Checking our pulse — 

both here and in our community 

Improving the health of the community is central to our mission as a 

nonprofit health-care provider. For us, that means being here for patients 

in times of illness. But it’s also about helping people stay healthy and manage 

chronic conditions. 

We promote wellness and prevention in the community through many 

different partnerships and initiatives. One that I’m especially proud of is a 

unique partnership between Swedish and the Northwest African American 

Museum. Together, we are working to inform the local African-American 

community about five diseases that disproportionately 

affect this population: breast cancer, diabetes, 

heart disease, HIV/AIDS, and premature and lowweight 

births. 

In collaboration with our team and with support 

from other sponsors, the museum has developed a 

compelling interactive exhibit, “Checking our Pulse”, 

that helps drive home the need to prevent and/or 

manage these types of conditions. It also includes 

a history of African-American physicians and healthcare 

professionals in Seattle, including Swedish’s chief medical officer 

John Vassall, M.D., and breast surgeon Pat Dawson, M.D., Ph.D. By sharing 

this history, we hope to inspire local African-American youths to pursue 

medicine and health-care as a profession. 

It’s an important exhibit that’s received excellent reviews. I encourage 

all of you to take the time to see and experience it. You can find details at 

the museum’s web site, www.naamnw.org. It runs now through June. 

One of the conditions highlighted in the exhibit is heart disease. Though 

it disproportionately affects African Americans, it’s something everyone in 

our community needs to be aware of. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in 

the United States, with more than 1.1 million Americans suffering heart 

attacks each year. 

The Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute is dedicated to the treatment 

and research of heart disease and has assembled a team of renowned cardiologists 

and cardiac surgeons to serve people facing the condition. The 

team is advancing a number of important initiatives, including a collective 

effort to develop a comprehensive program for managing heart failure. 

You can read more about the Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute in 

this issue of IMPACT.

Swedish brings 

school-based 

health care 

to Ballard 

High School

Swedish opens two new ERs and 

outpatient centers in Redmond and Mill Creek 

Expanding health care system treats patients where they live and work. 

Swedish’s new freestanding emergency 

rooms (ERs) and outpatient 

centers in Redmond and Mill Creek 

are now open. Thousands of people 

turned out for the grand opening events 

for each facility, which included tours, fun 

family activities and a chance to meet the 

doctors and staff. 

The Redmond campus, located at 

18100 N.E. Union Hill Road, officially 

opened on Dec. 21. The 

Mill Creek campus, 

located just off I-5 at 

13020 Meridian Ave. S. 

in the south Everett area, 

opened on Feb. 17. 

“These facilities are 

part of a larger plan to 

bring health care closer 

to patients in their own communities,” 

said Kevin Brown, Swedish senior vice president 

and chief administrative officer. “We 

are rapidly transforming from a downtown 

‘hospital’ to a community-based health-care 

system that treats patients where they live and 

work, instead of making them come to us.” 

Each of these facilities offers: 

– A full-service ER (open 24/7) 

– An advanced diagnostic imaging 

center (including X-ray, mammography, 

ultrasound, CT scan and MRI) 

– An on-site laboratory 

– A primary-care clinic, offering care 

for the whole family 

– Specialty physician offices 

– A fully integrated electronic health 

record system

and registration process that results in 

queuing and frequently long ER wait times. 

The ERs at both facilities are patterned 

after the highly successful model Swedish 

developed in Issaquah. Opened in March 

2005, the Issaquah facility was the first 

freestanding ER in the region and was 

immediately embraced by the community 

for bringing emergency medical care 

closer to home. 

For the past two years, the Swedish/ 

Issaquah ER received the coveted Summit 

Award by Press Ganey Associates — the 

health-care satisfaction industry’s most 

prestigious mark of achievement — for 

maintaining patient satisfaction scores in the 

95th percentile or above for at least three years. 

The new Redmond and Mill Creek ERs 

are able to immediately treat patients 

suffering from severe lacerations or burns, 

broken bones, sports injuries, allergic 

reactions, food poisoning, 

work-related injuries and 

many other conditions 

(always call 9-1-1 in a medical 

emergency). 

All providers at Swedish/ 

Redmond and Swedish/ 

Mill Creek have access 

to Epic, Swedish’s secure 

electronic health record system, so vital 

information can be easily conveyed among 

a patient’s authorized caregivers. The system 

provides a common platform for clinicians 

to share medical documentation, test results, 

prescriptions — and information can 

be sent to any Epic facility where a patient 

is treated. i

School-based medical care 

helps teens succeed in the 

classroom and beyond. 

The Ballard Teen Health Center, 

a Swedish clinic based at Ballard 

High School, is funded and operated 

through a partnership between 

Swedish, Seattle Schools, Seattle-King 

County Public Health, and the Families 

and Education Levy. The clinic offers 

confidential primary-care and mentalhealth 

services at no charge to all 1,650 

students at Ballard High School. 

