Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Ti<strong>me</strong><br />

Next year, June 10 marks <strong>the</strong> 100th anniversary of President<br />

Willi<strong>am</strong> Howard Taft's recom<strong>me</strong>ndation to Congress that it<br />

propose an <strong>am</strong>end<strong>me</strong>nt to <strong>the</strong> Constitution for <strong>the</strong> purpose of<br />

beginning <strong>the</strong> inco<strong>me</strong> tax <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> corporate profit tax. How<br />

many of us will be planning big parties <strong>and</strong> celebrations on June<br />

10? Within a century, we have co<strong>me</strong> to accept that taxes are a<br />

part of life, <strong>and</strong> though we may grumble about <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y will<br />

still be taken from us each payday. But I doubt even President<br />

Taft could imagine <strong>the</strong> tax code as it ex<strong>is</strong>ts today!<br />

From <strong>the</strong> ti<strong>me</strong> we were small, we were told that we were<br />

created in <strong>God</strong>'s image. And we have heard Jesus tell us that<br />

<strong>God</strong> <strong>is</strong> love; <strong>the</strong>refore, it goes logically that we are love, too.<br />

When Jesus was asked if he thought it was lawful to pay taxes<br />

to Caesar, he deftly explained that Caesar's face was on <strong>the</strong><br />

coin, <strong>the</strong>refore it belonged to <strong>the</strong> Roman ruler. But he also said<br />

for us to give to <strong>God</strong> what <strong>is</strong> <strong>God</strong>'s; in th<strong>is</strong> state<strong>me</strong>nt, he <strong>is</strong><br />

referring to <strong>the</strong> love in our hearts <strong>and</strong> that we are st<strong>am</strong>ped in h<strong>is</strong><br />

image. Thus, we belong to <strong>God</strong>, <strong>and</strong> in recognizing <strong>the</strong> limits of<br />

worldly possessions, we keep only love <strong>and</strong> share it freely.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> start of h<strong>is</strong> public min<strong>is</strong>try, Jesus was up against<br />

<strong>the</strong> ropes. Phar<strong>is</strong>ees <strong>and</strong> certain loyal<strong>is</strong>ts to King Herod<br />

conspired to destroy him, primarily because of h<strong>is</strong> own<br />

interpretation of religious laws <strong>and</strong> h<strong>is</strong> ins<strong>is</strong>tence on sharing<br />

<strong>me</strong>als with sinners <strong>and</strong> tax collectors (CCC 574). But even trick<br />

questions such as <strong>the</strong> lawfulness of a Roman tax couldn't sway<br />

h<strong>is</strong> truthful answers; <strong>God</strong> very powerfully yet very simply asks<br />

us to put goodness <strong>and</strong> love of each o<strong>the</strong>r first <strong>and</strong> foremost in<br />

our lives, <strong>and</strong> everything else will take care of itself.<br />

WHAT IS WORLD MISSION<br />

SUNDAY?<br />

World M<strong>is</strong>sion Sunday,<br />

organized by <strong>the</strong> Propagation of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Faith, <strong>is</strong> a day set aside for<br />

Catholics worldwide to recommit<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong> Church's<br />

m<strong>is</strong>sionary activity through prayer<br />

<strong>and</strong> sacrifice.<br />

Annually, World M<strong>is</strong>sion Sunday <strong>is</strong> celebrated on <strong>the</strong><br />

next-to-last Sunday in October. As described by Pope John<br />

Paul II, World M<strong>is</strong>sion Sunday <strong>is</strong> "an important day in <strong>the</strong><br />

life of <strong>the</strong> Church because it teaches how to give: as an<br />

offering made to <strong>God</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>tic celebration <strong>and</strong> for<br />

all <strong>the</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sions of <strong>the</strong> world" (see Redemptor<strong>is</strong> M<strong>is</strong>sio 81).<br />

Pope John Paul II has also spoken of <strong>the</strong> Propagation of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Faith's General Fund of support, calling th<strong>is</strong> a "central<br />

fund of solidarity."<br />

In a <strong>me</strong>ssage delivered on a recent World M<strong>is</strong>sion<br />

