Synthesis of substituted pyrimidines via Wittig<br />

2.9 Conclusion<br />

We have described a versatile synthesis of novel 2-chloro-4-(4-fluorophenyl)-<br />

6-isopropyl-5-(E)-substituted pyrimidines from triphenyl[2-chloro-{4-(4-flouro<br />

phenyl)-6-isopropyl-pyrimidin-5-ylmethyl}phosphonium]bromide with different<br />

aldehydes via Wittig reaction in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate as a base in<br />

aqueous media. Inorganic base sodium tripolyphosphate has the further advantage of<br />

low cost, stability and low toxicity. All the synthesized compounds were evaluated<br />

for their antimicrobial activity. The investigation of antibacterial and antifungal<br />

screening data revealed that all the tested compounds AW-01 to AW-20 showed<br />

moderate to significant activity. For example, compounds AW-02, 12, 13 and 18<br />

showed comparatively good activities against all the bacterial strains and thus<br />

warrant further study.<br />