Teens visit the center for concerns 

ranging from illnesses and injuries to 

confidential mental-health counseling, 

immunizations and STD testing. The 

center, which was started by Swedish 

in 2002, also provides smoking-cessation 

programs, nutrition and exercise counseling, 

general health information, and 

school-wide health promotion and classroom 

presentations. 

The official mission of the Ballard Teen 

Health Center is to “meet the physical 

and mental health needs of the students 

in a nurturing environment that fosters 

the well-being of the Ballard High School 

community, so students are safe, healthy, 

and ready to learn.” A multitude of Seattle

viders participate in this school-based 

health program. Ballard High School was 

a natural fit for Swedish due to its proximity 

to the Swedish/Ballard campus as 

well as Swedish’s established ties to the 

Ballard community. 

School-based medical care helps students 

avoid health-related absences and 

get support to succeed in the classroom. 

“This is just one of the ways that Swedish 

assists people of all ages in our community, 

as well as encourages teens to take ownership 

of their health,” says Sara Rigel, 

manager of Patient/Family Education and 

Community Health, whose department 

oversees the Ballard Teen Health Center. 

During the 2009-2010 school year, 

the center had more than 2,300 visits 

(both mental health and primary care). 

It has been such a success that Rigel hopes 

to develop similar programs at other 

high schools. i 

The Ballard Teen Health Center is part of a 14-clinic network in the Seattle Public Schools. The Families and Education Levy 

covers 65 percent of the program’s operating budget, with the remainder funded by Swedish, corporate partnerships, and

Blood program offers patients 

options to traditional tranfusions

he use of blood conservation 

and management 

techniques in our country’s 

hospitals is a relatively new 

concept: As recently as the late 

1990’s, transfusions were 

commonplace during surgery, 

particularly in orthopedic and 

cardiac procedures. Few medical 

centers offered bloodless 

programs or transfusion alternatives, 

and patients who did 

seek them were often motivated 

by religious reasons 

— Jehovah’s Witnesses, for 

example, do not allow the 

use of blood transfusions in 

their care. 

Over the past decade, the 

request for blood transfusion 

alternatives has become 

more mainstream among 

patients, yet only a small percentage of hospitals offer options — 

there are only about 150 hospital blood management programs 

nationally. Swedish has long offered bloodless alternatives for 

patients who require or request medical care 

Despite the fact that patient requests for blood transfusion alternatives have grown, 

few hospitals nationally offer different options to traditional methods. 

without blood products, but in 2005 they 

decided to take it a step further by exploring 

blood management techniques system-wide. 

Swedish is now considered a “blood conservation 

hospital,” meaning blood conservation 

techniques and strategies are incorporated 

before and during surgery in effort to deliver 

the best care with the lowest risks. These 

strategies range from correcting anemia prior 

to surgery, to using new medications, methods, 

and machines to minimize blood loss during 

and after surgery. 

According to Mary Ghiglione, director of 

the Blood and Tissue Management program 

at Swedish, there are a number of reasons for this approach: 

Transfusions are not always necessary. In the past, it was 

common practice to give patients a unit or two of blood after 

surgery to manage anemia. With alternative methods such as 

drug therapy to boost hematocrit levels prior to surgery, to 

blood recycling techniques during operations, it is often unnecessary 

to supplement hematocrit levels post-operatively with a 

blood transfusion.

A blood transfusion is 

a medical procedure in itself. 

Ghiglione likens it to a miniorgan 

transplant. As with any 

procedure, there is always a 

risk of an adverse reaction 

or infection, even when using 

your own blood. 

In some situations, transfusions 

are necessary and 

lifesaving. For instance, they 

are critical for patients in 

Swedish’s growing liver transplant 

program. Blood is a 

limited commodity, and 

system-wide blood conservation 

strategies help to 

ensure that blood is always 

available when needed. 

Swedish’s Blood Management 

program has established 

strict guidelines to 

ensure patient safety, whether surgeries are bloodless or 

involve transfusions. Physicians and nurses are educated and 

updated on current and emerging bloodless and transfusion 

strategies. Blood-use audits and nursing 

transfusion documentation audits in Epic 

(Swedish’s electronic medical records system) 

are constantly performed, as well as bedside 

procedural audits during transfusions to 

improve safety. In conjunction with the 

Puget Sound Blood Center, Swedish has a 

new state-of-the-art blood dispensing system 

which reduces human handling errors and 

improves the delivery of blood products to 

patients when needed. 

“Swedish is a true leader in this area, and 

hospitals around the country look to our 

program as the gold standard. Our work 

is based on delivering the best care with the 

lowest risks, using evidenced-based research and new technologies,” 

says Ghiglione. “Blood will always be available should 

a patient be in need, but Swedish is committed to blood conservation 

efforts, as well as increasing clinician and patient 

knowledge of safe alternatives.”

