I have travelled around the world, but 

there is no destination that beats my 

Åland. On the other hand, I am biased, 

since I am an Ålander born and bread. 

But I would still think that the Åland archipelago 

is the most beautiful place 

in the world even if I hadn’t been born 

here. 

If I could, I would show you all of my favourite 

places, each and every little islet and 

introduce you to all my summer neighbours. 

Since that is not really possible, this brochure 

will have to serve as a sort of display window, 

where we show you a selection of what Åland has 

to offer. Many of these favourites are located out 

on Åland’s smaller islands. That is why my very first 

recommendation is to head out into the archipelago.It 

is easy and doesn’t cost much and there are 

loads of islands to investigate - 6500 islands and 

islets in all. 

Over the following pages we will show you the 

easiest ways to get out into the archipelago.

If you haven’t seen Åland’s archipelago, you haven’t 

seen Åland. But how do you get out to the outermost 

islets? Whether you want to do a bit of spontaneous 

island-hopping or undertake a carefully 

planned expedition, your journey will begin in Hummelvik 

or Långnäs. That’s where the archipelago 

ferries are waiting. 

Mariehamn, Southern Line to Kökar 

Your journey begins in Mariehamn and you want to head out into 

the southern archipelago to somewhere like Kökar. Drive to the 

ferry terminal in Långnäs, about 30 km away. The entire ferry journey 

takes about two and a half hours. 

From Långnäs you will take the ferry that travels along the 

Southern Line. The first stop is Föglö, with its varied landscapes and 

picturesque inlets. Further out in the archipelago lies Sottunga, the 

smallest municipality in all of Finland, and Kökar with its amazing 

natural landscapes, sights and destinations to visit. 

Mariehamn, Northern Line to Brändö 

Drive from Mariehamn to the ferry terminal on Vårdö, about 46 

km away. That’s where the archipelago ferry for the Northern Line 

docks departs. 

From Vårdö, with its old captain’s dwellings, you pass by the 

archipelago municipalities of Kumlinge and Brändö on the way 

towards Vuosnainen (Osnäs) in the Turunmaa (Åboland) region. 

There are a number of harbours along the way where you can disembark 

to have a look around, stay overnight, or head back. There 

are delightful summer memories waiting to be discovered round 

every inlet. 

Book your archipelago ferry journey in advance During the peak 

summer season it is highly recommended to make a reservation on 

the archipelago ferries in advance. You’ll find details in the Åland 

Archipelago Ferry Timetables brochure which you can order or 

download from visitaland.com under the “Facts” menu. Copies are 

also available from the Åland Tourist Association at Storagatan 8 

in Mariehamn.

CONVERSATION WITH 

A KÖKAR RESIDENT 

When you go for a walk on Kökar, you may well find yourself wondering what it 

would be like to live on a small island all year round. All the good and bad habits 

you’ve developed on the mainland – would they be replaced by better ones? Would 

the power of nature feel more important than big-city conveniences like having a 

pizzeria and video rental shop nearby? 

We had an opportunity to chat with Jan-Erik Dahlgren, 

a resident of Kökar. Unlike his wife Britta, Jan- 

Erik is not a native of the island. He came to Kökar 

in 1955 as a teacher and worked here for ten years. 

Then he spent fifteen years on the main island of 

Åland before returning to Kökar to serve as the 

headmaster of the island’s lower secondary school. 

“It’s marvellous to be here all year round. Today 

we went out in the dinghy and caught a pike that 

we’re going to fry for supper tonight. That might 

not sound so remarkable if you haven’t done it 

yourself, but it’s an amazing outdoor experience. 

The archipelago around Kökar is indescribable; 

you’ve just got to experience it. It’s so different. I’m 

sure that has to do with age. The older you get, the 

more you enjoy the great outdoors,” Jan-Erik said. 

“But we meet a lot of people here, too,” he continued. 

“Here on Kökar, you chat with everybody. 