Sunday, <strong>the</strong> Pope said: "The offerings that will be collected<br />

[on World M<strong>is</strong>sion Sunday] are destined for a common fund<br />

of solidarity d<strong>is</strong>tributed, in <strong>the</strong> Pope's n<strong>am</strong>e, by <strong>the</strong> Society<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Propagation of <strong>the</strong> Faith <strong>am</strong>ong <strong>the</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sions <strong>and</strong><br />

m<strong>is</strong>sionaries of <strong>the</strong> entire world."<br />

Every year <strong>the</strong> needs of <strong>the</strong> Catholic Church in <strong>the</strong><br />

M<strong>is</strong>sions grow - as new dioceses are for<strong>me</strong>d, as new<br />

seminaries are opened because of <strong>the</strong> growing number of<br />

young <strong>me</strong>n hearing Chr<strong>is</strong>t's call to follow Him as priests, as<br />

areas devastated by war or natural d<strong>is</strong>aster are rebuilt, <strong>and</strong><br />

as o<strong>the</strong>r areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>me</strong>ssage of Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>and</strong> H<strong>is</strong> Church.<br />

That <strong>is</strong> why <strong>the</strong> involve<strong>me</strong>nt <strong>and</strong> commit<strong>me</strong>nt of Catholics<br />

from around <strong>the</strong> world <strong>is</strong> so urgently needed. Offerings from<br />

Catholics in <strong>the</strong> United States, on World M<strong>is</strong>sion Sunday<br />

<strong>and</strong> throughout <strong>the</strong> year, are combined with offerings to <strong>the</strong><br />

Propagation of <strong>the</strong> Faith worldwide.<br />

M<strong>is</strong>sion dioceses - about 1,100 at th<strong>is</strong> ti<strong>me</strong> - receive<br />

regular annual ass<strong>is</strong>tance from <strong>the</strong> funds collected.<br />

In addition, <strong>the</strong>se m<strong>is</strong>sion dioceses submit requests to <strong>the</strong><br />

Congregation for <strong>the</strong> Evangelization of Peoples for<br />

ass<strong>is</strong>tance, <strong>am</strong>ong o<strong>the</strong>r needs, for catechetical progr<strong>am</strong>s,<br />

seminaries, <strong>the</strong> work of Religious Communities, for<br />

communication <strong>and</strong> transportation needs, <strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong><br />

building of chapels, churches, orphanages <strong>and</strong> schools.<br />

These needs are matched with <strong>the</strong> funds ga<strong>the</strong>red in<br />

each year. The world's national directors of <strong>the</strong> Propagation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Faith vote on <strong>the</strong>se requests, matching <strong>the</strong> funds<br />

available with <strong>the</strong> greatest needs. These funds are <strong>the</strong>n<br />

d<strong>is</strong>tributed, in <strong>the</strong>ir entirety, to m<strong>is</strong>sion dioceses throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> world.<br />

I k<strong>no</strong>w that you have been very generous recently in<br />

donating to those who have been devastated by <strong>the</strong> floods<br />

in our community. However, if you can find it in your heart<br />

to be generous in <strong>the</strong> special collection for <strong>the</strong> Propagation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Faith on th<strong>is</strong> World M<strong>is</strong>sion Sunday, I k<strong>no</strong>w that it<br />

would be deeply appreciated <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> funds would be<br />

put to good use in proclaiming <strong>the</strong> Good News throughout<br />

th<strong>is</strong> world of ours.<br />

<strong>God</strong> bless you for your generosity!<br />

Do you k<strong>no</strong>w who <strong>the</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idates are in <strong>the</strong> upcoming<br />

election?<br />

Do you k<strong>no</strong>w <strong>the</strong>ir voting track record on <strong>is</strong>sues?<br />

Do you k<strong>no</strong>w <strong>the</strong>ir c<strong>am</strong>paign prom<strong>is</strong>es?<br />

Have you thought prayerfully for whom you should vote?<br />

Have you taken <strong>the</strong> ti<strong>me</strong> to educate yourself on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>is</strong>sues?<br />