1984 in the garages of two Seattle 

best friends — Jay Deutsch and Eric 

Bensussen — out of a common passion 

for sports, the company is now 500 associates 

strong with 27 locations worldwide. 

The nation’s leading Merchandise 

Agency , BDA helps Fortune 500 clients 

engage consumers on a 1-to-1 level through 

creative branded merchandise. 

It wasn’t just a shared passion for sports 

that brought these two childhood friends 

together: They also shared the unlikely 

coincidence and connection of having 

families touched by ovarian cancer. And 

years later, they have transformed their 

losses into a company-wide passion for 

giving back to the community. 

For 12 consecutive years, BDA has been 

a leading sponsor of the Swedish SummeRun, 

which benefits the Marsha Rivkin Center 

for Ovarian Cancer Research. “Our company’s 

dedication to Swedish and the 

Rivkin Center stems from both Eric and my 

personal experiences,” says Deutsch. “But, 

the energy and generosity truly comes 

from the entire staff at BDA.” 

Each year, BDA employees from across 

the country participate in a company 

fundraiser, affectionately named Spring 

Fling. Creative events are held over a 

two-week period, including barbecues, 

dunk-tank challenges, silent auctions, 

talent shows and a staff Olympics. “We 

really have fun with it,” says Deutsch. “At 

the same time, we engage our associates, 

vendors, friends and family in a very important 

cause.” To date, BDA has raised more 

than $600,000 for the SummeRun and 

ovarian cancer research. 

“Symptoms of this devastating disease 

are just simple aches and pains. Many 

women don’t know they have it until it’s 

too late,” says Bensussen. “Jay and I both 

experienced that unfortunate circumstance 

first-hand, and are doing our part to make 

sure others won’t have to live through it. 

Research is making a difference. People 

who give are helping survivors and their 

families every day.” 

“BDA is a role model of corporate 

citizenship,” says Clint Burwell, executive 

director of the Rivkin Center. “Their commitment 

to the eradication of ovarian cancer 

is without peer in our region’s corporate 

community.” 

BDA’s growth has been organic, enabling 

the company to maintain its distinct spirit 

of originality and inventiveness. 

“Through creative power and leadership, 

BDA continues to open new doors 

and blaze new trails,” Bensussen says. 

“We know the Rivkin Center reflects that 

same vision, and the research they promote 

will also blaze new trails in ovarian cancer 

treatment and early detection.” i

Thanks to the care he received at the Swedish 

Heart & Vascular Institute, musician 

Ron Herring once again sings 

with a happy heart. 

When you think of winter in Seattle, it doesn’t typically elicit 

images of balmy days spent on the beach. Unless, of course, you 

happen to be at Bahama Breeze in Tukwila, listening to the cool 

sounds of Ron Herring. At age 63, he performs the kind of music 

that makes you smile: Covers of upbeat songs, for which he sings 

vocals and plays guitar, that conjure sunny days and tropical 

isles — think “Girl from Ipanema,” “Mambo No. 5” and any number 

of Jimmy Buffett tunes. With his buoyant melodies, penchant for 

aloha shirts and Panama hats, and happy-go-lucky attitude, he 

looks and acts like a guy who’s happy to be alive. 

And he is — even more so since his dramatic coronary scare 

five years ago.

FEATURE 

Herring, who lives in Burien, describes 

the onset of his symptoms this way: “I felt 

a tightness in my chest for a while, and 

I felt like I had the flu.” When he didn’t 

feel better after a few weeks, and also 

noticed that his complexion had taken on 

a grayish hue, he made an appointment 

with his general practitioner for a checkup. 

His doctor was sufficiently worried to 

send him for an EKG, after which he was 

informed: “You’ve had a heart attack, 

and you’re in danger.” 

Herring recalls, “They told me that one 

of my coronary arteries was totally closed 

and another two arteries were 90 percent 

closed.” He doesn’t remember much after 

hearing these frightening words — only 

that his doctors had him rushed to Swedish 

Medical Center on Cherry Hill in Seattle 

for further evaluation and treatment. 

At Swedish, Herring’s future hung in 

the balance as doctors decided whether 

to perform a risky heart-bypass surgery 

or pursue less-invasive measures. If he 

survived bypass surgery, doctors told him, 

he would probably be a candidate for a 

heart transplant. He received the best news 

he could imagine after being examined by 

Mark Reisman, M.D., a Swedish cardiologist 

and chief scientific officer. Dr. 

Reisman told him, “I think I can save you.” 

