Dear Parents:<br />
Free Tutoring for Your Child!<br />
Help your child succeed at school – sign up for free tutoring! Because of the No Child Left Behind funding, your<br />
child can receive extra help in reading and mathematics. You can receive this free tutoring because <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong><br />
Community <strong>School</strong> is in its second year or later of <strong>School</strong> Improvement, and if your family meets the income limits<br />
under the law.<br />
<strong>School</strong> Improvement means that your school did not meet Ohio’s goals in reading, mathematics or attendance for<br />
two years in a row or more. <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong> Community <strong>School</strong> has been identified for improvement because it has<br />
not made Adequate Yearly Progress on Ohio’s Achievement Tests for at least three years in a row. The students at<br />
FLCS did not meet Ohio’s adequate yearly progress goals in the following areas: the ALL group in reading and<br />
math for 2007-08, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010.<br />
You can now choose a free tutoring program that is best for your child. The district will provide assistance in<br />
selecting an approved provider, if requested. A list of approved tutoring programs that wish to offer free tutoring<br />
is enclosed, and can also be viewed from a link on <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong> Community <strong>School</strong> web page (www.franklinlocal.k12.oh.us).<br />
These programs have been approved by the Ohio Department of Education and will provide your<br />
child with tutoring that is coordinated with what is being taught in your child’s school. The availability of this free<br />
tutoring may be limited.<br />
Please contact me at 674-5203 if you have any questions about these services. If you would like to select a tutor<br />
now, you can fill out the enclosed provider selection form and mail it back to Sharon McDermott, 360 Cedar<br />
Street, P.O. Box 428, Duncan Falls, Ohio, 43734. Forms are due by September 1, 2010. You will receive a letter<br />
from <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> by September 15, 2010, telling you when the free tutoring will start.<br />
If you do not wish to sign up for these services, you may also choose to transfer your child to another school that is<br />
not in <strong>School</strong> Improvement. See the attached Public <strong>School</strong> Choice letter and information.<br />

Public <strong>School</strong> Choice Notification Letter<br />
Dear Parents:<br />
This letter is to let you know that <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong> Community <strong>School</strong> (FLCS) has been identified as in need of<br />
improvement. <strong>School</strong> Improvement means that your school did not meet Ohio’s goals in reading, mathematics or<br />
attendance for two years in a row or more. . The students at FLCS did not meet Ohio’s adequate yearly progress<br />
goals in the following areas: the ALL group in reading and math for 2007-08, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010.<br />
When schools do not meet the adequate yearly progress goals, students must be given choice to stay at that school<br />
or to enroll in another school. Your child can attend a similar school that is NOT in need of improvement and the<br />
district will pay for transportation.<br />
You have the following choice to remain at <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong> Community <strong>School</strong> or to attend a similar school that<br />
you need to contact to enroll:<br />
• Grades 9-12 could attend Philo High <strong>School</strong> in the <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>.<br />
• Grade 7-8 could attend East Muskingum Middle <strong>School</strong> in the East Muskingum <strong>Local</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> or<br />
West Muskingum Middle <strong>School</strong> in the West Muskingum <strong>Local</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>.<br />
Attached is a list of information about those schools to help you make your choice. Participating in the school<br />
choice option with provided transportation is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please complete the<br />
attached form by September 10th to let us know which school you would like your child to attend.<br />
You may request free tutoring on a limited basis in place of transferring your child to another school. If you<br />
decide to keep your child at <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong> Community <strong>School</strong>, simply have him/her report to school on the<br />
opening day.<br />
Our local report card [http://www.ode.state.oh.us/reportcard] and/or the sheet attached shows how well <strong>Franklin</strong><br />
<strong>Local</strong> Community <strong>School</strong> did when compared with other schools.<br />
To help <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>Local</strong> Community <strong>School</strong> get out of <strong>School</strong> Improvement, we will develop a plan to help our<br />
students do better in reading and math for the coming year. You are invited to join us to help make that happen.<br />