There are a few of us who get together regularly 

to play pitch, a card game, but it’s mostly idle chat 

really. And there’s plenty of culture for people on 

Kökar too. There are music groups, violin classes, 

choirs – everything. I never miss out on going elk 

hunting. This year our quota is fourteen elk. So we 

have got a few elk here.” 

In 2008, Brudhäll Karlby was awarded the title 

of Finland’s Guest Harbour of the Year. When did 

you start the business? 

“We started with the guest harbour itself. It was 

built in the mid-’80s. At that time, my wife Britta 

and her sister Mona ran a little restaurant on the 

ground floor of our house. Along with the new guest 

harbour came more visitors, and they outgrew the 

restaurant. In 1991, the same year I retired from 

the school, the Brudhäll Hotel & Restaurant opened 

for business. Our idea was to have the hotel right by 

the dock, but the actual design was done by Folke 

Wickström, at the time the city architect in Mariehamn. 

He thought it was an interesting project.” 

What was it that made the judges choose Brudhäll 

Karlby as the Guest Harbour of the Year for 

2008? 

“The reasoning behind the award was the service 

and the peaceful surroundings. We go out and 

personally greet each boat that arrives in the guest 

harbour. We talk to the guests and make sure they 

feel welcome. I’ve heard that some sailors who were 

quoted in Helsinki’s Hufvudstadsbladet newspaper 

said that breakfast at Brudhäll is an absolute must 

for anyone who’s in the Åland archipelago,” Jan-Erik 

said. 

“And besides,” he added, “it doesn’t matter which 

way the wind is blowing – we’re sheltered from any 

winds here.”

1. Källskär. Take a boat excursion to Baron Åkerhielm’s 

oasis on the windswept island of Källskär. 

Among his guests were Finnish-Swedish author Tove 

Jansson, creator of the Moomin stories. 

2. Peace and quiet. Go to the western tip of Kökar 

and watch the sunset across the sea. 

3. Hamnö on Kökar. One of the most remarkable 

places in the archipelago. It was the site of a 

Franciscan monastery up until the Reformation. The 

present church was built in 1784. 

4. The fishing villages on Kökars Ören and 

Mörskär.

A LITTLE 

HARBOUR TOWN, 

JAM-PACKED 

WITH MEMORIES 

Mariehamn is not a big city. During the month of July you could describe it as a 

pocket-sized entertainment capital. For the rest of the year it’s a cosy small 

town with maritime traditions. 

The seafaring town of Mariehamn was 

founded in 1861 and was named after 

the Russian tsarina Maria. The town has 

the shipping business to thank for its 

prosperity. At one time, Mariehamn was 

home to the world’s largest fleet of sailing ships. 

Nowdays you can still go aboard the Pommern 

museum ship. Before it was decommissioned, the 

Pommern transported cargoes of wheat between 

Australia and England. 

It’s a pleasant stroll through Mariehamn from 

the western harbour across to the eastern harbour. 

Although the town’s stock of older wooden houses 

was significantly reduced in the 1960s, there are 

still many lovely wooden houses to see. Start your 

walk by the western harbour, north of the Pommern. 

That’s the site of the Åland sailing club’s guest 

harbour and the Pavilion, an early building designed 

by the architect Lars Sonck. 

From there, continue walking eastwards. There 

are many houses with pretty decorative details 

designed by Finland’s first female building engineer, 

Hilda Hongell. 

A few blocks from the eastern harbour you’ll find 

the entertainment district, home to places like the 

Indigo Restaurant & Bar, Dino’s Bar & Grill and the 

Hotel Arkipelag with its restaurant and nightclub. 

Now you can see the eastern harbour. Set your 

course for the masts of the sailing boats, and you’ll 

reach the Maritime Quarter. Alongside the boats 

you’ll find a museum, an organic café and several 

shops selling arts and crafts in the little red huts. 

Handmade items from Åland make great souvenirs. 


SANDY BEACH 

OR ROCKY CLIFFS 

Everybody has got their own preferences 

for swimming. A sandy beach is nice for 

small children. Warm, gently rounded 

granite rocks to sunbathe on and dive 

from are another highlight. The main thing 

is that there’s sunshine, and there is. Summertime 

Åland has more hours of sunshine 

than most other places in the Nordic countries.

