This is an unscientifically-selected list of things you shouldn’t miss in Åland. Of
course there are loads more to see and do, this you will definitely notice.
Kobba Klintar
A small islet by the entrance to Mariehamn’s
harbour with a former pilot’s station, museum, café
and theatre performances in the summer. Gives a
new meaning to the phrase “sea view”.
A seaside cottage with rowing boat and sauna
90 percent of rental cottages in Åland have a view
over the water, 97 percent have access to a rowing
boat and 83 percent have access to a sauna. Why
would you choose anything else?
Light summer nights
Don’t miss the light evenings and nights in June and
July. They give you lots of extra hours every day to
enjoy your leisure time. What’s more, Åland is often
at the top of the sunshine league table in the Nordic
countries for the period from June to August.
Källskär
Baron Fredrik Åkerhielm’s island of Källskär is proof
that anything is possible with the right amount of
determination. He created an oasis on this windswept
islet, where Finland-Swedish author Tove
Jansson, creator of the Moomins, and many other
great personages enjoyed spending time. Tour boat
departs from Kökar.
The Maritime Quarter
The task of the Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn is
to keep sailing skills alive. It is the home harbour of
many of Åland’s sailing boats and a place with a
true nautical atmosphere. You’ll also find a museum,
café and handicrafts in the red huts.
Ramsholmen
Fancy celebrating the rites of spring in an orgy of
blue anemones, wood anemones and cowslip? Then
visit the Ramsholmen nature reserve just outside
Mariehamn. A lovely footpath runs around the
perimeter of the area.
“Little Christmas”
Why settle for celebrating Christmas just once a
year? “Little Christmas” is a traditional taster of
the real thing, with Christmas markets, Christmas
foods and seasonal treats. It’s held every year on
the Saturday preceding the first Sunday in Advent.

The Pommern
The only four-masted barque in the world that’s still
in its original condition. Stand at the ship’s wheel
and imagine you’re trying to navigate through fourmetre-high
waves. The Pommern carried cargoes
such as wheat between Australia and England.
Maximum Midsummer
If you like Midsummer, Åland is the place to
celebrate it. The Midsummer poles are taller and
prettier here, the traditions more alive and access to
flowers virtually unlimited.