These are all very important questions — questions that<br />

every person should be asking in preparation for <strong>the</strong><br />

elections next month.<br />

The Church does <strong>no</strong>t endorse any c<strong>and</strong>idate or party, but<br />

it does its best to remind all Catholics that <strong>the</strong>y have a<br />

responsibility to inform <strong>the</strong>mselves on <strong>the</strong> <strong>is</strong>sues <strong>and</strong> to<br />

take an active part in <strong>the</strong> election process.<br />

Make sure that you do just that. Get yourself ready <strong>and</strong>,<br />

on Election Day, get out <strong>and</strong> vote!<br />

To Those That Were Impacted By The Flood:<br />

We k<strong>no</strong>w that <strong>no</strong> one will be made whole even if <strong>the</strong>y participate in all of <strong>the</strong> different grants,<br />

insurance <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r financial ass<strong>is</strong>tance that are currently available. No one can return you to <strong>the</strong><br />

ho<strong>me</strong> <strong>and</strong> monetary position that you were at on September 13 th , but your par<strong>is</strong>h wants to help to<br />

<strong>the</strong> extent it can.<br />

We have over 250 St. Thomas More par<strong>is</strong>h f<strong>am</strong>ilies affected by <strong>the</strong> flood. So<strong>me</strong> of those f<strong>am</strong>ilies<br />

received a few inches <strong>and</strong> needed to remove carpeting. Many had base<strong>me</strong>nts <strong>and</strong> main floors<br />

flooded <strong>and</strong> have lost everything.<br />

As you k<strong>no</strong>w, we have been accepting monetary donations for <strong>the</strong> St. Thomas More Relief Fund.<br />

The first wave of ass<strong>is</strong>tance will be directed to our par<strong>is</strong>hioners. Depending on how much more<br />

money we are able to collect in <strong>the</strong> months to co<strong>me</strong>, we will look to help o<strong>the</strong>r flood victims in <strong>the</strong><br />

town of Munster <strong>and</strong> possibly ass<strong>is</strong>t those par<strong>is</strong>hioners that have a greater need.<br />

At th<strong>is</strong> ti<strong>me</strong>, we will pay up to $500 in bills for each par<strong>is</strong>hioner household. The checks need to be<br />

made payable to a company. No checks can be written to individuals.<br />

The guidelines are as follows:<br />

1) You must be a reg<strong>is</strong>tered active Par<strong>is</strong>hioner of St. Thomas More<br />

2) You must have a FEMA number<br />

3) You must live in <strong>the</strong> evacuated flood zone.<br />

4) You must mail or bring <strong>the</strong> attached application to <strong>the</strong> Par<strong>is</strong>h Office or put in <strong>the</strong> collection<br />

basket at church by Monday, October 20 th .<br />

5) You must attach a bill that we can pay for you. <strong>It</strong> can be for rent, mortgage pay<strong>me</strong>nt,<br />

furnace, water heater, clothing, household items etc.) We will cut a check for your credit<br />

card company if you placed <strong>the</strong>se items on your charge card already <strong>and</strong> you provide<br />

supporting detail.<br />

We will process forms <strong>and</strong> start <strong>is</strong>suing checks after October 20 th . The checks will be made<br />

payable to <strong>the</strong> company but will be mailed to you at <strong>the</strong> address l<strong>is</strong>ted on <strong>the</strong> form. We will process<br />

applications on a first co<strong>me</strong> first served bas<strong>is</strong> <strong>and</strong> will continue until <strong>the</strong> relief fund runs out.<br />

If you had minimal d<strong>am</strong>age or adequate insurance, we ask that you <strong>no</strong>t apply so that those with<br />

greater need can get <strong>the</strong> ass<strong>is</strong>tance. Only you k<strong>no</strong>w your financial situation. If you need help,<br />

however, please apply.<br />

Make sure you l<strong>is</strong>t a current phone number on <strong>the</strong> application so we can contact you if we have any<br />

questions.<br />

<strong>God</strong> bless you.<br />