JUDY KUITUNEN 

IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD 

TO CREATE ENERGY 

In the Seventies, Judy Bradley, a young ceramic artist, was working in a small 

workshop in the East End of London. After a romantic misfortune, she longed for 

a change of scene. In a magazine for ceramic artists she noticed two adverts: one 

for a job in Finland, and one in Iceland. Finland sounded a bit less cold, so she sent 

off an application. A few months later, Jussi Mäkelä appeared and told her that 

Gustavs in Finland was the place to be. She worked there for a while. Later on they 

moved to Åland and got married. 

It’s now over thirty years later, and Judy has put 

down even deeper roots in Åland. Today Judy lives 

with a different Jussi, whose surname is Kuitunen. 

She has two children as well as her own ceramics 

studio and shop. 

Have you ever regretted moving to Åland? 

“I was ready to go back once, thinking about 

moving back to London. I love London. But when I 

thought about the children and everything, Åland is 

hard to beat,” she said. 

How did you get into ceramics? 

“I come from an artistic family. My grandmother 

Hellen Bradley was a popular artist in England 

and was well-known in other countries as well. 

My grandfather was also an artist who worked in 

various media including textiles. We had always 

expressed ourselves creatively in our family, and I 

was lucky enough to get a scholarship to a good 

art school. That was when I decided to go into 

ceramics. Right from the start I loved working with 

ceramics,” Judy explained. 

What sorts of people visit your shop? 

“Every kind. The chief of police rang me up one 

evening just before five o’clock and asked if I 

was still open, because Finland’s President Tarja 

Halonen wanted to come for a visit. It’s only here 

in Åland that the President can go out without a 

huge team of bodyguards and all the streets closed 

off. She came in and looked around just like anyone 

else and bought one of my bowls with a lemon 

design. The same design that has been depicted on 

a postage stamp in Åland. Ambassadors’ wives and 

performers from the Alandica concert hall have also 

visited my shop , Judy recalls. 

“Of course it’s mainly tourists in the summer. 

Many English-speaking tourists are steered my 

way. Some people know me from TV. I’ve been on 

a cookery programme with Michael Björklund, Sara 

La Fountain and Tina Nordström, on the interior 

decorating programme “Kesä T.i.l.a” on Finland’s 

channel MTV3 and “Single Mum Seeks …” on TV3 

in Sweden.” 

“Other than that, I think many Ålanders have 

at least one of my pieces. Ålanders are important, 

because they’re here all year round,” Judy noted. 

The tourists who visit your shop – what do they 

think of Åland? 

“They are mainly positive, curious and they have 

a lot of questions. I generally view myself as an 

ambassador for Åland. I usually point them towards 

places I like myself: Silverskär with its hermit cabin, 

which is lovely; Kvarnbo guesthouse, Hotel HavsVidden 

and the natural scenery there; the Amorina 

Chocolaterie which is run by Mercedes; and the 

Café Bönan where you can have an organic meal or 

snack,” Judy listed. 

Do you think you’ll stay put in Åland now? 

“I probably will, but who knows what the future will 

bring? What did I know about Åland when I lived in 

London?” Judy laughed.

A unique experience I wouldn’t miss for 

the world. There’s a great group of people 

there, and it’s fun to go there every year.”

longest-running annual music event. Recitals in the

festival for fans of country music and dancing. 

Great performers, excellent food and plenty of 

dancing. 

2–4 July Geta Poetry and Song. A unique festival 

for people who enjoy listening to poetry and music. 

9–11 July The Gustav Vasa days. Colourful family 

event which takes you back to the 16th century; 

plays, markets and other fun stuff. 

10–14 July Gig Boat Adventure. Traditional 

wooden motor boats travel together through the 

Åland archipelago, with exciting shore excursions. 

13 July Wooden boat meet in Degerby on Föglö. 

The starting point for the race to the Maritime 

Quarter in Mariehamn the following day. 

