2011-2012 AEMR 2.5.1 Reject Management 2.5.1.1 Chemical and Physical Characteristics of Reject The CHPP beneficiates ROM coal to produce both a high energy steaming coal and a pulverised coal injection product, the by-product being reject made up of carbonaceous shale and waste rock material. The rejects represent approximately 30-35% of the ROM coal processed in the plant and are classified as either coarse or fine Coarse reject typically represent two-thirds of this material and is made up of

The TWMS was reviewed during the reporting period and a revised contract with the preferred licensed waste contractor commenced in December 2011. 2.6.1 Sewage Treatment and Disposal Sewage from the various areas of mining operation is treated in four onsite treatment systems as follows: CHPP Bathhouse – septic tank system which feeds to a transpiration area; CHPP Control Room – biocycle system; Administration Buildings – effluent system pumps to a transpiration dam located to the west of the complex; and North Wambo Underground Portal – effluent collection tank. The Wollemi Bathhouse and Facilities are no longer in use. The effluent treatment system is not operational and these facilities have now been decommissioned. Effluent treatment systems are inspected and maintained on a periodic basis to ensure effective operation. All effluent collected from the Underground portal is disposed of by a licensed contractor and records are maintained on site. 2.6.2 Rubbish Disposal Bulk garbage bins for each waste stream are located around site. These bins are collected and managed on a regular basis by a licensed waste contractor. For details of waste disposed and recycled during the reporting period please refer to Table 2.4. 2.6.3 Oily Waste Disposal Waste oils from the site are collected, stored and are removed by a licensed waste contractor on a periodic basis for reprocessing and reuse. For details of waste oil disposal during the reporting period please refer to Table 2.4. A mix of passive and active oily water separator systems for the separation of hydrocarbons from oily water runoff, are located across the site including: the rail load out, Licensed waste contractors remove collected waste oil from the separators on a regular basis. Routine inspections are carried out on all systems to ensure that there are no blockages or overflows. Records of all waste disposals are kept on site. 2.7 ROM and Product Coal Stockpiles A 70,000 tonne ROM coal stockpile for underground coal is located near the Underground portal level, just east of the Underground entrance. Underground coal is conveyed to the Underground ROM stockpile from the portal entrance by Conveyor CV01. Coal is transported from the Open Cut and Underground ROM Stockpile via truck and either tipped directly into the 400 tonne ROM hopper or stockpiled adjacent to the ROM bin. The ROM stockpile area is approximately 200m x 200m with a ROM coal storage capacity of approximately 250,000 tonnes. The capacity of WCPL clean coal stockpile is approximately 500,000 tonnes. 2.8 Water Management The water management system at WCPL comprises clean water (imported water from the Hunter River or Wollombi Brook), mine water (collected run-off from disturbed catchments or recycled water from the CHPP) and fresh water (either imported from the town supply or collected rainwater). The water management system is illustrated in Figures 2.4 and 2.5 and major storages are presented in Table 2.3. A network of storages and drains has been established to capture runoff from mine water catchment areas. Runoff from areas disturbed by mining (including the CHPP and associated industrial areas) is collected in Open Cut voids and other mine water storages. These storages are used as priority water sources for the CHPP and dust suppression. Runoff from haul roads is treated in sediment dams or diverted to mine water storages. CHPP tailings are discharged to the Hunter Pit tailings dam. Water that is liberated from the settled tailings filters through spoil at the southern end of the dam and reports to the North Homestead Pit. Water is reticulated from this pit back to the CHPP.