Under Dr. Reisman’s care, Herring’s 

condition was stabilized with the help of 

blood thinners, and plans were made 

to perform angioplasty — 

a procedure 

designed to 

enlarge a 

narrowing 

in a coronary artery 

via tubes inserted to 

help keep it open, allowing 

the normal flow 

of blood and 

oxygen to the 

heart. He had a 

stent inserted into each 

of the three blocked arteries in procedures 

performed by Dr. Reisman and his 

colleague, Amish Desai, M.D. — during 

which, at one point, the patient serenaded 

the operating-room team with a rendition 

of Buffett’s “Margaritaville.” Before 

long, Herring was, amazingly, walking 

down the hospital corridors with the 

aid of a walker. 

After the insertion of a defibrillator 

and with the help of physical therapy, 

medication and a few crucial lifestyle 

changes — including quitting smoking 

and beginning to walk a few miles every 

day — Herring’s recovery was, in his 

words, “miraculous.” Five years after his 

health scare, he says, “I’m as healthy as 

a hog. And I wouldn’t be here without 

the world-class team at Swedish.” 

Remarks Dr. Reisman, “Ron — who 

may not have survived us opening up 

his chest for surgery — had a remarkable 

recovery. This story is a testament to the 

whole cardiovascular team, especially the 

nurses. He had a great support system 

and he’s doing great five years later.” 

The heart failure epidemic 

In the parlance of practitioners, 

Herring’s episode was classified as 

“congestive heart failure” — a condition 

in which the heart is unable to pump 

enough blood to meet the needs of the 

body, and a common and often-deadly 

form of heart disease. 

Heart failure is a major health concern 

in the United States, affecting more than 

five million people, about 40,000 of whom 

live in the Seattle metropolitan area. And 

its incidence rates are rising due to an 

aging population and widespread, unhealthy 

lifestyle factors that contribute 

to the disease. At Swedish Medical 

Center alone, more than 800 patients are 

admitted each year with a primary diagnosis 

of heart failure, and it is a secondary 

diagnosis for close to 4,000 patients. 

“I wish heart failure had a better 

name,” says Howard Lewis, M.D, 

executive director of the Swedish Heart & 

Vascular Institute. “The terminology —

‘heart failure’ — is scary for patients to 

hear, but this is the term we use to describe 

what they have. There’s a severity and 

a gravity to it. And it is a big deal — it 

affects a lot of people and lives.” 

Heart failure is generally classified in 

one of two ways: as either “chronic” or 

“acute.” Chronic heart failure is a condition 

that is present in a patient for a long 

period of time and is not immediately 

life threatening. While chronic heart 

failure often becomes more serious over 

time, it can often be treated and stabilized 

through medications and lifestyle changes, 

such as exercise, weight control, quitting 

smoking and dietary changes, including 

a reduced-salt diet. It is occasionally 

treated with invasive or minimally 

invasive procedures, such as surgeries 

or implantation of devices that help the 

heart to pump sufficient blood. 

Acute heart failure — the form of 

the disease suffered by Herring — is 

more serious, characterized by the sudden 

onset of multiple, life-threatening symptoms 

resulting from major disruption of 

the heart’s functioning, due to a heart 

attack, trauma or some other cause. 

This condition can require immediate 

hospitalization, intensive care, multiple 

pharmacological and surgical interventions, 

surgical implementation of devices, 

or heart-transplantation surgery, in 

order to restore patients to a condition in 

which sufficient blood is pumped to their 

bodies. When these patients are stabilized, 

the goal of the care-giving team is to 

help them return to a normal way of life. 

Experts have found that treating both 

types of heart failure successfully requires 

regular and ongoing medical care — 

often over many years — to manage the 

disease via drugs and lifestyle changes, 

and to track its progress. 

“It’s not like treating a case where the 

patient drops a hammer and breaks his 

toe, gets a splint and get better,” says 

Dr. Lewis. “Treating heart failure is much 

more complex and longitudinal. There’s 

a lot more context in how we need to 

successfully care for these patients.” 

The availability of a comprehensive 

center that specifically addresses and 

coordinates all treatment aspects for 

heart-failure patients — ranging from 

relatively healthy individuals recently 

identified as at risk for the disease to 

those with end-stage heart failure — is 

vital for these patients’ recovery, says 

Dr. Lewis. This multi-disciplinary 

approach requires a team of caregivers — 

which might include family practice 

physicians, cardiac specialists, heart 

surgeons and experienced nurse practitioners 

specializing in the disease — 

who collaborate to treat and manage 

every aspect of their patients’ cases for 

a seamless continuum of care. 

“It’s all about providing a meaningful 

outcome for patients,” says Lewis. 