13–18 July Åland Sea Days. A major nautical and 

musical event. Sailing tours, motor boat competition, 

wooden boat parade, sales of handicrafts, 

food & drink and lots of fun for the kids. Musical 

entertainment. 

16–17 July Island in the Sun. Festival on Jurmo 

for those who wish life was a pop song. Dip your 

toes in the sea and listen to modern music from 

Åland, Finland and Sweden. 

18 July Canal Party in Lemland. Party alongside 

the canal of Lemström to the east of Mariehamn. 

Market stalls, canoeing & kayaking displays, music 

and more. 

23–31 July Rockoff Festival. Åland’s biggest 

music event, with performances by major Finnish 

and Swedish acts. 

29–31 July Viking Market. The biggest event 

of its type in Finland, with over 300 “Vikings” and 

8000 visitors. Jesters, musicians, craftspeople, marketplace 

and food & drink. 

2–7 Aug Katrina Chamber Music. Annual chamber 

music concert series with everything from lunchtime 

and afternoon recitals to night-time concerts. 

5–7 Aug Alandia Jazz Festival. Well-known jazz 

festival with top class artists. 

6–7 Aug Voices for the Baltic Sea. Harmonious 

charity concert for the health of the Baltic Sea. 

Great artists, beautiful music. 

7 Aug Red Cross Market in Mariehamn. Find a 

bargain at this traditional market. 

7–8 Aug The Bomarsund days. An 1850s market 

is held near the fortress ruins of Bomarsund with 

food, theatre, handcraft demonstrations and tours. 

18–22 Aug Paf Open. Beach Volley tournament 

that’s being held in Åland for the third time. Part of 

the international World Cup. 

17–19 Sep Åland Harvest Festival. During Friday 

and Saturday visit over 30 farms. Fill up your shopping 

baskets on Sunday at the harvest market at 

Åland’s rural centre (Landsbygdscentrum).

MISS 

This is an unscientifically-selected list of things you shouldn’t miss in Åland. Of 

course there are loads more to see and do, this you will definitely notice. 

Kobba Klintar 

A small islet by the entrance to Mariehamn’s 

harbour with a former pilot’s station, museum, café 

and theatre performances in the summer. Gives a 

new meaning to the phrase “sea view”. 

A seaside cottage with rowing boat and sauna 

90 percent of rental cottages in Åland have a view 

over the water, 97 percent have access to a rowing 

boat and 83 percent have access to a sauna. Why 

would you choose anything else? 

Light summer nights 

Don’t miss the light evenings and nights in June and 

July. They give you lots of extra hours every day to 

enjoy your leisure time. What’s more, Åland is often 

at the top of the sunshine league table in the Nordic 

countries for the period from June to August. 

Källskär 

Baron Fredrik Åkerhielm’s island of Källskär is proof 

that anything is possible with the right amount of 

determination. He created an oasis on this windswept 

islet, where Finland-Swedish author Tove 

Jansson, creator of the Moomins, and many other 

great personages enjoyed spending time. Tour boat 

departs from Kökar. 

The Maritime Quarter 

The task of the Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn is 

to keep sailing skills alive. It is the home harbour of 

many of Åland’s sailing boats and a place with a 

true nautical atmosphere. You’ll also find a museum, 

café and handicrafts in the red huts. 

Ramsholmen 

Fancy celebrating the rites of spring in an orgy of 

blue anemones, wood anemones and cowslip? Then 

visit the Ramsholmen nature reserve just outside 

Mariehamn. A lovely footpath runs around the 

perimeter of the area. 

“Little Christmas” 

Why settle for celebrating Christmas just once a 

year? “Little Christmas” is a traditional taster of 

the real thing, with Christmas markets, Christmas

Winter is the time when the archipelago is perhaps at its 

most beautiful, in a muted palette of colours: a warm grey 

sea, delicate shades of brown, red granite and patches of 

snow here and there. A perfect scene for lovely walks, longdistance 

skating, visits to art exhibitions and shops selling 

handmade goods. 

