THE BRUTON DINNER THE BRUTON DINNER 2004 Once again, rain stopped play – or, more accurately, rain made play rather difficult. In 2003, no sooner had we established ourselves comfortably in the Millennium Circle, drinks in hand, Jazz Band in full swing, than a sudden heavy squall sent us scuttling for cover. This year, the rain made its intentions clear from the outset, so we took our drinks safely in the Hobhouse Science Centre, that great cathedral to the west of the Memorial Hall, with the Jazz Band installed in the upper gallery. An almost record turnout rendered this all very cosy. The evening that followed was, by common consent, an unqualified success: there was the usual convivial Brutonian atmosphere and once again we dined excellently. I reproduce the menu here in the hope that it might lure some of you not normally given to attending the Dinner to come and join us in 2005. Poached chaud-froid of salmon served with a dressed salad garnish & freshly baked roll or Trio of Melon Beef Stroganoff served with freshly chopped parsley and golden croutons Lemon & ginger chicken served with strips of pepper and fresh coriander Sweet & sour pork Mushroom Stroganoff Minted Cornish new potatoes Saffron rice Mixed salads Chocolate Mousse or Exotic fruit salad with double cream (fresh pineapple, mango, kiwi, strawberries, grapes, melon & Malibu) Cheese board Coffee & mints The evening had further highlights. The President used his speech to thank all those who had worked unstintingly to make the occasion so distinctive, most especially the School Caterer, Annette Demarest and her team. Honorary Membership of the Association was then conferred on two long-standing Brutonians: Jan Juneman, formerly Headmaster’s Secretary and now secretary to both the King’s School Foundation and to the Old Brutonian Association, and Colin Jones, retiring from the School after thirty years, latterly in the vital role of Director of Studies. Colin was also presented with the Association’s retirement cheque for £300. (He and Pam have now moved to their new home in Monmouth.) This was also Richard Smyth’s last Bruton Dinner as headmaster of the School before taking up the headmastership of St Peter’s, York. He spoke very movingly of how we should all feel pride in our School and was presented, by the President, with a handsome engraved silver salver from the Association. The formal part of the evening closed with a hearty rendition of Carmen Brutoniense, ‘heartiness’ being understood to represent almost anything from affectionate enthusiasm to bulls in china shops. Several OB’s wrote to acknowledge the pleasure they had had from the Dinner, and I hope that they will not mind my quoting a couple of their comments: “I feel I must put in writing my appreciation of the splendid evening we all enjoyed so much last Saturday.” “I am writing to say many thanks to the OBA for the lovely occasion held at school on June 26th. It was so warming to be back in the school I grew up in, and hence grew so fond of, after all these years.” 2005 will be the first Bruton Dinner for our new Headmaster, Nigel Lashbrook. I trust the Association will take that opportunity of greeting him and his wife, Jill, with its customary warmth. It will also be the last Dinner in office for our current President, Chris Rhys-Jones; I hope we will be able to make it a happily memorable occasion for him too.