A comprehensive 

heart failure center at Swedish 

As part of supporting Swedish’s 

mission to provide compassionate, highquality 

care to patients, a Comprehensive 

Heart Failure Center is being developed 

at its Cherry Hill campus, which will be 

a major part of the existing Swedish 

Heart & Vascular Institute. The Center 

will be located in a 7,000-square-foot space 

on the fourth floor of the James (cont.)

of research 

Since 1996, the Swedish Research Center — which has an 85-member staff,

a critical component of Swedish Medical Center. Swedish’s research activities 

focus on clinical — or “translational” — research 

that often has an immediate and direct benefit on a 

patient’s outcome. 

As the largest health care provider in the Puget 

Sound region, Swedish has long been focused on 

providing physicians and staff with access to, and 

expertise in, using the most advanced medical technologies, 

treatments, devices and equipment. At any 

given time, more than 600 research projects are underway 

at Swedish in several areas, which rely heavily 

on clinical trials to test the safety and effectiveness of

new treatments, drugs and medical devices. Swedish is an ideal place for this, 

due to its large patient base and experienced physician-researchers and researchsupport 

staff. 

Breakthroughs in cardiovascular medicine 

As the most common cause of death and disability in the United States, cardiovascular 

disease is an important area of research. Diseases of the heart and vascular 

system result in 900,000 deaths, and many more disabling conditions, each year, 

affecting nearly one in four Americans. Research of cardiovascular illnesses have, 

in recent decades, led to improved survival rates and quality of life for patients, due 

to advanced technologies and better understanding of the cardiovascular system. 

The Swedish Cardiovascular Research department makes it possible for 

Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute (SHVI) patients and physicians, many of 

whom are national leaders in their specialties, to participate in drug and device 

studies — including investigational treatments only available in a research 

environment — that provide more options for treating cardiovascular conditions. 

In the last three years, the number of physicians involved in research at the Institute 

has doubled. Currently, a number of cardiovascular studies and clinical trials are 

being conducted at SHVI, including those in the rapidly developing field of structural 

heart disease, an area of research in which the Institute is a national leader. 

Rising Stars 

Swedish’s cardiovascular researchers have a new source of support, thanks 

to SHVI’s Rising Stars Clinical Research program. The program was established 

thanks to a generous $1 million gift from Joe Clark, CEO of Aviation Partners, 

and longtime friend and associate of John L. Petersen, M.D. The goal of Rising 

Stars is to significantly increase the Institute’s cardiovascular clinical-research activities. 

It provides funding to select physician-researchers, allowing them to participate 

in and initiate innovative research projects while also maintaining active practices. 

“Participants will have an opportunity for designated time in the research 

environment,” says John L. Petersen II, M.D., director of cardiovascular research 

at the Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute, and chief medical officer for the Seattle 

Science Foundation. “With this protected time, they’ll be more dedicated to 

pursue their research activities.” 

Rising Stars is conducted by Swedish’s Cardiovascular Research department, 

which considers factors including the overall benefit the research would provide 

to patients in selecting funding recipients. Solicitation of applications for the 

program’s support is currently underway, with the first round of Rising Stars to 

be selected in the near future.

components — including the Center for 

Health and Fitness on the first floor of 

the hospital — and is expected to be 

completed by late 2011. 

“The overall goal of the Comprehensive 

Heart Failure program is to make 

Swedish a national model for patientcentered, 

advanced, comprehensive and 

cost-effective care for the full range of 

heart-failure patients,” says Glenn 

Barnhart, M.D., medical director of 

cardiac surgery at the Swedish Heart & 

Vascular Institute. 

In expanding its cardiovascularcare 

program, Swedish is building on a 

tradition of success: The medical center’s 

existing Heart & Vascular Institute operates 

the largest program of its kind in 

Western Washington, with more than 

60 cardiovascular specialists — including 

cardiologists, surgeons, radiologists, 

anesthesiologists and vascular specialists — 

located at Swedish’s four campuses and 

at numerous Swedish cardiovascular 

clinics in the Pacific Northwest. 

The new Center will integrate the 

activities of all Swedish caregivers, as well 

as those of affiliated caregivers who treat 

chronic and acute heart failure — such 

as primary-care physicians, emergencydepartment 

staffs, nurses and nurse 

practitioners, home-care staffs, hospitalists, 

cardiologist and cardiovascular surgeons — 

at regional hospitals and clinics who 

treat heart failure. By overseeing all of a 

patient’s needs — including inpatient, 

outpatient and emergency care — Swedish 

hopes to improve outcomes for heartfailure 

patients, while also lowering costs 

by managing patients’ cases more effectively. 

Other goals for the Center include: 

– Reducing mortality and re-hospitalization 

rates for patients with acute heart 

failure by providing them with access to 

a full range of surgical, cardiologic and 

pharmacological treatments, including surgical 

implantation of ventricle-assist devices, 

a type of implanted mechanical pump. 

