NEW aAa WEBSITE
Dairy cattle have been analyzed for nearly 60 years through the use of aAa. It began with one
man and has become the industry standard in correcting mating practices due to its results that
are now in global demand. A new website, www.aaa123456.com, has been launched to aid producers
worldwide to sort out, select and use the better bulls on their cattle. aAa Animal Analysis
was created and developed by William A. "Bill" Weeks, North Clarendon, Vermont, in the late
1940s and early 1950s. The new website gives direct access to 22 aAa approved analyzers who
provide the dairy cattle breeding guide in 24 countries. Dairy producers and AI semen marketing
organizations will also discover free online access to the offi cial aAa Weeks analysis numbers
of bulls. This global master fi le is maintained by Weeks Analysis under the direction of James E.
Sarbacker at their international offi ce near Madison, WI.
"The Next Chapter for RWDCA"
The next chapter for the Red & White Dairy Cattle Association is just
beginning. After 34 years, we close one chapter of Red & White history
and open another. We greatly appreciate John and Joan's many years
of dedication to the RWDCA and as we reflect on all of their memorable
years, they will be missed dearly! We are privileged to have had the
opportunity to learn from the best as we begin our exciting journey with
the RWDCA. Also, thank you to Audrey, Ronda and Glenda Jo!
Our first memories of Red & Whites began at a young age as we hoped
that our 1st 4-H calves would indeed have that desired Red & White heifer
calf. Our favorite cow was an old Triple Threat daughter (pictured) that
attended several fairs and shows and proved herself by her EX-93-4E
classification. Also pictured is an EX Cashier.
Over the course of the past few months, we have met several Red
breeders and shared many conversations about Red genetics and the
future of the RWDCA.
We are excited to begin this new chapter with the RWDCA and look
forward to the opportunities and responsibilities that are in store for
us. Again, we would like to thank everyone for their help and support
throughout the transition!
Stephanie & Nicole Stout
RWDCA Executive Managers
President’s Message
"New Beginnings" for RWDCA
We just finished a very successful
annual meeting of the RWDCA in
Hagerstown, Maryland. We honored John
and Joan Carpenter, our editor and executive
secretary retiring after 34 years of service to
our association. Many wonderful comments
by our members at the banquet let them
know how much we have appreciated
all they have done for the RWDCA. The
employees presented them with a scrapbook
of pictures taken during their tenure with the
RWDCA. Again, we wish them well in their
retirement.
On Thursday evening we had a
reception for Stephanie, Nicole, John and
Joan. It was a good time and a chance for our members to visit with
each other and talk with our new managers. Stephanie and Nicole
have big shoes to fi ll but I know they will be successful.
The convention sale, managed by Matt Lawrence averaged over
$5,300. This was by far the highest average we have ever had and
I know the buyers will be pleased with the quality of all the animals
I saw tied in the sale barn. An excellent job by Matt and his crew in
preparing the cattle.
We had many people in attendance that I have not seen for some
time and it was good to visit with everyone and to listen to their many
stories and memories of John and Joan Carpenter.
The popularity of Red and Whites is growing all the time with
many new members. Let’s all make them feel welcome and a part of
our organization. Encourage the youth as they will be the future of our
breed.
Jerry Good,
President RWDCA
Lion King's Dam
Daughter
The O-Man is the oldest and currently has a +1957 CTPI and +621 $NM with 2
sons heading to studs. The September Storms have done well with one VG-86
as a 2-year-old, +8500 for milk , red carrier and being fl ushed. Another was sold
to Emerald Acres and is GP-83 and will make 30,000 and 1,000 fat as a 2-yearold.
The Murphy's include one GP-81 and milking very well and the best full sister
died after calving with a heifer. The fi nal natural calf by Goldwyn developed into a
stunning 2-year-old that is making a big record. She scored VG-86 as a 2-year-old
and has one son going to stud. She just sold in the National Holstein convention
sale in Wisconsin for $20,000 to Second Look Holsteins."
#1 Debut
This Paradox son joins the Red/RC TPI list at the top with an exciting +1743
TPI, delivering both terrifi c production @ +2209M +57F +60P and solid type @
+1.92. His reliabilities are well over 80% with 71 daughters in production and 55
daughters classifi ed and he will add more daughters on upcoming summaries. He
becomes the highest-rated Red/RC sire on the new Holstein Top 100 TPI list @
#60, followed by the top Red sire Lawn Boy P @ #70. Congratulations to Select
Sires, who now offer the #1 RC and # 1 and #2 TPI Red sires. Select Sires has
made a dedicated long term effort to develop breed-improving Red and RC sires
that will appeal to ALL markets, and their efforts are now paying clear dividends.
Their Red program should be applauded by all Red breeders and adopted by
those AI companies that have devoted less effort to developing a balanced Red
program to meet the growing demand both here and around the world.
A Paradox Son with a Twist
While many Red/RC Paradox sons have received summaries, Lion King not
only handily tops them, but is unique in two ways. First, he has a very different
maternal line that is 13 generations deep and features some well-known black &
white sires not often found in Red pedigrees. His dam is an Etazon Addison that
scored VG-86 VG-MS @ 2Y and produced 2-01 365d 29,722 3.3% 982 3.1% 917.
