A LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Principal 

Hi Eastvalley Family, 

The school year draws to a close which is an exciting 

time for all staff. It is wonderful to see the growth 

that all children have made over the course of the 

school year and it is exciting to watch them grow up 

before our eyes. As a staff, we will use the days of 

summer to study curriculum, plan for next year, and 

yes, take some time to relax and reenergize. 

We congratulate the following staff members who 

will be retiring at the end of the year: Mrs. Tamara 

Hathcoat, Mrs. Kathryn Liddicoet and Mrs. Dianne 

Maslak (ASP Director). Congratulations to all of these 

ladies and we hope they have many fun days ahead 

of them in retirement. Thank you for your service to 

the students and families of Eastvalley.

Our summer office hours are Monday-Thursday from 

8:00-11:00 a.m and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Please call (770-578-7214) before dropping by the 

school as there are days that planned vacations or meetings will close the office 

entirely. 

Sneak a peek is planned for Tuesday, August 6. There will be additional information 

coming on the specific times. Please check the blog over the summer for updated 

information. The first day of school for students is Wednesday, August 7 beginning 

at the 7:50 bell. Have a great summer!

A LETTER FROM THE PTA 

And so another school year is coming to an end. 

Wasn’t it just January??? I’m not sure where this year 

has gone. 

This year ends my two-year term as PTA co-president. 

These two years have been both challenging and 

fulfilling. 

The PTA is a much-needed and quietly busy entity. 

We are all volunteers that dedicate countless hours 

to organizing, budgeting and meeting to find ways 

to make our school a better place for our children to 

learn. 

I would encourage you to buy a membership and get 

involved next year. It’s not scary and doesn’t have 

to take up vast amounts of time. A few hours spent 

helping with International night, Books for Breakfast 

or any of the many programs that the PTA sponsors 

can make all the difference. Be a part of a great 

organization!! 

As we all head our separate ways for summer 

vacations, let’s remember to appreciate one another 

and to enjoy the time we are afforded with our 

children. Throwing a ball, playing with the water 

hose or eating a whole bowl of fat-filled and sprinklecovered 

ice cream are the memories our children carry 

with them for always. 

Have fun, play hard and see you next year!! Remember 

to continue to save your box tops!!

The SPLOST Vote 

On March 19, 2013, Cobb county voters approved the Splost IV 

referendum which will extend the collection of the 1% sales tax for 

school projects which is currently in effect through 2018. The SPLOST 

is projected to collect $717,844,707 over the next five years. 

The Special Local Option Sales Tax provides money to the school 

system for school-related capital improvements that are not included 

in the general operating budget. The SPLOST funds can only be used 

for capital improvements and cannot be used for salaries or operating 

expenses such as busing and utilities. 

EASTVALLEY FOUNDATION UPDATE 

Summary of how we spent our money: 

We gave more than $8,000 to teachers to 

use for classroom supplies as part of the 

Parent Challenge. 

More than $4,000 was raised from families 

and we gave an additional $100 per 

classroom so that teachers do not have to 

use their own money. 

Included in the SPLOST projects notebook are new and replacement 

school facilities, the construction of approximately 407 new 

classrooms throughout the district, maintenance projects such as 

parking lot repaving, painting and plumbing as well as funding for 

technology infrastructure and curriculum as well as safety and 

security measures. 

SPLOST will allow for many improvements to our schools as well 

eliminating the need to issue bonds to pay for these improvements 

which have to be paid back with interest.

A NEW PARTNER IN EDUCATION 

The Library now has $3,000 worth of new 

books, which were much needed. 

The combined efforts of the PTA and 

Foundation’s Patron Drive helped fund the 

PTA budget so that programs like Books 

for Breakfast are supported, the school 

can provide field trips for all children and 

we can promote community through our 

Family Events like International Day and 

Fall Festival throughout the year. 

Thank you to those who enriched their 

child’s education by investing in our 

Patron Drive last fall. 

We need continued support from families 

so we can provide even more for Eastvalley 

next year.

Boosterthon Fun Run Raises $19,000 

The Boosterthon Fun Run was an 

awesome program for our students 

and staff. The daily character 

lessons, the enthusiasm, the run 

itself, and the money raised will all 

benefit Eastvalley students in many 

different ways in the upcoming 

months. All students were able 

to be Boosterthon All-Stars in 

understanding how to make good 

choices and running up to 35 laps 

to show their fitness levels. The 

students were able to get pledges 

from 36 states and 16 countries 

in their efforts to raise just over 

$19,000 for the Eastvalley PTA.

Hello Eastvalley families, 

We are almost finished with this school year and have celebrated many 

fun events in 2012 and 2013. Eastvalley is so fortunate to have so many 

wonderful volunteers to help us with all these events and daily school 

activities. 

Perhaps you have seen an event or a program and have said, “I could help 

with that!” or “I’d like to co-Chair that!” We can put you in touch with 

current and previous volunteers and let you know all the position entails.

FUN BY THE GRADE! 

First Grade: Market Day 

First Grade went shopping on Market Day! This 

is how First Grade completed their unit on 

producers and consumers. Each class created 

their own product and then they sold their 

items to one another. 

Third Grade: It’s HOT! 

To finish up our unit on heat, we 

investigated heat sources with a handson 

lab. We observed electricity, friction, 

burning and solar energy. Each student 

had to make a prediction, observe and 

record their observations. 





Fifth Grade Field Trip 

The 5th Grade went to Jekyll Island 

March 25-27. It was very cold, but the 

kids had a great time. 

Second Grade: Life Cycles 

Reflections for Next Year! 

