If you haven’t seen Åland’s archipelago, you haven’t
seen Åland. But how do you get out to the outermost
islets? Whether you want to do a bit of spontaneous
island-hopping or undertake a carefully
planned expedition, your journey will begin in Hummelvik
or Långnäs. That’s where the archipelago
ferries are waiting.
Mariehamn, Southern Line to Kökar
Your journey begins in Mariehamn and you want to head out into
the southern archipelago to somewhere like Kökar. Drive to the
ferry terminal in Långnäs, about 30 km away. The entire ferry journey
takes about two and a half hours.
From Långnäs you will take the ferry that travels along the
Southern Line. The first stop is Föglö, with its varied landscapes and
picturesque inlets. Further out in the archipelago lies Sottunga, the
smallest municipality in all of Finland, and Kökar with its amazing
natural landscapes, sights and destinations to visit.
Mariehamn, Northern Line to Brändö
Drive from Mariehamn to the ferry terminal on Vårdö, about 46
km away. That’s where the archipelago ferry for the Northern Line
docks departs.
From Vårdö, with its old captain’s dwellings, you pass by the
archipelago municipalities of Kumlinge and Brändö on the way
towards Vuosnainen (Osnäs) in the Turunmaa (Åboland) region.
There are a number of harbours along the way where you can disembark
to have a look around, stay overnight, or head back. There
are delightful summer memories waiting to be discovered round
every inlet.

summer season it is highly recommended to make a reservation on
the archipelago ferries in advance. You’ll find details in the Åland