Addison was a son of Mountain from a Bell Elton dam. Lion King's grandam was
EX-90 EX-MS with records to 4-07 353d 27,273 3.9% 1008 3.2% 875 and lifetime
111,261 3.6% 4061 3.1% 3500. Her sire was Juniper Secret Ohio, a Secret from a
Valiant. The 3rd dam was VG-87 EX-MS with 132,961 4.0% 5263 3.2% 4250. The
next 2 dams were also VG with top production. Behind that are 8 more generations
that include an EX-90-3E and 4 Very Goods.
The Ra-Mar-Land herd at Denmark, WI is owned by Steve Selner, a brother
of Dr. Dave Selner. Dave spent many years in AI, is a fi xture at World Dairy Expo
and has always taken an interest in Red & Whites and the RWDCA. In fact, he
received the RWDCA's most prestigious award, the Albrecht Distinguished Service
Award, in 1997. Dave is very involved in the herd and makes the mating decisions.
He had the following observations on the dam, Lorelei, and the family: "Lorelei was
a tremendously growthy animal from day one. Always eating. When she started
milking, we had never had an offi cial 100 lb. a day 2-year-old until she produced
113 lbs. the fi rst month and kept at that 100+ level for 7 months. Just an incredible
wet cow that fi nished +10,000 over herdmates. She came from a family that was
always plus to herdmates and often the milkiest and typiest cows we had. I like
to say she is the third generation "best cow" in the barn. Her grandam, then dam
and then Lorelei were the best cows of their time. Further back were two more
VG dams with one, Lucy, being another "best cow" in the barn ranking. Needless
to say, we started to get contracts and do flushes. We were not too successful
at fi rst, as she was just milking too well, but she finally did work well enough to
put 5 more sons in studs and gave us 6 daughters from fl ushes. Her daughters
(Lion King's sisters) are by O-Man, Sept Storm (2), Murphy (2) and Goldwyn. This
took a little while and with her tremendous appetite, she became a very massive
cow standing 63 inches tall and weighing over a ton. We really wanted to breed
her back to see if we could get another generation of Excellent and another big
record. She conceived on fi rst service to a new bull named Goldwyn, but we had
let her get too fat and probably didn't know how to handle such an unusual cow.
When she calved in early December with a heifer calf, we were elated. She tried
to milk too much too quickly and had numerous health issues. She died about
three weeks later, a pretty sad Holiday season for all. The daughters developed
well and all have been successfully classifi ed while producing well.
Ra-Mar-Land Gold Lace (VG-86)
Ra-Mar-Land Sept Leaf-RC (VG-86)
In addition to his outcross blood for Red breeders, Lion King differs from all
other Paradox sons in his breeding pattern and type breakdown. His linear based
on 55 daughters indicates many strengths and no serious faults, daughters are tall
(1.87T) with very open rib (4.13O), wide rump (2.03W) with slight slope (0.63S),
legs with ideal side view (0.01C), excellent rear view (1.96S) and steep foot angle
(1.93S). Udders are outstanding with average depth (0.14S), strong cleft (2.97S),
snug fore udder with close teat placement and amazing rear udder height (3.30H)
and width (4.68W). Teats are slightly longer (0.89L). While many Paradox sons are
receiving top production summaries, most have the faults of their sire...higher pins
and/or below average feet and legs. Lion King stands alone as a high production
Paradox son with no type liabilities, based on his current data.
Charlie Will, Holstein Sire Program Manager at Select, adds the following,
"Lion King is a good looking individual scoring Excellent on fi rst classification. This
bull is a MAJOR LEAGUE milk sire with really good type. Daughters are silky, dairy
cows that can really milk and with a deep heel and exceptional rear udders and
teat placement. I would use him on Arrow daughters, something more smooth
and/or strong. He should also work on Marmax daughters to maintain the milk
and protect the strength. We will be using Lion King for Red sons."
There are 3 milking daughters at Ra-Mar-Land and Dave comments, " The
daughters follow the type pattern of Lion King's dam and the family. They are tall
with good bone quality, have average width and develop body depth with age.
They have very strong udder attachments both fore and rear and excellent teat
placement. They knew how to milk, and like the family, they are always eating."
Summary
Lion King is the best Paradox son to date and the most exciting new high
production sire in Red in some time. He is an obvious choice for Red sons and
an excellent mate for the smooth, wide cow. He will signifi cantly boost production
while improving both udders and feet & legs. He also sires ideal rumps with slight
slope. He is very average in management traits based on early data, including a
reliable 10 (slightly below average) on calving ease. He is lower in components,
though not extreme.
Final Thoughts
Dr. Selner adds some points of interest..."Lion King was the fi rst bull calf at
our farm sold to AI. We appreciate Select's interest. They have sampled him well
and developed him into a tall Excellent bull himself. I was disappointed when he
was born because I thought a female from this cross could be a great cow for
the future and infl uence the Red breed. I have always had an interest in Red and
wanted to develop a strong Red & White family by utilizing a top Red bull on a
strong black family. Of course, I never realized Lion King would turn out this well
and have the opportunity to infl uence the progress of the Red cow."
And what about that great name? "He was named by Steve's two daughters
because he was from our "L" family. If we received full price after he produced
semen, their Dad promised them a trip to Disney World in Orlando. Needless to
say, he passed the semen tests and they enjoyed their trip to Mickey's Place."
