Principal’s Desk 

Dear Friends, 

As I reflect on this past St. Ursula Villa school year, 

one word comes to mind – blessed. Our blessings are 

many and varied, ranging from the extracurricular 

and academic successes of St. Ursula Villa students 

to the unique, historic beauty of our school campus. 

Our students’ talents and achievements were 

featured in many forums. Sports championships, 

Power of the Pen competitions, drama performances, 

Destination Imagination tournaments, art shows, 

mission trips, and high school entrance exams all 

provided impressive proof of Villa students’ dedication, 

hard work, and determination to do their very best. 

At Graduation Mass, we said goodbye to our eighth 

graders and their families as they go forward from 

the Villa with God’s blessings. 

St. Ursula Villa is grounded in its strong Catholic 

beliefs and Ursuline values. We again received 

distinction as a “School of Contribution” through 

Children, Inc.’s Mayerson Service Learning 

Initiative which beautifully fits the Villa’s mission 

of Christ-centered commitment to society. Villa 

students incorporated service into their school 

experiences where learning drives the service. 

Bake sales, recycling efforts, collecting books, 

and growing plants are a few examples of how 

our students raised money and awareness of their 

service learning projects to make a difference and 

share their blessings with those in need. 

Our dedicated parent community is one of our 

school’s greatest resources and blessings. Parents’ 

financial investment in their children’s educational 

experiences creates a partnership of high 

expectations which furthers academic excellence. 

Villa parents also invest countless volunteer hours – 

as field trip chaperones, Scout leaders, coaches, and 

lunch servers. They help with Villabration, VPO, 

Boosters, May Party, and classroom projects. It has 

been particularly rewarding to see how eagerly the 

current Villa parents mentor new Villa parents. 

This successful “Villa Vets” program gives new 

parents a clear view of how special St. Ursula Villa 

is and how blessed we are to be a part of it. 

St. Ursula Villa’s dedicated faculty never cease to 

amaze me with their enthusiasm and professionalism. 

They seek unique professional development 

opportunities to constantly improve programs, 

enhance classroom experiences, and encourage 

every student to achieve his fullest potential. 

I am so blessed to work with these amazing 

educators who embody the visionary spirit of 

St. Angela Merici. 

The Villa campus is extraordinary in its beauty, 

location, and historical significance. We are very 

blessed to have this gorgeous property on which to 

learn, grow, and play. As part of the Ursulines of 

Cincinnati’s legacy, we cherish this property and 

appreciate its unique history and wonderful treasures. 

We also look to the future to ensure our school’s 

outstanding programs and continued success. 

I hope you and your family are enjoying a lovely 

summer and we look forward to seeing you in 

August for the start of another blessed year at the 

Villa!

Nine students were recognized for academic excellence by 

maintaining an “A” average in their major subjects during

Sophia Jacobs was recognized as the

The Charles J. Sanker Scholarship 

to St. Ursula Academy was awarded 

to Symia Jackson-Conley because of 

her exemplary character and sense of 

responsibility as a student, as well as 

her love for St. Ursula Villa. 

Sons of the American Revolution 

Citizenship Award 

This award is given to students who demonstrate 

the qualities of dependability, cooperation, leadership, 

patriotism, and clean speech and habits.

Jean Kennevan Writing Award 

The Jean Kennevan Writing Award 

was bestowed on Molly Barresi in 

recognition of her creative writing 

efforts and abilities. 

Louise Helmick Award 

The Louise Helmick Award was given 

to Charlie Perez for demonstrating the 

Christian virtues that characterized 

the life of Louise Helmick – kindness, 

patience, understanding, perseverance, 

and a genuine caring concern for 

fellow students and human beings. 

Sister Mary Oliver Award 

Ximena Trevino received the Sr. Mary 

Oliver Award for best exemplifying the 

personal qualities of enthusiasm, 

dedication to work, a sense of humor, 

and love of America – all qualities 

evidenced in the life of Sr. Mary Oliver.

