporting detail.
We will process forms and start issuing checks after October 20 th . The checks will be made
payable to the company but will be mailed to you at the address listed on the form. We will process
applications on a first come first served basis and will continue until the relief fund runs out.
If you had minimal damage or adequate insurance, we ask that you not apply so that those with
greater need can get the assistance. Only you know your financial situation. If you need help,
however, please apply.
Make sure you list a current phone number on the application so we can contact you if we have any
questions.

Donations of cash will be accepted until noon on October 24th.

November 22nd, 2008. Tickets for all of the performances
can be purchased at the door. Everyone is welcome.

A big thank you to our many school families
and parishioners who have generously
contributed their time and resources to aid
the numerous residents in our area whose
lives have been drastically affected by last
month’s flooding.
With your help, we have been able to assist
residents with countless hours of clean-up
manpower, going door-to-door delivering
hundreds of bagged lunches, and raising
thousands of dollars to add to the STM Relief
Fund. Proceeds of nearly $1000 from the
STMS Athletics Bake Sale and funds from
last week’s Walk-A-thon will also be added
to the Fund.

Liturgy of Remembrance
“November is a special time of year for the
Roman Catholic Church. It commemorates
those who have gone before us in special ways
as it celebrates the Feast of All Saints and All
Souls. After the Feast of All Souls (November
2 nd ) the remainder of the month is dedicated to
remembering the faithful departed.
Remembering our loved ones is so very
important to us. When we take the time to bring
them to mind, we experience a multitude of
feelings that help lead us to come to terms with
our grief and to bring us healing.
The entire parish community of St. Thomas
More invites you to participate in a Liturgy of
Remembrance on All Souls Day – Sunday,
November 2 nd at 7:00 p.m.”
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
Thanks and blessings for all you have
contributed to restock our SVDP pantry either
by donation of non-perishable items or
monetary gifts. STM parishioners have always
answered God's call to help people in need.
The last Sunday of the month has been
designated as "SVDP Pantry Sunday" to help
with replenishing non-perishable items .If you
can bring an item or two next Sunday it will be
greatly appreciated.
The last Sunday in November is the 30th.....
which is three days after Thanksgiving. We
will be stocking Thanksgiving baskets on
Friday, November 21. Between now and
November 21, we are asking parishioners to
donate the following:
Canned Sweet Potatoes (preferably medium
sized cans); Cranberry Sauce, Turkey Stuffing,
Turkey Gravy, Cake Mixes; Flour, and Sugar,
Other items needed: Toilet Paper, Paper
Towels and Bar, Laundry and Dish Soaps.
SENIOR CITIZEN CLUB LUNCHEON
On Monday, October 20 th , our members will
gather for lunch at the China Buffet
Restaurant, 11 a.m. The address is 1640
Indianapolis in Schererville, IN. This is on the
corner of Route 30 and Indianapolis Blvd. We
hope to see you then for more fun and good
conversation. Guests are always welcome…
just come and enjoy!!
Holy Name News
Attention all members! Our next meeting will
take place on Monday, October 20th in the
Cafeteria. The meeting starts at 7:30 pm, come
early at 7:00 pm for the praying of the rosary.
Video and pizza/refreshments will conclude the
meeting. Fr. John Corapi’s latest video “Since
You Asked” will start our video series. New
members welcome!
