NEWS OF OLD BRUTONIANS
Americanism and the Need for Public
Diplomacy.”
In his spare time John has been doing the
rounds of the Chinese choral music circuit
including trips down to Shanghai to
inaugurate the Shanghai International
Festival Chorus and a New Year’s Gala where
he happily bellowed various kitschy opera
pieces. John says that his ‘A’ level French has
been exceedingly useful, as one of the
conductors that he has been working with
spoke only French so John was able to
translate into English for the choir. He was
particularly pleased to be able to sing a small
solo and the majority of the choruses in the
Chinese premier of Bach’s St Matthew Passion
in May 2004 with the International Festival
Chorus in Beijing.
Once his academic year is over John is
returning to New York to work in the nonprofit
civil rights sector but has now returned
to work in London.
Jake TUPMAN (O96/01) and Rob DONNELLAN
(N96/01) have been doing admirable work out
in Thailand with child victims of the tsunami,
“all of whom have lost at least one parent,
their homes and all their possessions. Their
morale is obviously low, and there is an
urgent need at this time to get the children
playing again, to bring some fun and laughter
back into their lives. We (Dragonfly) are a
small organization based in the northeast of
Thailand, providing English camps for schools
all over the country. An English camp is
sometimes described as 'edutainment'. Similar
to a Scout camp (but much more fun), we
educate Thai students in English by
organising fun activities and games. We have
been running camps for over a year now, and
organising English camps in Phuket is the
obvious way for us to help the children
affected by the tsunami.” An e-mail address
(donations@thai-dragonfly.com) and their
website (www.thai-dragonfly.com) would
supply further information and provide an
opportunity to donate to their excellent work.
award enabling her to spend 4 months of her
‘Gap’ year working at Mlonda girls Secondary
School, arranged through Africa & Asia
Venture Ltd. Laura writes that she is having an
incredible time teaching Biology and English
to classes of 60 – 90 girls of varying ages
which she finds a very fulfilling project. The
school is poor and rural but set in a beautiful
location of magnificent mountains and
countryside and, although under-resourced,
the school has some good teachers and an
amazing Christian faith. Laura is living with 3
other girls from the UK, all giving as much
time as they can to the secondary school,
primary school and the village group/Aids-
HIV awareness group. Laura describes
working on this project as ‘amazing and
awesome’.
OBA SUBSCRIPTION RATES
The Rules of the Association stipulate that
the current OBA subscription rates should be
published in the Newsletter. The following
information is given to comply with this
requirement.
The life subscription rate for those joining
the Association on leaving the School or
within ten years thereafter is £252. The life
subscription rate can be changed by the
Association in general meeting.
Arrangements have been put in place for
subscriptions to be collected by instalments
whilst a pupil is in the School.
The life subscription rate for those joining
more than ten years after leaving the School
is related to the life subscription rate for
leavers in the year of joining on a sliding
scale laid down in the Association’s Rules.
Associate membership is available to staff at
the School on payment of an annual
subscription rate equal to one-tenth of the
life subscription rate for leavers in the year of
joining. After payment of ten annual
subscriptions an associate member
automatically becomes a life member.
