SALMON, SEA TROUT AND
ARCHIPELAGO CROCODILES
Åland is well-known among seasoned anglers for its excellent pike fishing. Plenty
has been written in fishing publications about the pike fishing here to amaze even
experienced fishermen. The explanation, of course, is all the inlets and sounds that
provide the pike with the perfect conditions to play and grow.
The conditions in Åland are perfect for
sea trout fishing as well. Salmon trout
do well along the leopard-patterned
sandy sea beds. The area stretching from
Eckerö and Hammarudda to Mariehamn
is of particular interest. In the wintertime when the
water is still open, anglers cast off from land. From
mid-April to mid-May, it’s better to go out in a boat
for bait casting.
For those interested in big trophies, salmon is
where it’s at. Åland is located on the migratory path
for Baltic salmon, and they spend their adolescence
here. There are monster salmon in the 30-kilogram
class here all year round, but the peak season is
from May to June.
Trolling has been excellent in recent years, and
the catches in the “Trollingträff” competition have
broken records two years in a row. Sporting anglers
appreciate the short time it takes to get to fishing
waters, the large areas of fishing waters and the
opportunities to hire chartered boats.

Åland has three 18-hole golf courses. Åland Golf Club, one of the most popular
facilities in the Nordic countries, accounts for two of them. The third is located in
Eckerö near the harbour.
The 18-hole Castle Course and King’s
Course at Åland Golf Club are well-maintained.
Each has its very own character.
The Castle Course follows along a coastal
inlet, overlooked by Kastelholm Castle.
It offers an absolutely spectacular hole where your
ball has to cross over the inlet. The King’s Course,
which winds its way higher up inland, is a bit more
hilly and challenging. The club offers a complete
range of services, with a pleasant restaurant. You
can also rent the SkyCaddie, a GPS device that
calculates exact distances on the golf courses.
Eckerö is where you’ll find the third 18-hole course
with a pleasant feeling of meadows and woodland.
There’s also a short-hole course for beginners and
those who want to work on their short game. It’s
open to anyone who has attended a course of golf
lessons or is accompanied by someone with a Green
Card. The facility also includes a large driving range,
a pitch ring, a basic pro shop, hotel accommodation
and a pleasant restaurant.