– Working closely with Swedish 

emergency-department teams to develop 

and implement the best practices for 

identifying and treating emergent cases 

of acute heart failure. This emphasis will 

include technology upgrades and procedural 

changes aimed at reducing the 

time needed to assess and treat critical 

cardiovascular patients upon arrival at 

the emergency department. 

– Developing an expanded heart-failure 

research program (see sidebar on page 9). 

– Facilitating access to heart-transplantation 

surgery at other regional centers, 

including assisting with qualification 

of potential recipients, donor matching 

and administration of waiting lists. 

In addition, the new Center will offer 

comprehensive heart failure related education 

designed to improve patients’ 

quality of life by encouraging them to 

become active partners in treating their 

disease. This education component will 

address many different lifestyle and health 

factors by incorporating pharmacists, 

social-service workers, psychologists, 

dieticians, weight-management specialists 

and sleep-disorder specialists, among 

other health-care professionals. It will also 

include a Swedish Heart & Vascular 

Institute-specific web site, developed and 

maintained to provide ready online access 

to materials related to heart failure. 

“Providing education — not only 

to patients, but to their families and to 

the greater community — is key,” says 

Dr. Lewis. “Patients and others need to 

have access to the great informationtechnology 

resources available, and to 

information that is coherent, intelligent 

and responsible. It should be a message 

they can read and reread after they talk 

to their doctors. This is one of the ways 

that doctors can continue to share in the 

education process.” 

A search is ongoing for a nationally 

prominent medical director to oversee the 

Comprehensive Heart Failure Center — 

an individual who will be integral in 

helping it take shape, implementing training 

programs for existing staff, and 

recruiting additional specialists and 

researchers. A new surgical director will 

also be added to the team, under whose 

leadership the Center will be able to deliver 

an expanded range of advanced surgical 

and invasive cardiology treatments. 

Other components of the Comprehensive 

Heart Failure Center are expected 

to include an enhanced cardiologic 

intensive-care unit for heart failure patients, 

a short-stay unit for patients, and coordination 

of training activities with the 

Seattle Science Foundation (SSF), an 

independent organization, located on 

Swedish’s Cherry Hill campus, that 

works closely with the Swedish Heart 

& Vascular Institute on a number of 

activities. SSF’s state-of-the-art conferencing 

capabilities will be an important 

tool for both internal and external training 

activities, and will support the new 

Center as it becomes a key resource in 

improving heart failure care throughout 

the Pacific Northwest.

Of course, the Comprehensive Heart 

Failure Center wouldn’t be possible without 

the contributions of donors, including 

the John L. Locke Jr. Charitable Trust, 

which in May 2010 donated $1.5 million 

to the Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute 

to support the creation of the Heart 

Failure Center.

“The addition of a Comprehensive 

Heart Failure Center will help bring 

a full spectrum of cardiovascular care 

to our community,” says Lida Buckner,

and resources will be focused on efficiently 

providing the full spectrum of heartfailure 

patients with the best-available 

treatments for their disease.” 

When the Center is completed, the 

heart-failure patients in our region will 

have a more-promising chance of receiving 

successful outcomes, such as Ron 

Herring’s. 

“I feel fabulous now — a thousand 

times better than I did five years ago,” 

says Herring. “I’m lucky to 

be alive, and it’s all thanks 

to the wonderful care I

Deserving individuals and partners are recognized for their generosity to Swedish. 

The Swedish Foundation Board of Governors has announced 

the recipients of four distinguished awards that recognize 

the generous support of key individuals and community 

partners. We are pleased to honor the following 2010 awardees. 

The Swedish Community Impact Award 

PACCAR, a Fortune 150 technology company headquartered in 

Bellevue, has been a tremendous supporter and partner of Swedish 

for nearly 20 years. With a long history of service to the Pacific Northwest, 

Swedish is grateful for Paccar’s support, including the 

contribution of two Kenworth trucks to the Swedish Mobile Mammography 

program, aiding in the early detection of breast cancer. 

The Physician Leadership Award 

Patricia Dawson, M.D., Ph.D. is a surgeon at the Cherry 

Hill campus Comprehensive Breast Center. She was named 

Swedish Physician of the Year in 2004, and was recently honored 

as one of Puget Sound Business Journal’s Women of 

Influence. Dr. Dawson has been an inspirational leader in 

helping to raise $10 million to create the True Family Women’s 

Cancer Center. 

Todd Strumwasser, M.D. has helped to build the culture of 

philanthropy among physicians, resulting in over $7.5 million 

in physician gifts to the Campaign for Swedish. Dr. Strumwasser 

and his wife, Kim, were the chairs of the 2008 Celebrate Swedish 

which raised $3.3 million for the Center for Advanced Brain 

Tumor Treatment. Dr. Strumwasser has been a close partner 

with the Foundation in his role as Chief of Staff over the past 

two years, as well serving on the Swedish Board of Trustees. 