Happenings 

MANOR HOUSE 

Montessori students raised Painted Lady butterflies, 

observing each stage of the caterpillar to butterfly 

transformation. The children decorated special 

butterfly wands to “make a wish” for each butterfly 

when released on the Manor House patio. 

Students in the Multi-Age 3- and 4-year-old classroom 

shared their traditional “School Bus Project.” Each child 

drove their “bus” with their classmates as passengers 

as a great way for the children to remember their 

classmates over the summer. 

Traditional 3-year-old preschoolers created 

“maracas” out of recycled water bottles at 

“Villapalooza,” the Manor House’s service learning 

project. The fun morning included musical 

performances and experiences in conjunction with a 

drive to collect donations for Inter-Parish Ministry. 

Traditional 4-year-old 

students studied plants 

and growth of spring and 

summer flowers, creating 

colorful art in their 

learning process. 

Montessori Kindergarteners and Ms. Jones’ Third Graders enjoyed many “buddy” activities during the year, ranging 

from a nature scavenger hunt to making rosaries for May Crowning.

Traditional Kindergarten 

and Primary 

Traditional Kindergarteners and Ms. Jeck’s 

First Grade class used Earth Day to discuss 

the importance of keeping our Earth clean and 

helped pick up the Villa campus. 

First Graders participated in a Reading Rainbow 

video presentation, dressing as a character from a 

book they read and giving a speech about why other 

people would love to read it too! 

These Second Graders created and 

performed “The Bremen Town Rappers” 

puppet show, culminating a month-long 

study of fairy tales. 

Third Graders enjoyed a visit from Cincinnati Zoo Outreach 

and an American alligator named “Keystone” as part of 

their study of reptiles.

Happenings 

INTERMEDIATE 

Fourth Grade’s traditional Camp Joy overnight 

included outdoor courses in wetland and forest 

ecology, ornithology, and geology. They also used 

authentic pioneer tools and participated in pioneer 

activities. 

These Fourth and Fifth Grade students earned Boy 

Scout and Webelo rank and were recognized during 

the Final School Liturgy. Their service project during 

Catholic Schools Week raised more than 200 pounds 

of goods for the Yellow Ribbon Support Center. 

Sixth Graders donned tie-dye 

shirts as their Field Day 

“uniform” and enjoyed a 

morning of basketball on the 

Villa Way and other sports 

and games.

JUNIOR HIGH 

Seventh and Eighth Grade Science students earned 

awards at the Villa’s Science Fair with projects ranging 

from “Research on Progeria” and “Horse Color Vision” to 

“Cell Phone Reception” and “Moldy Strawberries.” 

Junior High students presented the “Everybody 

Counts” program to the younger students, as 

this Eighth Grader facilitates a vision and 

sensory loss activity. 

Eighth Graders led May Crowning, a longstanding 

Villa tradition, on the lovely Manor House lawn. 

The Junior High Ultimate Frisbee Club was in 

action for its second year this spring, meeting 

after school to play on the soccer field or in gym. 

The Junior High Power of the Pen team competed 

at the state finals, earning 14th place among 274 

schools. The tournament included 721 contestants 

and 2,397 pieces of writing from the top 10% of the 

writers in the state.

SPECIALTY CLASSES: PHYSICAL EDUCATION 

The Sister Mary Lawrence Award winner for 2013 was Seventh Grader John 

Arthur Williams. Given in honor of former Villa principal and First Grade 

teacher Sister Mary Lawrence, this award is given to one Gym student who 

shows good sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and a great attitude towards their 

classmates. In bestowing this award, P.E. teacher Beth Hake noted that 

“John Arthur was always eager for any activity and always give his best 

effort. He worked hard on improving his skills and made sure his classmates 

were successful in their endeavors.” 

SPECIALTY CLASSES: 

MUSIC 

Villa Summer Camps offered 

performance opportunities 

with this musical production 

of “How Does Your Garden 

Grow?” Campers delighted 

their parents with the songs 

and choreography mastered 

during the week-long minimusical 

camp. 

SPECIALTY CLASSES: LIBRARY 

Junior High students enjoyed shopping at 

this year’s Scholastic Book Fair in May. 