And why not do as the Ålanders do and celebrate Christmas 

twice? Every year on the day before the first Sunday in 

Advent, people celebrate “Little Christmas” with a Little 

Christmas tree, Little Christmas presents and a special 

Christmas market. 


SALMON, SEA TROUT AND 

ARCHIPELAGO CROCODILES 

Åland is well-known among seasoned anglers for its excellent pike fishing. Plenty 

has been written in fishing publications about the pike fishing here to amaze even 

experienced fishermen. The explanation, of course, is all the inlets and sounds that 

provide the pike with the perfect conditions to play and grow. 

The conditions in Åland are perfect for 

sea trout fishing as well. Salmon trout 

do well along the leopard-patterned 

sandy sea beds. The area stretching from 

Eckerö and Hammarudda to Mariehamn 

is of particular interest. In the wintertime when the 

water is still open, anglers cast off from land. From 

mid-April to mid-May, it’s better to go out in a boat 

for bait casting. 

For those interested in big trophies, salmon is 

where it’s at. Åland is located on the migratory path 

for Baltic salmon, and they spend their adolescence 

here. There are monster salmon in the 30-kilogram 

class here all year round, but the peak season is 

from May to June. 

Trolling has been excellent in recent years, and 

the catches in the “Trollingträff” competition have 

broken records two years in a row. Sporting anglers 

appreciate the short time it takes to get to fishing 

waters, the large areas of fishing waters and the 

opportunities to hire chartered boats. 

No matter what type of fishing you’re interested 

in, a fishing guide is a short cut to achieving fishing 

success. Guides can also assist with equipment, 

boats and fishing licences.

GREENS 

AND SEA VIEWS 

Åland has three 18-hole golf courses. Åland Golf Club, one of the most popular 

facilities in the Nordic countries, accounts for two of them. The third is located in 

Eckerö near the harbour. 

The 18-hole Castle Course and King’s 

Course at Åland Golf Club are well-maintained. 

Each has its very own character. 

The Castle Course follows along a coastal 

inlet, overlooked by Kastelholm Castle. 

It offers an absolutely spectacular hole where your 

ball has to cross over the inlet. The King’s Course, 

which winds its way higher up inland, is a bit more 

hilly and challenging. The club offers a complete 

range of services, with a pleasant restaurant. You 

can also rent the SkyCaddie, a GPS device that 

calculates exact distances on the golf courses. 

Eckerö is where you’ll find the third 18-hole course 

with a pleasant feeling of meadows and woodland. 

There’s also a short-hole course for beginners and 

those who want to work on their short game. It’s 

open to anyone who has attended a course of golf 

lessons or is accompanied by someone with a Green 

Card. The facility also includes a large driving range, 

a pitch ring, a basic pro shop, hotel accommodation 

and a pleasant restaurant. 


THE 

“SIX THOUSAND ISLANDS” 

EXPEDITION 

Five young men set out on an expedition 

through Åland’s archipelago. They have 

a white-tailed eagle as a guide. 

JOURNAL ENTRIES FROM THE ISLANDS 

Day 1 

Åland’s archipelago is a swarm of islands, and there’s no better way to get 

to know it than by kayak. 

Our expedition departs from Hamnsundet on Boxö. Our first strokes with 

the paddles are a bit unsteady as we set out towards Vårdö. After a while 

our bodies get used to the waves. Oskar and Johan paddle wearing Panama 

hats – they’ve got a bet as to who can keep his hat on the longest. 

“Check it out!” shouts Johan, the experienced climber, and heads for an 

island with a cliff that rises up out of the water. That’s our first campsite. 

Before we turn in for the night, Johan has conquered the cliff. A shout of joy 

rings out over the bare hillocks when he reaches the top of the cliff! 

Day 2 

After a hearty bowl of porridge, we head out towards Vårdö’s northeastern 

archipelago. The weather gods are on our side; the sun is shining and there 

is no wind. We have lunch near Väderskär, the island where the novels in the 

Åland-based Stormskärs-Maja series are set. Our thoughts wander to what 

life in the outer archipelago would have been like 100 years ago. 