The Elmer J. Nordstrom Distinguished Service Award 

Together, the Fisher family (Eric, Rod, Craig, and Eddie) 

have focused their energy on raising money and awareness for 

ovarian cancer research, and in 2002, they started the Fisher 

Family Golf Invitational to benefit the Marsha Rivkin Center. 

Carrying on the legacy of their wife and mother, Babs Fisher, 

the Invitational has raised nearly $3 million for ovarian cancer 

research. In 2008, the Marsha Rivkin Center established the 

Babs & Eddie Fisher Family Endowment. This $1 million endowment 

pays tribute to the Fishers and their friends, family and 

community supporters who have so positively impacted the 

work of the Marsha Rivkin Center. 

The John A. Soderberg Sr. Lifetime Achievement Award 

Dave and Sandy Sabey have a long record of service to 

Swedish and our community which is impressive and inspiring. 

Dave and Sandy have made significant investments in the 

Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute and the Swedish Neuroscience 

Institute. In 2008, their $2 million Campaign gift to 

launch the Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment helped 

leverage an additional $5 million in philanthropic support for 

the brain cancer program. Dave is a member of the Swedish 

Campaign Leadership Council and works closely with Foundation 

staff to introduce new philanthropists to Swedish. i

t the Swedish Foundation, we are 

lucky to have many devoted volunteers 

who give generously of their time 

throughout the year. Volunteers fill various 

roles, from serving on event committees, 

to procuring auction items for Celebrate 

Swedish, to passing out water to Swedish 

SummeRun participants. In this issue of 

IMPACT, we are proud to introduce you 

to one of our outstanding volunteers and 

Summit Club members, Gerda Wirz. 

Gerda, who was born in Switzerland, 

came to Seattle in 1958 with her husband, 

Jean-Pierre, when he accepted an engineering 

position at Boeing. Gerda and 

Jean-Pierre shared a passion for flying, 

and it was this passion that led her to 

purchase a flight school and an accompanying 

charter airplane business, Fancher 

Flyways. She later ran her own three-office 

travel agency and helped with her husband’s 

business ventures after he retired 

from Boeing. 

In the mid 1990’s Gerda and Jean-Pierre 

became Summit Club members at Swedish, 

in part because of the excellent care Jean- 

Pierre received here while being treated 

for cancer. Over the years, her growing 

appreciation for Swedish and its importance 

in people’s lives led her to become 

an active participant on several Foundation 

boards and committees, including 

the Women’s Advisory Board, the Summit 

Club Advisory Board, and the Celebrate 

Swedish gala Committee. She says her 

work for Swedish is a lot like her business 

activities, “although, it’s not a business 

at all — it’s personal.” 

It is that personal connection that 

makes Gerda so special to the Swedish 

Thankfully, volunteer Gerda Wirz has no plans to slow down; she’s a beloved part of the Foundation family. 

Foundation. “Gerda is not only a great 

volunteer but a wonderful person, and it 

has been a pleasure to work with her over 

the years,” says Gwen Colwell, gift clubs 

and annual giving manager. “She really 

cares about Swedish, and she works so 

hard to be sure that we are able to provide 

the highest quality of care we can 

to our patients.” 

In recognition of her outstanding contributions 

as a Swedish volunteer, Gerda 

was awarded the Elmer J. Nordstrom 

Distinguished Service Award in 2001. 

Jennifer Nolte, the Foundation’s stewardship 

manager, is especially grateful to 

Gerda for her willingness to gladly donate 

so much time and support to Swedish: 

“Gerda is a great resource. She has a busy 

and full life, but is somehow always ready 

and willing to reach out to us with ideas 

and energy.” 

At age 76, Gerda has no plans to slow 

down. She has many friends in the community 

and enjoys visiting with relatives 

in Switzerland, her two adult children 

and her grandson, with whom she speaks 

her native French and German. In the 20 

years she has partnered with Swedish, her 

dedication and generosity have remained 

a constant. “I want to do this work so 

others can have a quality medical experience,” 

she says. “It’s a joy to do it.” 

And it’s a joy for us to know Gerda.

Unrestricted gifts fund critical needs at Swedish 

Departments apply for grants to aid patient care and support. 

Each year, many generous donors from 

our community make unrestricted 

gifts to Swedish — those which are 

directed towards the “greatest need of the 

institution.” 

Through a program called Philanthropy 

at Work, departments at Swedish are invited 

to apply for a grant each spring and fall so 

that these unrestricted dollars are put back 

into direct patient care and support. Following 

are just a few examples of recently 

funded grants: 

• Patients suffering from delirium have 

been shown to have a mortality rate similar 

to patients with heart attacks. Research 

has shown that one of the ways 

delirium can be minimized is to have family 

members present who can comfort and 

re-orient patients to time and place, especially 

during the night when the condition 

often worsens. A grant to support a pilot 

project on delirium management has allowed 

the purchase of six portable, folding cots

A recent example of a grateful patient and a true philanthropist is Brian McGinty. 

