WHAT, WHERE<br />

AND WHEN?<br />

It can be difficult to keep track of all the events held in<br />

<strong>Åland</strong> every year. There are events of every possible type,<br />

all year round and for all tastes. Everything from literature<br />

festivals to a Viking Market, from pop music festivals to<br />

organ recitals. Take a look at the list and then find out more<br />

EVENTS IN 2010<br />

4–7 Feb Mariehamn Winter Jazz. Top-class jazz<br />

from the Nordic countries. Small, intimate performances<br />

where the audience can really get close to<br />

the performers.<br />

4–6 Mar Vera Film Festival, Alandica. The largest<br />

festival of short films and documentaries in the<br />

Swedish speaking parts of Finland.<br />

19–21 Mar Mariehamn Literature Days. A place<br />

for authors and literature lovers from the Nordic<br />

and Baltic countries to meet.<br />

20–21 Mar Bridal & Party Fair. Two inspiring days<br />

that help you to succeed with your party arrangements.<br />

27 Jun–3 July <strong>Åland</strong> Organ Festival. <strong>Åland</strong>’s<br />

longest-running annual music event. Recitals in the<br />

atmospheric surroundings of <strong>Åland</strong>’s churches.<br />

2–3 July <strong>Åland</strong> Country Music Festival. A music<br />

festival for fans of country music and dancing.<br />

Great performers, excellent food and plenty of<br />

dancing.<br />

2–4 July Geta Poetry and Song. A unique festival<br />

for people who enjoy listening to poetry and music.<br />

9–11 July The Gustav Vasa days. Colourful family<br />

event which takes you back to the 16th century;<br />

plays, markets and other fun stuff.<br />

10–14 July Gig Boat Adventure. Traditional<br />

wooden motor boats travel together through the<br />

<strong>Åland</strong> archipelago, with exciting shore excursions.<br />

13 July Wooden boat meet in Degerby on Föglö.<br />

The starting point for the race to the Maritime<br />

Quarter in Mariehamn the following day.<br />

13–18 July <strong>Åland</strong> Sea Days. A major nautical and<br />

musical event. Sailing tours, motor boat <strong>com</strong>petition,<br />

wooden boat parade, sales of handicrafts,<br />

food & drink and lots of fun for the kids. Musical<br />

entertainment.<br />

16–17 July Island in the Sun. Festival on Jurmo<br />

for those who wish life was a pop song. Dip your<br />

toes in the sea and listen to modern music from<br />

<strong>Åland</strong>, Finland and Sweden.<br />

18 July Canal Party in Lemland. Party alongside<br />

the canal of Lemström to the east of Mariehamn.<br />

Market stalls, canoeing & kayaking displays, music<br />

and more.<br />

23–31 July Rockoff Festival. <strong>Åland</strong>’s biggest<br />

music event, with performances by major Finnish<br />

and Swedish acts.<br />

29–31 July Viking Market. The biggest event<br />

of its type in Finland, with over 300 “Vikings” and<br />

8000 visitors. Jesters, musicians, craftspeople, marketplace<br />

and food & drink.<br />

2–7 Aug Katrina Chamber Music. Annual chamber<br />

music concert series with everything from lunchtime<br />

and afternoon recitals to night-time concerts.<br />

5–7 Aug Alandia Jazz Festival. Well-known jazz<br />

festival with top class artists.<br />

6–7 Aug Voices for the Baltic Sea. Harmonious<br />

charity concert for the health of the Baltic Sea.<br />

Great artists, beautiful music.<br />

7 Aug Red Cross Market in Mariehamn. Find a<br />

bargain at this traditional market.<br />

7–8 Aug The Bomarsund days. An 1850s market<br />

is held near the fortress ruins of Bomarsund with<br />

food, theatre, handcraft demonstrations and tours.<br />

18–22 Aug Paf Open. Beach Volley tournament<br />

that’s being held in <strong>Åland</strong> for the third time. Part of<br />

the international World Cup.<br />

17–19 Sep <strong>Åland</strong> Harvest Festival. During Friday<br />

and Saturday visit over 30 farms. Fill up your shopping<br />

baskets on Sunday at the harvest market at<br />

<strong>Åland</strong>’s rural centre (Landsbygdscentrum).<br />

27 Nov “Little Christmas” market at the Jan<br />

Karlsgården open-air museum in Sund.<br />

5–6 Dec Traditional Christmas market at the<br />

market square in Mariehamn.<br />