Thanks to the support of the entire Villa 

community, sales grossed over $9,000 

resulting in a nice profit for our library to 

add more great and informative books. 

SPECIALTY CLASSES: SPANISH 

Villa Spanish students traveled to the 

Dominican Republic for a mission trip in June. 

Hank Gerhardt shared, “Traveling to the 

Dominican Republic was not only an amazing 

experience but also an eye-opening one. While 

there we helped teach kids ages 4-12 English 

and Spanish literacy. I particularly enjoyed 

hanging out with the locals during our free time 

and watching how much the kids learned in the 

four days that we taught them.”

As we close this school year, I am

future of St. Ursula Villa. 

First however, I would like to 

congratulate our Class of 2013. They

outstanding young men and women 

representing the Villa Values.

nurtured these students along the 

way. To St. Ursula Villa’s entire staff

high growth and maturation. They 

are a testament to your dedication

Ursula Villa remains strong. 

Operational costs, including an 

ever-changing healthcare landscape, 

will challenge us, as will the need to 

invest in our facility while 

remaining committed to our excellent 

programs. It’s a sizeable task. I am 

confident however that our faith in 

God as guided by our Usuline 

heritage will insure our continued 

success. Throughout history, St. 

Angela Merici and the Ursulines 

faced many challenges and 

uncertainties and we are inspired 

by them. Our commitment to faith 

and to serve others has guided us 

and will continue to guide us on our 

journey. 

The upcoming school year promises 

to be a great next step for St. Ursula 

Villa’s future. Thank you all for your 

continued support, interest, and 

service to the Villa. May God bless

conference inspires teachers from 

pre-kindergarten through grade 

6 with new ideas and pedagogical 

techniques. 

Jacquie Berting (4th Grade 

Science, Social Studies, Math) will 

take a graduate level course on 

Ecological Conservation and 

Reintroduction of Endangered 

Species through Miami University 

of Ohio which includes a 10-day 

field expedition to Hawaii. 

Tim Rogers (Junior High Language 

Arts) will renew his teaching license 

through classes at Xavier University. 

Tim is excited to have his son, W. 

Gus Smith-Rogers, accompany him 

to the Villa as Gus joins the Multi- 

Age preschool classroom. 

Charlotte Loflin (Music) will 

receive her Level II certification in 

Orff Schulwerk at Miami University. 

Orff Schulwerk is total, active 

involvement in music making that 

incorporates speech, singing, 

movement, and instrument 

playing in a creative environment. 

It develops the whole child with a 

balance of emotional and intellectual 

stimulation. 

A Fond Farewell to Sr. Margie 

An exciting next step awaits Sr. 

Margie Efkeman, OSU as she 

retires from St Ursula Villa to 

commit more of her considerable 

energy to her position as General 

Minister of the Ursulines of 

Cincinnati. 

“I bid farewell, but not good-bye, 

to the Villa with some sadness but 

also with a grateful, hopeful spirit. 

My relationship with the Villa goes 

back almost to its founding, but the 

last thirteen years have been the 

most intimate. I’ve been humbled 

and privileged as the school counselor 

to walk with individuals and 

families through some most difficult 

times and experiences. I am grateful 

for their openness and trust,” 

writes Sr. Margie as she concludes 

her remarkable tenure as St. Ursula 

Villa’s school counselor. 

Sr. Margie has had a long and 

wonderful connection with the 

Villa. Having twice lived in the 

Manor House, she recalls washing 

the building windows and fleet of 

cars weekly with the other “Junior 

Sisters” in the late 1960’s and using 

the Manor House as classrooms 

when she and others lived on the 

third floor in the 1980’s. In 1992, 

she joined the Villa’s newly-formed 

Ursuline Identity Committee and 

has served as a key member of that 

committee ever since. Her many 

roles grew to include serving as 

member of St. Ursula Villa Board of 

Trustees and becoming the Villa’s 

school counselor in 2000. 