Brian ultimately lost his fight against cancer, but during treatment he recognized how 

philanthropy could contribute to better care for all cancer patients. He was grateful to his 

team of doctors and nurses, and made provisions for SCI in his estate plans. 

“When Brian chose to make an estate gift to SCI, it was obvious that the care he 

received played an important role in his decision,” says Theophilus. “It is also a testament 

to Brian’s compassionate character. Brian recognized that community support is 

critical to changing outcomes for future patients, and that will be his legacy.”

patients access to many important services 

at a fraction of the price, while improving 

both the efficiency and quality of the care 

currently provided.

2010 was another extraordinary year for our Foundation, 

our fourth record-breaking year in a row for 

philanthropic support. Over the twelve months of 

Swedish’s centennial year, we received more than $19.7 

million in gifts from donors who understand how 

important this great institution is to our community. 

This total — which includes over $350,000 from fundraising 

efforts at Swedish/Edmonds, the former Stevens 

Hospital in Edmonds which joined Swedish in September — 

represents a 12.9% increase over our 2009 total. Equally 

exciting was the fact that, at year’s end, we had raised 

over $70 million toward our $100 million, multi-year goal for the Campaign 

for Swedish. 

The credit for making 2010 such a banner year at Swedish Medical Center 

goes to you, our loyal and generous donors, volunteers, board members and 

friends. Each of us at the Foundation thanks you for your gifts of time and 

money, and for all that you do to make Swedish a better place. The following

Swedish Visiting Nurse Services brings expert medical care into the home. 

Swedish Visiting 

Nurse Services 

Swedish Visiting Nurse Services (SVNS) provides care 

and comfort to people from all walks of life in a variety of 

circumstances, whether it involves assistance recovering from 

surgery or a medical ailment, help coping with a life limiting 

illness, or learning how to manage the aging process. 

SVNS relies on community partnerships to offer a broad 

range of services to home health and hospice patients, their 

families, and caregivers. Gifts to the Campaign for Swedish 

directed to SVNS provide care to those with no insurance; 

transitional support to those electing to receive hospice care; 

grief support groups and counseling for patients and their 

families; as well as comfort therapies, including massage 

and music, to relieve patients’ pain and anxiety. 

“We would not be able to serve the community as broadly 

and effectively as we do without the support from donors,” 

says Jon Younger, M.D., medical director of SVNS. 

Tribute, memorial and estate gifts are particularly meaningful 

because they are typically made in gratitude for care 

received. A recent gift from the estate of JoAnn Anderson, 

for example, has allowed SVNS to plan for the provision 

of remote care technology by physicians and staff. Remote 

care is an effective way for patients to give needed information 

to providers on a daily basis without the patient having 

to go to the hospital or other facilities. 

“We are so appreciative when people make gifts to SVNS,” 

Dr. Younger says. “Not only does it show that we have done 

our job in providing patient-centered care, but these gifts 

allow us to provide care and comfort for future patients 

and their families.”

and golf events set 

records for Rivkin Center 

The 2010 Fisher Family & Friends Auction & Golf Invitational, 

lead by auction co-chairs Eric and Gloria Bensussen, 

and golf event co-chairs Craig and Rod Fisher, set a new record 

by raising a combined total of over $1.1 million for the Marsha 

Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research. 

Golfers enjoyed spectacular weather in a “Ryder’s Cup” 

style tournament on August 15th at the Redmond Ridge Golf 

Club. Barrier Motors offered a “hole-in-one” prize opportunity 

to win a new Mercedes Benz or Audi, and Outback Steakhouse 

provided a fantastic meal following the tournament. 

On November 5th, over 500 guests attended the dinner 

and auction event at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue. A variety 

of prizes were presented to bidders, including Super Bowl XLV 

tickets, a trip to New York Fashion Week, tickets to the PGA 

Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club, and 

a walk-on role in the 5th Avenue production of Guys and Dolls. 

The evening also paid special tribute to two remarkable 

ovarian cancer survivors and recipients of the 2010 Courage 

for Life Award: Cynthia “C.J.” Taylor, founder and former 

executive director of the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. 

Komen for the Cure; and Nicole Urban, M.D., worldrenowned 

ovarian cancer researcher at the Fred Hutchinson 

Cancer Center. 

“We cannot thank everyone enough for their incredible 

passion and commitment to the Rivkin Center. We hope that 

each of the participants share in our excitement and take 

pride in these record-breaking accomplishments,” say auction 

co-chairs Eric and Gloria Bensussen.
