Highlights from 2002 Conference:
The Global Plastic Environmental
Conference (GPEC) sponsored by SPE’s
Plastics Environmental Division held its 10 th
conference in Detroit, Michigan on
February 13 & 14. It was a tremendous
success. Larry Koester, the GPEC 2002
Chairperson, said, “GPEC far exceeded the
committee’s expectations, and was the best
Division conference in over five years.”
Terry Browitt, SPE President, said, “this
conference indicates that we may have
turned the corner of these troubled times.”
There were 278 registrants, and 55
papers presented, including papers from
Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy,
Puerto Rico, Switzerland and United
Kingdom. There were several registrants
from Europe, and we had a good
representation of Student Posters.
The exciting schedule for GPEC 2003 will included…
The conference will open with words from conference chair Dennis Denton of Denton Plastics. There will be four
plenary speakers (breakfast and lunch on two days). Confirmed plenary speakers for the two-day conference are Michael
Cappelletti, Executive Director of SPE, and Jerry Powell from Resource Recycling Magazine. The SPE Environmental
Division Annual Meeting will be held at lunch on Wednesday, February 26 th .
The conference will end with a Super Session Panel Discussion moderated by Michael D. Powers, Executive
Director of General Motors Account, Dow Automotive. The topic for the panel discussion will be the "State of
Environmental Stewardship in Plastics". With 5-6 individuals, the panelists currently include Jean-Luc Lavergne
(President of Lavergne Group, a Montreal, Quebec based recycler), Dr. Claudius Feger (International SPE President, and
employee of IBM Corporation), current chair of the APC, and as an SPI representative.
GPEC 2003 Chairman: Dennis Denton, Denton Plastics Inc.
Dennis Denton, CEO/President of Denton Plastics – a plastics recycling and compounding company in Portland,
Oregon, has been a member of SPE on a state and local level since 1983. He has served on numerous councils,
committees, and taskforces in Portland, King County, and Washington State. Dennis also has been on the SPE
Environmental Division (40) and its Board of Directors for several years acting as treasurer, secretary, Chair Elect,
Chairman, and for this upcoming GPEC conference, Chairman. Dennis is also an avid golfer managing to squeeze
a few holes in between his work and family.

Continuing Success. The Global Plastics Environmental Conference (GPEC) enters its ninth year servicing the
plastics, environmental, and business communities. GPEC 2003’s theme is “Environmental Stewardship of
Plastics and Energy” and continues its past successes with accomplishments of tomorrow.
Technical Papers
The major focus of GPEC lies in its technical papers, which gather engineers, scientists, and business leaders
into intellectual forums. Technical Chair Michelle Mikulec supervises and scrutinizes every entry resulting in the
highest professionalism. Recent topics have included:

Student Poster Session & Connections Reception
will be held on Wednesday, February 26th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Connection Reception at GPEC brings a diverse group of individuals and groups from all aspects of the
industry to further the achievements, marketability, and success of all.
The Student Poster Session will showcase the Environmental Division’s drive for education. The Session will
again be coordinated by Dr. Klementina Khait of Northwestern University (847-491-2742, fax 847-467-5723, or

Feature Exhibitor: At the Connection Reception, GPEC was fortunate to have the first
public display of DaimlerChrysler’s CARE Car II, which consisted of two Jeep Grand
Cherokees and 9 display stations including “End of Life Vehicle” analysis, evaluation of
plastics recovery from automobile shredder residue (ASR), and a demonstration on the use of
recycled plastics in automobiles. This exhibit and several others provided useful information
as well as covering a broad array of products.
Plastics Environmental Stewardship Awards
At the Awards Luncheon, Dr. Subu Subramanian presented “Excellence in Plastics Impact
on the Environment” awards to four companies in recognition of their demonstrated
environmental leadership and excellence, accomplished through a significant and noteworthy
achievement activity or process during 2000/2001. The categories included Environmental
Stewardship in the areas of Technology and Processes, and Environmental Stewardship in
Products. The following four companies were selected from 35 outstanding nominations:
• Sony Electronics demonstrated their environmental concerns by using postconsumer
recycled plastics in the manufacture of TV sets.
• KTM Industries emerged as a small company with a focus on the development and
manufacture of environmentally friendly, bio-based plastics for both industrial and
consumer uses.
• Coca-Cola North America actively utilized recycled material in their PET soft drink
bottles as well as significant resource-reduction by weight reduction of their bottles.
• General Motors instituted a philosophy of “Stewardship of the Environment” in the
design and development of new products and processes.
