worship insufficient and said: ‘Where are we compared to the<br />

Prophet as his past and future sins have been forgiven.’ Then<br />

one of them said: ‘I will offer prayer throughout the night for<br />

ever.’ The other said: ‘I will fast throughout the year and will not<br />

break my fast.’ The third said: ‘I will keep away from women and<br />

will never marry.’ When the Messenger of Allah heard this, he<br />

called them and said: “Are you the same people who said so-and<br />

so? By Allah! Indeed, I am the one who fears Allah the most<br />

amongst you, and the most pious of you; yet I fast and break my<br />

fast, I pray and I sleep, and I marry women. So he who opposes<br />

my Sunnah is not from me.” 384<br />

Therefore, deeds become insignificant and yield no gain if they<br />

are not performed with the Ittiba (guidance or following) of<br />

Allah’s Messenger . The three men wanted to perform more<br />

prayers and fast, which are great worships, and encouraged by<br />

Allah’s Messenger - but this worship would not benefit them<br />

because it lacked the Ittiba of Allah’s Messenger , even though<br />

their intention was solely to worship Allah and achieve His<br />

pleasure.<br />

The Effects and Benefits of Dhikr according to the<br />

Deobandis:<br />

After an analysis of the Aqeedah, manner and exaggeration in the<br />

Sufi Dhikr (also called, ‘Riyaadah’ and ‘Shagl’), we take a look at<br />

the end-result of the Dhikr as claimed by the Deobandis in their<br />

books.<br />

Revelation of the past, present and future episodes:<br />

It is mentioned in Irshaadul-Mulook, “Mukashafat – the sight of<br />

noorani (spiritual radiant) forms. By virtue of the purity of the<br />

heart and the effect of Dhikr and Shagl, sometimes, past, present<br />

and future episodes are revealed.” 385<br />

Dhikr causes the body to dismember:<br />
