4.3 Community Liaison
4.3.1 Community Consultation
During the reporting period WCPL held four
Community Consultative Committee (CCC)
meetings. These meetings were conducted on;
26 th July 2011;
18 th October 2011;
21 st February 2012; and
22 nd May 2012.
Community representatives act as the point of
contact between the mine and the community. The
committee is made up of residents from the Jerry’s
Plains, Warkworth and South Wambo areas,
representatives of SSC and WCPL and is chaired
by an independent person. The DP&I endorsed the
composition of the committee in December 2005.
There was one publication of the Wambo Coal
Environment and Community Newsletter during the
reporting period. This was distributed to households,
the CCC and the workforce in November 2011. The
newsletter is intended to keep the community
informed about WCPL activities.
4.3.2 Information Sessions
WCPL plan to hold the next rounds of community
information sessions in August 2012 and February
2013. The sessions will build on our successful
face-to-face sessions in November-December 2011
and will be held at the School of Arts Hall in Jerrys
Plains. Any notifications of the information sessions
are provided in the Singleton Argus, posters at local
petrol stations and notification flyers distributed to
local areas.
4.3.3 Community Contributions
At the end of the 2011-2012 reporting period, WCPL
had provided in excess of $55,000 in support and
donations. This includes such programs as the
development of a bushtucker garden at Singleton
High School, educational support for Jerrys Plains
Public School, a new information board at Singleton
Heights Public School, as well as donations to the
Westpac Rescue Helicopter and numerous sporting
teams and clubs in the district.
Wambo also takes great pride in its ongoing
partnership with Singleton Council for the Hall of
Fame and Mayoral Scholarship programs.
As well as continuing support for these existing
programs, WCPL provided financial assistance for a
number of community activities. Projects and groups
sponsored included, but not limited to:
Singleton Pony Club
Sydney to Wollongong Charity Ride for
Multiple Sclerosis
Broke Public School
St Josephs High School
Jerrys Plains Public School
Giggle Ball – Camp Quality
Oxfam
Singleton Amateur Swimming Club
Singleton Chamber of Commerce & Industry
Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service
NAIDOC Family Fun Day; and
NSW Streetsmart Handbook.
4.3.4 Community Programs
Language Program
WCPL continued support through the language
program for Jerrys Plains Public School. The
language program was developed in consultation
with the school Principal and teaching staff during
the second half of 2008. After securing a highly
qualified speech pathologist to work with the
students at Jerrys Plains Public School, the
implementation of the program commenced during
Term 1 of 2009.
The language program operates in the school for
nine hours each Tuesday. The program involved a