As counselor, Sr. Margie worked 

with students in friendship groups 

to develop social skills, led 

classroom activities to identify and 

validate emotions, facilitated small 

groups for families in transition, 

and supported students’ different 

learning styles and issues. “One 

legacy of which I am proud is the 

Villa’s commitment to the 

Discipline with Purpose process,” 

commented Sr. Margie. “Upon my 

first introduction to it, I recognized 

the ‘fit’ of Discipline With Purpose’s 

fifteen developmental life skills 

with our Ursuline educational 

characteristics. Full implementation 

of DWP has truly been a team effort. 

It has become part of our identity 

and I count on it to live on as a 

vehicle for carrying out our Ursuline 

mission.” Mary-Cabrini Durkin, 

an Ursuline in the Company of 

St. Ursula, shares, “Within her 

spiritual family, Sister Margie’s 

service has included the ministry 

of spiritual formation for new 

members. She also served on the 

Ursulines’ leadership Council and 

is now the community’s General 

Minister.” As General Minister of 

the Ursulines of of Cincinnati, Sr. 

Margie will care for elders and, 

among other roles, will “continue 

the dialogue of the future of our 

community in the context of 

religious life in the United States.” 

While the Villa will no longer have 

an Ursuline sister as an active 

faculty member, Sr. Margie will 

continue to serve on the St. Ursula 

Villa Ursuline Identity Committee. 

Further commemoration of her 

dedication to the Villa is a new 

graduation award, the “Sr. Margie 

Efkeman, OSU, Ursuline Identity 

Award” which will be given in her 

honor to a deserving eighth grader.

Life came full circle for 

Ashley Keller ‘00, Program 

Director of Boys Hope Girls 

Hope of Cincinnati, when she 

recently contacted St. Ursula 

Villa about possible enrollment 

of a BHGH student. Ashley 

joined the Villa in 1998 as a 

7th grader in BHGH’s 

inaugural class of female 

scholars. Ashley believes her 

current mindset of holding 

herself to higher standards 

and putting her best foot 

forward came from her experience at the Villa, where she 

was warmly welcomed by classmates and their parents 

and always included in Villa events.Ashley’s academic 

success continued through Saint Ursula Academy and 

Saint Louis University. She later combined graduate 

school with a role as a residential counselor when Boys 

Hope Girls Hope established a home for female scholars 

in Baltimore. Returning to Cincinnati as BHGH Program 

Director has been a positive experience. Ashley values the 

strong, successful bond between St. Ursula Villa and the 

Boys Hope Girls Hope program, stating “I know first-hand 

how well a Villa education will serve them later in life.” 

Elizabeth Shirey ‘02 is going into her final year of law 

school at UCLA and interning at the Department of Justice 

in Washington, DC for the summer. “After the Villa, I 

went to SUA and then moved to Sacramento, where I 

graduated from another Catholic girls’ school. I graduated 

from Wellesley College in 2010, worked in DC, and then 

went to law school. Would love to get back to Cincy more!” 

Michelle Kimutis ‘03 just finished her first year as a 

middle school English teacher at a private PK-12 school 

in Gainesville, FL. “I also just started my Mary Kay 

business!” 

Cameron Kurz ‘03 has lived in Louisville, KY for the 

last 2 years after graduating in 2011 from the University 

of Wisconsin in Madison with a degree in Human 

Development and Family Studies. “I work for a private 

foster care agency in Louisville as a home resource 

coordinator, training and recruiting foster parents for 

youth ages 0-21 in Kentucky.” 

Liza Druck ‘04 is working in Cincinnati politics, currently 

as Finance Director on the Qualls for Mayor campaign. 

Michael Basil ‘05 continued his remarkable baseball 

career by helping Indiana University advance in the 

College World Series after a very impressive high school 

baseball season as a St. Xavier Bomber.

“Grand-students” Join the Villa 

The term “grand-students” is Villa teachers’ affectionate name for Villa students who are children of 

Villa alumni. The upcoming 2013-14 school year will include nine new grand-students ranging from 

3-year-old to 7th grade. The Class of 1998 enjoyed a reunion of sorts at the recent New Parent 

Orientation where they discovered that three of their children are all joining the Villa’s 3-year-old 

programs and will be members of the Class of 2024!