We continue paddling southwards and see the reflections of the clouds 

and the islands in the still waters. Towards dusk we start to look for a 

campsite. Suddenly we see an owl perching on top of an islet, watching us. 

It spreads its wings majestically and sails off into the sky. The king of the air 

has shown us a campsite. As the moon rises above the sea, we enjoy a wellearned 

dinner: meat stew prepared by Oskar and Ville. Thankful for all the 

good food that the kayaks can hold in their cargo space, we dig into dessert. 

Day 3 

Early morning reveille. Mattias and Simon, who slept under the stars, wake 

us up. With a long stretch ahead of us today, we push the kayaks out as the 

sun casts its first rays over the surface of the water. We hit our stride with 

the paddles and make good time. At nine o’clock we stop for a morning 

swim and breakfast. The weather report on the radio calls for clear skies, 

sun, and a light northerly breeze. What a day we’ve got ahead of us. 

Day 4 

After yesterday’s long stretch, we cover a shorter distance today. We’ve 

come to the inner archipelago of Föglö and Embarsund. What a contrast to 

the stark islets in the Vårdö archipelago! 

We find a campsite in the early afternoon. The archipelago here is considered 

to be one of the most beautiful in Åland. Some of the lads go out 

snorkelling in the clear water. 

Evening falls, and the moonlight falls like a shimmering ribbon across the 

foot of our little hill where we’ve set up camp. We stay up late – there’s no 

reason to go to bed on a night like this. 

Day 5 

The sea is like a mirror for the fourth day in a row. This weather is incredible! 

We’ve checked out some islands way out at sea. There are no worries in 

weather like this. 

Along the way, Simon suddenly yells: “Seal!” It pops its curious head up 

just a dozen or so metres from us. 

The further out we go, the less frequent and more barren the islands 

become. The island where we set up camp has a fantastic view out over the 

Baltic. This is where we spend our last night, sleeping under the stars. We 

look up at the starry sky from our sleeping bags and fall asleep with a smile 

on our lips. What a week this has been! 

Tomorrow morning we’re going to paddle to Degerby, where our expedition 

will come to an end.

dining, entertainment, harbours and 

plenty of unique attractions are all within walking 

distance of the Alandica centre. 

But to get a real dose of energy it takes something 

more. That’s where conference organisers 

come in. Angling guides for hundreds of people, a 

cruise on a sailing vessel, golf with a sea view, Viking 

feasts, horseback riding, live entertainment, cookery 

courses with TV chefs and exotic kayak expeditions 

are just some of the things that can be arranged.

Most summer visitors that come to Åland choose to stay in a cottage. Around ninety 

percent of Åland’s cottages have a sea view, access to a rowing boat and a 

sauna. 

In Åland there are cottages to suit all holidaymakers– 

from rustic cabins to houses with all 

mod cons. You can even rent a whole island 

with a cottage, boat, and everything you 

need. But of course there are other types of 

accommodation as well. 

Most of the hotels in Åland are located in the 

centre of Mariehamn, within walking distance of 

entertainment opportunities, restaurants, cafés, 

handicrafts, attractions, and the town’s two 

harbours. One exception is the HavsVidden Hotel, 

which provides top-class accommodation in northern 

Åland, on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia. 

You’ll find guesthouses on the main island as well as 

some of the smaller islands. Campgrounds are scattered 

throughout Åland. Most of them are located 

close to the water.

try spending a couple of days in the Hermit’s 

Cottage on Silverskär. A luxury-class hermit’s life on

Ferries to Åland depart from Stockholm, 

Kapellskär and Grisslehamn in Sweden and 

from Turku (Åbo) and Helsinki in Finland. 

The shortest journey time from Sweden 

is two hours, and from Finland four hours. 

It’s also possible to travel from mainland Finland 

via the smaller archipelago ferries from Vuosnainen 

(Osnäs) and Galtby. 

The fastest way to travel is by plane from 

Stockholm Arlanda or Helsinki-Vantaa airports. 

Åland’s airport is just five minutes from the centre 

of Mariehamn.