We are very proud of our 13 winners at 

the county level for the PTA Reflections 

contest this year. Unfortunately, we had no 

state winners. Thanks to all students who 

entered the contest and thank you parents 

for making sure the entries were in on 

time. 

Second grade is learning about life cycles. They learned about 

the life cycle of plants by planting seeds and watching as 

they sprouted and become plants. They anxiously watched 

their caterpillars as they grew and built their chrysalises and 

emerged as butterflies. 

The theme for next year, 2013-14, is 

"Believe, Dream, Inspire." 

The deadline to submit entries to the 

Eastvalley Reflections committee is 

tentatively set for September 30th. 

Don't wait — start working on those 

entries now!

Fourth Grade: Hands-On History Lesson 

Fourth graders had a great time re-enacting history with the 

Land Grab on May 14.

member of the Leadership Club. In addition 

to academics, Alan is very athletic. He played 

Varsity football his freshmen year and played 

Varsity baseball during his remaining three 

years at Wheeler. He is currently a student 

volunteer at Pinnacle Orthopedics and at the 

MS Center of Atlanta/Peachtree Neurology. 

We wish Alan much success in his future 

endeavors! 

A Lesson in Courage 

On Monday, May 7th, the 4th and 5th graders 

were honored by a visit from civil rights pioneer 

Terrence Roberts. Dr. Roberts is one of the nine 

African-American students who integrated 

Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 

1957. The group of nine students is 

known as the "Little Rock Nine." Dr. 

Roberts spoke to the students about 

his time at Central High and how he 

was able to maintain his dignity and 

self-esteem in the face of never-ending 

violence. 

Dr. Roberts is the grandfather of 4th 

grader PJ Goodloe and 1st grader Austin 

Goodloe. PJ asked his grandfather to 

come to Eastvalley to talk about his 

courage during his time at Central High 

School because PJ's Target class has 

been studying courage this semester.

On March 1, kids (and teachers!) 

celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by 

dressing like their favorite book 

characters!

EASTVALLEY CUB SCOUT PACK 565 NEEDS YOU 

Parents of upcoming 1st - 5th 

grade boys are needed to help run 

Cub Scout Pack 565 at Eastvalley 

Elementary. 

For more than 20 years, Pack 565 

has introduced 1st - 5th grade 

Eastvalley boys and their families 

to Scouting. Once a boy completes 

Kindergarten, he can join Cub 

Scouts as a member of a Tiger Cub 

Den with other 1st grade boys. 

A NEW PARTNER IN EDUCATION 

They become Wolf Cubs for the 

2nd grade year, Bear Cubs for the 

3rd grade year, and then Webelos 

Scouts for the 4th grade year, 

before crossing over to Boy Scouts 

around February of their 5th grade 

year.

Leaders, and Pack Committee 

Members are needed to ensure an 

effective and fun scouting program

The main requirement is an 

enthusiasm for introducing boys 

to the joys of Cub Scouting and 

a willingness to put in the effort 

to be an effective Adult Leader. 

Volunteers who fill official Adult 

Leader roles must submit a BSA 

Adult Application Form, pass 

a background check, and take 

Youth Protection Training, along 

with other role-specific training 

(provided and/or paid for by the 

Pack).

Easy Fundraising! 

Box tops: 

Our box tops goal for the 

2012-2013 school year 

was $2,126. We raised 

$2,826, which is $700 

over goal!!! 

The winning classroom 

was Ms. Levinson’s 4th 

grade which brought 

in 888 boxtops. We had 

17 classroom winners 

this boxtops campaign, 

those classrooms won 

pizza or ice cream parties 

for bringing in over 

250 boxtops per class. 

Thank you very much for 

participating in this very 

successful PTA fundraiser. 

Please keep clipping boxtops over the summer, as the next boxtop 

campaign will be in October 2013 and we will have another exciting 

challenge and prizes to be awarded.

Labels for Education: 

We are also starting to collect Labels for Education points. You 

will learn more about this before the end of school. 

Send in any and all of these labels, as the school will receive 

much needed PE, Art, Music and Computer equipment from

We will have some fun challenges in the fall, so stay tuned. 

Recycling: 

Publix donates all of the ice cream for 

box top classroom winners. 

Thank you to Publix on Johnson Ferry! 

The PTA receives money for recycling newspapers and 

magazines. The bin is picked up monthly and we are paid based 

on weight. 

Please recycle your newspapers and magazines by putting them in red and 

green bin in front of gym entrance. 

Shop at Publix: 

Publix is a Partner in Education and we have 

special Eastvalley loyalty scan cards. The PTA 

receives money quarterly based on dollar 

amount purchased using our cards. 

Attach the card to your keychain and let them swipe 

it when you check out at Publix. No need to give any 

information as the card is connected to Eastvalley Elementary 

PTA and they send a check. Please pick up a 

card in the office next time you are here or send a note 

and we will send home a card with your child. 

ORDER SCHOOL SUPPLIES BY MAY 23! 

Attention Parents! We have partnered 

again this year with School Tool Box and 

we have met several early deadlines 

in the process so as to receive the 

maximum available discount for school 

supplies, which we have passed on to 

you. 

By going to their website, you can order 

the entire list of school supplies required 

for the 2013-2014 school year by grade 

level for your students and the supplies 

will be shipped directly to the school 

towards the send of the summer and 

delivered to your child’s classroom – so 

you order them now and then forget all 

about them! 

This vendor uses all the name brands 

that you are used to and that our 

teachers and students prefer, such as 

Elmer’s, Crayola, Sharpie and Mead. 

So you won’t have to spend your time 

searching out those last few hard to find 

school supplies – just order the boxes
